8 Tips For Boosting Your Door Handle Replacement Game
Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. Installing a new door handle is simple if you've got patience.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that hide the screws, giving them an attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if the new handle does not have them attached already.

Removal of the Old Handle

The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home, but it's also an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock the door. However, as time passes the door handle could lose its grip, feel loose, or appear old and worn. This is a sign that it's time to replace your door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle is in need of replacing is the fact that it is becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem since it means that you are unable to no longer lock or unlock your door, which could pose a security risk for you and your family.

Another reason to replace your door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is risky, particularly for elderly or children members who may struggle to open it. They could become trapped. It's easy to replace a damaged handle on doors.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and should be able to fit any door. If you're not sure whether the new door handle you're buying will fit, try taking out the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will let you purchase the correct size door handle.

It is the easiest way to remove the old door handle by taking it off from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. However certain door handles come with an outer cover plate that hides the screws that mount them, so you'll need to pry off this to reach the screws beneath. After you've removed the old handle, make an outline of how the spindle is connected so that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in the new one.

Alternatively, you can remove your door handle by unscrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can make use of a screwdriver to take off the door handle. However, you will have to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge cut piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Removing the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. This is the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The packaging that the new handles arrive with will offer two different latch plates: one that is rectangular and the other a circular one (see the diagram above for the parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook into the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.

The first step is to unhook the screw that is holding the old latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a bit of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be helpful to have another person assist with this part.

The latch plate should easily be removed from the door after the screws have been removed. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Using the wood screws that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, try closing and opening the door to determine whether it locks and closes correctly. If not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, forward or back until the door closes properly.

If the door is jiggling or moving, it may be necessary to expand the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't small, a wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that slides between the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into the door frame so that the door stays closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, replacing the latch could be all that is needed to fix the problem.

It's difficult to identify the screws that attach the latch to the door, but there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver and pry it off. After you've removed your trim plate, it will be easy to remove the latch and the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If window handles doesn't easily release you can try using the clip of a paper or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the latch's slot that is recessed and gently turn or jiggle it until you feel the latch and handle begin to split. You may have to repeat this process several times before you are able to take the latch off.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without any issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you'll need a new one. If you're not switching locks the new lock will fit into your existing recess, and also work with your existing keys. Pick a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match the handles you have.

Remove the cover plate

Door handles can start to look shabby with time, but if you replace them with a modern lever on rose design it's a simple and quick DIY and decorating project that will enhance the overall appearance of your home. You can purchase complete sets that come with matching escutcheons and privacy adaptor kits.

To replace the door handle inside take off the cover plate (or rose) that protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Find a release tab on the plate, and make use of a flathead screwdriver to pop it off the knob. It may have an opening along one side or be held in place by pins.

Remove the screw that holds the interior handle and place it aside when the cover plate has been removed. You'll also need to remove the screws that hold the latch and plates to the door, which you can accomplish by loosening them using the help of a Philips screwdriver. Then, remove the inner plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.

Most doors have a gap between the jamb of the door and the edge of the frame that allows for a handle, but not all do. If yours does not have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole into the door to install the new handle. The procedure for this is similar to the procedure opening a door using the lock, however you'll be taking extra care to avoid damaging the door or frame.

After the holes are drilled after which you'll have to put in new screws for the door knob. Choose the same size as your old screws to prevent getting the handle too tight or loose. It's also necessary to install a new strike rod and latch plate, which aren't included with the majority of door handle sets.
