French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Melding form with functionality, French-door refrigerators have stylish double doors that open to an expansive fridge on the top and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features such as through-the-door dispensers, ice machines with higher-end features, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They considered storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like the name suggests, the GE Profile series targets those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in their kitchen. This fridge has them all, from the Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator is more, I'd expect better.

Apart from that minor flaw however, this refrigerator is a great option. It has a large freezer compartment, which is unusual for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds plenty of frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. french style fridge freezers Frydge is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It has a decent sized icemaker in the left door. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelving in both compartments to create customized storage arrangement for whatever you have to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. Its LED lighting is a nice feature, and the in-door storage bins have a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to allow you to store items that are tall. The drawers come with temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with all the features you would expect from a refrigerator within this price range. It has Wi-Fi, app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and allows you to manage your refrigerator from anywhere across the globe. It also offers a lot of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is unlocked as well as when the fridge or freezer requires defrosting, and when the filter requires a change.

It is nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS offered Precise fill, an option available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allows users to select how many cups they want to disperse. It does offer a countdown on the fridge display to display how much water have left, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a stunning piece of equipment. It's designed to look like a seamless piece in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and two compressors to preserve food. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces pyramid shaped ice using minimal water. This refrigerator is the ideal option for a single family or kitchenettes looking for an integrated look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated by more than a fraction, this is crucial to avoid freezing burn. The refrigerator section of the refrigerator also performed well. It reached the initial temperature set within an hour, and remained at the temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app lets you monitor and control your fridge remotely from your tablet or smartphone. The fridge is expensive, but it comes with great features and capabilities for the cost.

While the fridge is an incredible appliance but it's important to be aware of the limitations. You may need to get inventive with tall items since the fridge is limited in shelf space. The shelves are also not resistant to spills and are easily stained or damaged by sharp items. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need plenty of space in an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge has a standard French-door layout with gallon-sized door bins at each door, two rows of shelves for spill-capture and a set of sleeker drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give taller items more headroom. You'll also find a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it easy to move the frozen ice whenever you need it. The freezer also has clever design features, like sliding drawers that allow you to organize your items. It also has a large container to store frozen food items, and a separate container for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another cool feature of the refrigerator. It allows you to control the temperature of your fridge and lighting using your smartphone. It's a nice way to control and monitor your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't enhance the efficiency of the fridge. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we test. This could be due to the larger capacity.

The other issue we have with the doors of this refrigerator. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows shorter people to easily open them from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to steer closed without slamming the doors. It would have been better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent choice for those looking to combine the look and feel of a French-door refrigerator with an efficient design. Its capacity is higher than average for counter-depth models and also cools evenly. It's also a little less than the top counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it an attractive choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It has a simple design that's not as visually striking as some of the competition, but it has enough features that make it a great choice. Its most important feature is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods such as meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a large ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located over the two crisper bins, is a great feature. This drawer lets you redirect a portion of the fridge's cooling power to this area, so it can be used to store food items which need extra attention. This feature is adjustable using an outside slider that is located inside the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling level for the whole fridge, however, I've found that changing the generic settings tends to be more effective than specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator were fairly constant across the different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ significantly from 38 degrees. That's a good performance however it doesn't be among the top in our rankings.


This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to a smart thermometer to get more precise measurements of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is constructed of stainless steel with a grey body that has a "smudge-proof" finish. It is capable of repelling fingerprints and streaks even when compared to the glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
