Saab Key Programming
Saab cars built since about 1994 feature an immobilizer mechanism that is based on codes for keys. In order to add a second key, it requires the purchase of a new transponder as well as special programming. This is usually done at the dealer using a special Tech2 diagnostic tool.
The problem is that this can be very costly. It is always advisable to keep an extra set of keys available.
Transponder key
The transponder key comes with an electronic chip that sends a signal back to the car when it is placed in the ignition. The car will check to see if the signal matches the one on the key. If the signals are in sync, the car will open and start. This is a great way to protect your vehicle from theft.
Transponder keys are a favored feature in automobiles, however you should be aware that they are not as secure as traditional keys made of metal. The metal portion of a traditional key is easily cut or copied, while transponders are protected by an electronic chip that protects it. This chip has a unique code that is programmed into the car's computers to identify it.
When a Saab key fob is used the car recognizes it and allows it to turn on. However, it is only able to do this if the fob has a non-modified chip that has been programmed to match. Otherwise, the car will reject the key and won't start.
It is crucial to have an extra Saab key. This is especially important when you live in a rural location where there are a lot of car thieves. The good news is that it's possible to find a new key for your Saab without needing to visit an auto dealership and pay the high prices that they ask. In the majority of instances, you can get a new key created on-the-spot for less than half the cost of what you would pay at an auto dealer.
Wired key
Saab cars typically come with two keys upon purchase. If you have only one, it is an ideal idea to purchase an extra key fob as quickly as you can since if you lose it, your car will require the replacement of a CIM unit and the locking cylinders will have to be replaced. This could be expensive, especially if you are buying a second-hand car.
The next step is to connect the wires of the column and row to the microcontroller. This is the toughest aspect of the project and will require a lot of soldering. There's no standard way to accomplish this, however it's important to plan out the way you'll route and solder the rows and columns. There are 22 microcontroller wires as well as pins to connect for this keyboard. It includes 5 rows and 17 column.
After the columns and rows are soldered together then it's time to connect the key switches. To do this you must place a diode on each key switch pin and then solder it. This will shield the pins from current, thus preventing them from being shorted. A diode permits current to only flow in only one direction. It comes with a visual indicator of a black line that indicates which direction current will flow.
Some of the tools available at auto parts stores- such as the Autel MaxiIM IM608 Pro and IM508 -- can aid shop customers or DIY users in some cases replace keys in the program and restore lost immobilizer information, Sanabria says. The tools plug into OBD ports and guide the customer through each step and make the process more straightforward than replacing the car's computer.
Jump starting the battery
Most people keep a few sets of jumper cables in their trunks for emergency situations, but jumping a battery on newer vehicles might not be the most efficient option. These vehicles are equipped with a number of computers and digital devices that communicate with one another. A surge in voltage when the battery is connected to another one could cause damage to the parts, rendering your car undriveable.
Connect the cables to the vehicle working. Allow it to run for two minutes. Attach the red clip on the positive terminal of the good battery. (It will say "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface under the disabled car's hood--the engine block is an excellent choice. Do not connect the black cable to the negative terminal on the dead battery, as this could trigger an ignition that ignites the gasoline in the engine bay.
After the cables have been connected, begin the car and let it run for about five minutes. Then disconnect the cables in reverse. Be aware that the battery of the Saab 9-3 gets recharged when you drive, and it can take a while for the battery to come back to normal. You should purchase another key fob as soon as possible. Replacing the only one that works requires the installation and programming of a new computer chip.
Replacement Case
Saab owners typically only have one car key, and if that is lost, they'll be charged. The reason is that it's not cheap to replace a key, and it involves replacing the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE on older models, and programming. It is recommended to have a second key in the event of theft or other disaster the best solution is to purchase an extra key as soon as you can. Even even if the key is "new", it will not work.
Most locksmiths cannot help you in the event that you only have one working key, and the dealer will charge top dollar to replace the computer in your vehicle to make a replacement. However, we can reset and re-program the computer's EEPROM to accept an alternative key without replacing the entire system. saab 93 key fob replacement thekeylab.co.uk could save you lots of money. It's cheaper to do this than wait until you lose the only key.
