Door Handle Replacement
Door handles appear to be an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the way they look or are finding them difficult to use, it's worth replacing them. Installing the new handle on your door is simple if you have patience.
Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if your new handle does not already have them.
Removal of the old Handle
Door handles aren't just an an important aesthetic addition to your home, but they're crucial for safety as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle could start to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It may also appear worn out and old. This is a sign that it's probably the time to replace your door handle.
One of the first indications that your door handle is in need of replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means you can no longer lock or unlock your door, which could pose a security risk for you and your family.
It is also an excellent idea to replace your door handle when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, especially for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They may get trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure if the new door handle you're buying will work, try removing the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will help you buy the correct sized door handle.
It is easiest to remove the door handle by unscrewing it from the door. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. However certain door handles come with the cover plate which hides the mounting screws, so you'll need to pry off this cover plate to get access to the screws underneath. After you've removed the old handle, take a note of how the spindle is attached to ensure you are able to align it when you fit the new one.
You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you will have to locate the small latch that is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the edge of the door.
The Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the part that holds the hole through which the latch of the door hooks when the door closes. The new handles will have two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of a door handle). If your current latch plate is rectangular, swap it to a round one, so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a way that makes the handle easier to use.
window handles is to unhook the screw that holds the old latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a bit of force to loosen them. It may be helpful to have a second person help with this part if possible.
After the screws have been removed, the latch plate should pull out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate up.
Now, you can proceed to making the new door strike plate for installation. With the screws made of wood that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws because this could damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, close and open the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If it does not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down or forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door is moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or the wrong size for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Take off the Latch
The latch is the metal piece that is angled that slides in and out of the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also catches the door frame so that the door stays closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, an upgrade to the latch could be all that is needed to correct the issue.
It's hard to see the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver and remove it. After removing the trim plate, you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.
If the latch isn't able to be released it is suggested to use an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the latch and handle begin to split. It may take this several times before the latch comes loose enough to let it out.
After the old latch has been removed it should be possible to slide the new latch into the slot without issues. Use the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.
Before you install the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.
You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the handle and latch or if your current one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new latch should fit in your existing recess, and work with the keys you have currently. Be sure to choose a latch with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.
Removal of the Cover Plate
You can replace your old door handles with a contemporary lever and rose design to improve the look of your house. You can buy complete sets of door handles that come with matching escutcheons and privacy adaptor kits.
The first step in replacing the door handle inside is to remove the cover plate or rose, which conceals the screws and inner mechanism. Utilize a flathead to take off the cover plate. It may have a slot along one edge or be held in place by a pin.
After the cover plate is off take the screw that holds the interior handle in place and set it aside. You'll also want to take out the screws that hold the latch and plates to the door, which you can accomplish by loosening them using the help of a Philips screwdriver. Remove the plates that hold the inner plate and latch from the door. Set them aside.
Most doors have an opening between the door jamb and the inner edge of the frame that allows for a handle, but not all do. If yours doesn't then you'll have to drill a hole into the door to install the new handle. The process for doing this is the same procedure for opening a door with the lock, however you'll need to take extra care to avoid damaging the frame or door.
After the holes are drilled, you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Make sure you purchase the same size as the previous ones, so that you won't have the handle that is too tight or loose. You'll also need to install an additional latch plate and strike rod, which aren't included with the majority of door handle sets.
