The Replacement Door Handles Success Story You'll Never Remember
How to Replace Door Handles

Door handles are an essential part of your home's decor. A new handle can transform your home and bring your decor to the present.

Over time the knobs on your door could become stiff or even break. upvc door handle are indicators that it's time to replace the knobs. This guide will help choose the best door handle replacement for your home.

Door Knobs

The handles on your doors can enhance the look of your home and allow you to open and close them. They are available in a range of finishes, colors, and types to complement your decor. If yours is beginning to show signs of wear or you just want to upgrade replacing them is simple and can be done in a few steps.

The first thing to find is the spindle or shaft through the knob's attachment to the door. Some have a tiny hole that you can put a narrow screwdriver into to remove the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a tiny slot or hole through which allows you to press the spring-activated detent pin using flathead. When you press the pin and the latch mechanism opens, it releases and lets you pull or push on the knob.

After you have gained access to the shaft or spindle take the knob off of the door and replace it with the new one. Align it correctly and check that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.

After replacing the knob, you can place the latch rod over the hole on the door. Secure it by securing it to the rod system on the second knob. Make sure that the holes are aligned and then thread in the screws on the latch plate and tighten the screws.

Some people opt for the smooth or brushed finish on their door hardware for modern, sleek design that matches other furnishings in their homes. Others prefer a more rustic style, which pairs well with rustic-styled rooms. If you have someone in your family who has mobility issues, you may want to choose the lever or rim lock that requires less pressure to operate.

While aesthetics have traditionally been the main consideration when it comes to door handle design, other aspects are becoming more important too. Infection control and accessibility are key issues that have led to the development of new designs for handle handles including ones that can be operated with the forearm of a person.

Latch

The latch that holds the handle of your door open can wear down over time. The replacement of the latch to accommodate the new handle is an easy DIY project and it will make a huge change in the way your door opens and closes.

Depending on the kind of knob you are using depending on the type of handle you have, the latch may be a part of the knob itself, or it could be an individual piece that is attached to the door itself. In any case, you'll follow the same procedure to remove and replace. Removing the old latch of place is fairly easy especially if the door handle is equipped with what's known as a "magic button". The button is located on the left side of the knob, this little pressure-slot is what you have to press to pop the latch out of the handle and off of the latching mechanism.

If your handle doesn't have this button, you will need to remove the cover plates placed over the latch plate. These are usually circular or rectangular and can be removed using a screwdriver. Some have a slot in which you can place your screwdriver, whereas others just snap off.

Next, you will want to remove the two machine screws holding the latch and inner plate to the door handle. You will need to store these shorter screws with an angled tip in a safe location to be able to reuse them later. Once the screws are removed, you can remove the latch plate as well as the mechanism from the hole, and then set it aside.

Then you can begin to install the new latch. Install the inside plate of the latch into the hole in the door and secure it with the provided hardware. Make sure that the square pin on interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the handle and is aligned with the other holes for screws in the handle. Then fix the exterior latch plate using the screws provided.

Strike Plate

One of the most common reasons for replacing the door handle is that it is loose or doesn't lock properly. This is typically caused by misaligned parts in the latching mechanism, such as a striking plate that's either too short or has moved upwards or downward on the doorjamb with time. This project allows you replace your old strikeplate with an extended one, which will offer better security for your door and will keep it closed.

Apply a lipstick or other marking material on the bolt that you are using to check if it is the strike plate. Close the door and try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate's hole, it means that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is above the strike plate hole, it's likely that the strike plate has been moved up or down on the doorjamb.

Depending on the door you have You may be able to attach the new strike plate in the existing one, using the screws that come with it. You may have to drill holes first and then chisel the wood to ensure a tight fit. If this is the situation Be careful not to chisel out too much wood or you could damage the strength of the doorjamb.

Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a stronger grip on doors and require more force to open them. It usually requires two larger screws to anchor the strike plate into the door frame. To accomplish this, you'll need to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel away the wood to make space for the new one.

This rare strike plate is made of solid brass and comes with a thick, heavy-duty. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. It comes with both machine screws and wood screws, ensuring that you have the right equipment for your task. Remember that wood screws have a pointed tip whereas machine screws are blunter.
