The Myths And Facts Behind Window Handles
Window Handles

Window handles are available in a variety of colours and styles to suit your home. They open and close double-glazed windows using a hidden locking mechanism.

When replacing your handle it is crucial to examine the length of the spindle. This is how far the nose sticks out of the base plate, or how much further in it goes into the lock.

Espag Handles

Espag handles operate multi-point locks on double glazed windows which allows the handle to rotate a series of locks around the window to increase security. Our selection of espagnolette handle includes both straight and cranked styles, in a variety of finishes including chrome, brass and black.

Each handle is made from sturdy die cast zinc that is powder coated or plated for high corrosion resistance, impact resistance and protection against wear. They are designed for use on uPVC and aluminium windows equipped with espagnolette or shoot bolt mechanisms and can be locked in the closed position with a key or push button to lock in place.

Typically, espagnolette handles have seven millimeter squared spindles that is inserted into the lever backplate to fit into a lock mechanism inside the frame of the sash, and turning the handle will activate the lock. When choosing an espagnolette handle for the first time, it is important to take the length of the spindle into consideration as it will determine how the window can be opened. The spindle's size will be indicated on the handle backplate with numbers like 5 3/4', '5', or '2/3' and this is what you need to test against the handle you have currently to make sure it fits.

Cranked handles are a more elegant design for straight handles. They can be ordered in left-handed versions (opened clockwise) and right-handed versions (opened anticlockwise) according to the method you use to open your window. Cranked handles give you more space to open the window. This is ideal for windows close to the frame.

The cockspur handle is another variant of the espagnolette design, but this one with a cockspur nose that closes on a striker plate in a manner similar as an espagnolette multi-point lock. This type of handle is ideal for older UPVC and aluminium windows and can be used as repair handles to replace old broken handles for cockspurs.

Crankspur and cranked handle models can be supplied with a key-lock insert in order to provide additional security, these are available in a variety of hand options and come with the option of a black blanking plug those who prefer their window handle to be unlocked or prefer to use the handle as fire escape only.

Cockspur Handles

The cockspur is a traditional window handle with an elongated spur, or a triangle bit, that pushes against the frame's wedge as the handle is closed. They are usually found on older aluminium or uPVC windows that lack an internal mechanism to secure the frame. The cockspur handles help to hold them together.

The handles are available in a large selection of nose and nib height options to suit many different profiles. They're also suited for both left and right hand window systems. They're the ideal solution for those who want to replace a handle that's worn or faulty, but don't require more complex internal gadgets.

Our Sparta Cockspur window handle is made from top-quality materials and is a favorite choice for a wide range of applications. It has a sleek ergonomic design and comes with a standard deadlock lockable for added security. It is available in various backset heights that are compatible with all common casement size and can be used with a complete suite of matching window accessory.

In-line cockspur handle models are straight and turn either left or right, while cranked cockspur handles feature an 'ear which is positioned over a striker plate made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. It is easy to use and is lockable or unlocked by using the use of a key.

Espagnolette handles are thought to be more secure than cockspur models as they use spinning spindles that operate multiple locks hidden in the frame. These handles are a great solution for those who require an extra secure handle for double-glazing. They are available in a variety of designs to suit your home's style.

It is important to measure your windows prior to purchasing new frames. This will ensure that the spindle and handle are the correct dimensions for your new frames. Select a product that meets the Secured By Design minimum requirements.

Tilt and Turn Handles

Tilt and turn windows are becoming more and more popular due to their functionality, efficiency and the benefits they provide. They allow for multiple opening options and can be opened in different ways which helps with cleaning and allows fresh air into the home or providing a fire escape.

These handles are like espagnolette handles but they have additional functions that make them better suited to turn and tilt windows. The lever can be set down when locked to close the windows, 90 degrees to tilt it open like windows, or up to normally open the window.

They feature a multipoint lock mechanism that is more effective than a double-glazed casement windows to prevent forced entry. When the handle is closed, the bottom hinge has locking pins that are embedded by a rail made of metal that runs through the frame. The window inside is secured by two more hinges in the bottom corners that can be opened upwards this makes them ideal for windows that are larger and is great for ventilation.

The open mode can be activated by turning the handle in such a way that it is facing up. It opens the window at a vertical tilt that allows for better airflow and makes cleaning easier. This is because the sash can be pulled inwards from either side of the window to create a gap sufficient for the ladder or stool to pass through.

Tilt and turn handles are typically larger than espag or cockspur handles due to the fact that they have to be able handle the heavier and larger frame sizes they are found in. They are typically spindle-based and use the same type of fixings that are used in a standard cockspur or espag handle, but they have larger bases and typically larger screw centres.

uPVC frames which are more affordable than aluminium or timber and don't require painting are the most well-known for these windows. However there are a variety of wood-effect finishes that are available. Aluminium is a different alternative for these types of windows since it can be painted in any shade to match the style of your house and is lighter than uPVC.

Spade or Blade Handles

If you're upgrading your uPVC windows or replacing those that were included with the property, it is crucial to choose handles that complement the style and functionality of the window. The locking and closing mechanisms of your uPVC window are equally important as the frame. This lets you use them effectively and without hassle. It is also important to ensure that the handles are of a high quality and will last well, rather than breaking easily or being prone to damage.

One of the most well-known kinds of handles is a blade or spade handle. They are usually used on tilt and turn or casement-style uPVC windows. They function by utilizing a lever that operates a latch and catch or multi-point lock mechanism. The catch is usually attached to a peg stopper or mortice keep that is placed within the frame of your window, which provides an additional level of security and stability.

These handles are most likely to be utilized on modern uPVC double-glazed casement or tilt and turn windows. They are designed for better ergonomics and provide more leverage to open the windows, making them more convenient. They come in various designs to match any style of interior.

The handle itself will feature a spindle (7mm square) that extends out from the back of it that is used to interact with the gearbox and get inside of the multi-point locking system inside the window. The window can be shut and secured more securely. The handles are also available in a range of sizes that can be fitted to different sized frames and some manufacturers offer straight and angled versions too.

You can also increase the security of your uPVC windows by choosing handles with a key-locking mechanism. They are ideal for uPVC windows and doors that are often used. door handles let you lock the window or door from the outside. This makes it difficult for burglars to open the handle or open the door open.

There are arguments for and against a lock handle. We think it's beneficial because it can add an extra layer of security to your home. Even if you are not concerned about burglars trying to enter your property, the fact that they will be more difficult to get through the key-locking handle is likely to discourage them and make it less of a target.
