Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are a crucial part of your uPVC windows and should be matched to the existing frame. The spindle size is what determines if the new uPVC handles will fit.
Take a look at the table below for a quick guideline to take note of your uPVC window handle's spindle length. This will ensure you order the appropriate replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are most commonly found on upvc (but they're also used in timber and aluminium). They have a square spindle which extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism that is attached to the window. The handle is used to operate the locking system around the window.
Window handles from Espag come in a number of options that differ in style based on the design you pick and the function you'd like to achieve from them. Some have a push-button for a 'locked closed' position, as well as key-locking (and fire-escape non-locking where required). Many reach the Secure by Design specification to provide an extra level of security. They also come with a variety of different spindle lengths which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has tested the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure that they meet all the standards you would expect. They are suitable for windows made of upvc, timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We offer a range of colors, and can match the handle with the hinges you have already.
Another important feature of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the end of the handle to where it sits on the frame, and it is essential to make sure it's right to ensure a secure and tight fit. The majority of our handles are 43mm apart between the screw hole centres, which is industry standard.
You can pick between straight or cranked handles. Cranked handles are ideal for situations where the espagnolette handle is going to be situated close to the edge of the frame because they provide more space to open the window.
Our upvc replacement handle range includes a variety of finishes, styles and colours to suit your decor, including polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our handles have a soft-close feature to reduce the sound of windows closing.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle designed specifically for the fabricator who wants to offer their customers a fashionable and high quality design. These handles can be used with either uPVC or aluminium windows and are operated by an edge that locks over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle can be locked so that it only opens when pushed, offering extra security. The handle is available in 5 different finishes with both left hand and right hand versions, allowing the manufacturer to accommodate a greater range of windows.
The window handle of the cockspur comes with three packing pieces that are of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a variety of sizes for backsets. Each packer fits neatly beneath the handle's nose and can be removed or inserted into the size of the step in order to create a different backset, ranging from 9mm to 21mm. The handle is available in left and right handed versions and either a straight or curly nose design.
It is crucial to determine your current handle height before purchasing a new handle in order to ensure it will fit correctly. A wrong handle can lead to a variety of issues, such as the inability for the window to be shut. This can be a hassle for homeowners and cause unnecessary stress.
A cockspur handle is found on older uPVC or timber windows. These kinds of handles don't have any type of window lock, as opposed to an Espag handle that is used on modern windows that will incorporate shootbolts as well as an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The espagnolette (often abbreviated to 'espag') handle is the most common type of handle used on the new uPVC casement windows. When you turn the handle of the espagnolette it opens an Encloser locking mechanism from Yale that is much more secure than a traditional British standard handle or cockspur. This is because when you turn the handle of the espagnolette it turns several locks inside the window frame to secure it.
Handle with Tilt and Turn
These windows are popular among people who want to increase the airflow in their homes while also adding a level of security. As the name suggests they have an option to tilt and turn that allows the window to tilt open at 90 degrees, providing an opening of a smaller size or to drop into a hopper-style design to provide full airflow. This dual functionality is also a distinct appearance that can create an impressive look to your double glazed window.
Tilt and turn windows are more complex compared to other types of double-glazed windows, which adds to their price because they require more components and additional labour during installation. They are worth the investment because they can increase the value of your home and bring numerous advantages to your home.
A major benefit is that they allow you to clean your windows from the inside without the need for ladders that are outside. This is ideal for people who live high up in buildings or flats, as it doesn't require you to take a risk of falling from an elevated position. Tilt-and-turn windows provide extra security, since they lock when in a tilted state. This means that burglars aren't able to open them from inside.
These handles are typically found on European style windows in Germany and other European countries However, they can be installed in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is usually made of a spindle and has a 7mm square spindle which is commonly available in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The handle's base also tends to be wider than most handles which is why they are known as a tilt-safe window handle since it can only be rotated to open the window once it has been locked into either the closed or tilt position.
To replace a uPVC window handle that turns and turns, first remove the old handle using the screwdriver. The screws are usually hidden behind a sprung loaded backplate. Simply lift this and twist to reveal the two screw holes. Using the ruler or tape measure you can then measure the distance between these two screws that is typically 43mm centre to centre. Once you've determined the measurement you can then select the appropriate size handle to match your uPVC windows.
Aluminium Handle
Diecast aluminium is finished in a stylish matt black colour.
Typically, made from corrosion-resistant and weatherproof alloys, the handle of aluminum is sturdy enough to meet the requirements of the construction industry. It is easily shaped by industrial metal processing, such as extrusion and forging which gives it the flexibility and nearly unlimited design potential.
Additionally, aluminium is extremely sturdy and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. It is able to endure even the harshest of conditions. It is also resistant to ultraviolet radiation and can be employed indoors. It is also highly versatile and can be colored to match any style of aesthetic. From traditional emulated hardware metals, to vibrant applications that use hundreds of pure colors, the possibilities are endless.
Aluminum isn't rusty and does not require any maintenance. It is protected by an oxide layer naturally present. The protective layer can also be enhanced by a variety methods, including powder coating or anodizing to offer additional resistance to corrosion. It can last for a long time without requiring any routine care or cleaning. Furthermore, it is an environmentally friendly material that is 100 percent recyclable. upvc door handle makes it a great option for commercial, residential industrial, and residential buildings. It also provides high thermal efficiency and is safe from fire.
