Door Handle Replacement
It's worth it to replace door handles if you don't like the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. Installing a new door handle is simple if you've got patience.
Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws to create a stylish appearance. If the new handle doesn't have screws already connected, you'll need to attach them separately.
Remove the handle that was previously used
The door handle is not only a decoration for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock the door. However, as time passes your door handle can lose its grip, feel loose, or appear old and worn. This is an indication that it's time for a replacement.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a serious problem since you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door which could put you and your family at risk.
It's also recommended to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A broken door handle is risky, particularly for elderly or children members who struggle to open it. They could be trapped. It's simple to replace a broken handle on doors.
Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure whether your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will enable you to purchase the right size door handle.
It is the easiest method to take off the old door handle by taking it off from the door. Usually, a screwdriver is used. However certain door handles come with a cover plate that conceals the mounting screws so you'll have to cut off this to access the screws beneath. Once you have removed the old handle, make a note of how the spindle is connected to ensure that you can align it when you fit the new one.
Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by uncrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can make use of a screwdriver to take off the door handle. However, you'll have to locate the small latch that is located on the edge trim piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then, you can remove the latch from the door's edge.
Take off the Strike Plate
When you replace your handle, you'll be required to replace the latch plate, which is the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The packaging that the new handles are packaged with will offer two latch plates - either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above for the components of a door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with a round one. This will let the latch hook into the strike plate and make the handle easier to use.
The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the latch plate that was previously in place. The screws are usually quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It is helpful to get a second person to assist in this area if it is possible.
The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that came with your new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could cause damage to the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, close and open the door to see whether it latches and closes correctly. If not then you'll have to adjust the strike plate up or down, or move it forward or back, until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door is jiggling or moving, you may need to increase the size of the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or because of damage or a broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but with a metal file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Eliminating the Latch
The latch is the angled piece of metal that is able to move between the hole on the inside edge of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door wiggles when you close it, changing the latch might be the only thing needed to fix it.
It's difficult to identify the screws that attach the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver in order to pry it off. After you've removed the trim plate, it should be simple to remove the latch and the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in the position.
If the latch won't come out, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel that the latch and handle begin to break off. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.
After the old latch has been removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot without any issues. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.
Before installing the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is in line with the measurement of your existing handle.
If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you're not switching locks, a new lock should fit inside the recess you have already installed, and also work with your existing keys. Be sure to select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.
Remove the cover plate
Door handles can start to look worn over time If you replace them with a modern lever on rose design it's a simple and quick DIY project to decorate and will improve the overall look of your home. You can purchase complete sets that include privacy adaptors, escutcheons, and escutcheons.

Remove the screw that is holding the handle inside and set it aside once the cover plate has been removed. Remove the screws that hold both the inner and outer plates. You can loosen them using a Philips Screwdriver. Then, you can remove the outer plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.
Most doors have an opening between the door jamb and the inner edge of the frame that allows for a handle, but not all have. If window handles isn't have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole through the door. It's the same procedure as opening a locked door, but you will have to be extra cautious not to scratch the frame or door.
Installing new screws for the door knob is necessary after holes have been made. Make sure to buy the same size as the old ones, so you do not end up with an handle that is either too tight or loose. You'll also need to install an additional strike rod and latch plate that aren't part of most door handle sets.
