Do Not Forget Replacement Door Handles: 10 Reasons That You No Longer Need It
How to Replace Door Handles

The door handles of your home are an essential part of the interior design. A new handle can bring your decor and space up to date.

Over time the knobs on your door could become stiff or even break. These are signs it's time to replace the knobs. This guide will help you select the best door handle replacement for your home.

Door Knobs

Door handles can enhance the aesthetics of your home while also making it easier for people to open and close doors. They are available in a wide variety of finishes, colors, and styles that will complement your decor. If yours is beginning to begin to show signs of wear or simply require an upgrade, replacing them is relatively simple and can be completed in a couple of steps.

The first thing you have to find is the spindle or shaft through which the knob is attached to the door. Some knobs have a small opening that you can access with an screwdriver to take out the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a small slot or hole in which can be used with the flathead screwdriver on a spring-activated nut, known as a detent. The pin opens the latch mechanism, and lets you to pull or push the knob.

Once you have the spindle, or shaft, in your hand Remove the knob and replace it. Check that the latch functions properly before tightening the new set screws.

After replacing repairmywindowsanddoors , put the latch rod over the door's hole. Secure it by securing it to the rod system on the second knob. Make sure that the holes are in alignment, then tighten the screws on the latch plate.

Some people choose a brushed or smooth metal finish for the door hardware to give their home a modern and sleek look. This will match their other furniture. Others prefer a more rustic style which is great for farmhouse-styled spaces. If you have a member of your family with mobility issues, you may prefer a lever style or rim lock that require less pressure to operate.

Other aspects are being looked at more and more when it comes to the design of door handles. Accessibility and control of infections are key issues that have led to the creation of new designs for handle handles, such as ones which can be operated by a person's forearm.

Latch

The latch that holds the door handle open will wear down as time passes. The replacement of the latch to make room for the new handle is an easy DIY project and will make a huge difference in the way your door opens and closes.

Depending on the type of handle you are using the latch may be a separate piece or an integral part of the knob. In either scenario, the same procedure for removing and installing will apply. It's simple to take off the old latch, especially in the case of a door handle with a "magic" button. The tiny pressure-slot, which is located on the side knob, is what you will have to press to pull the latch out of the handle.

If your handle does not have this button, the first step is to remove any cover plates that sit over the latch plate. They are typically circular or rectangular and can be removed with the aid of a screwdriver. Some have a tiny slot inside that you can slide your screwdriver through, while others snap off.

Then, loosen the machine screws that secure the latch and the plate to the door handle. You'll need to keep the screws that are shorter and have an angled tip in a safe place to be able to reuse them later. After the screws have been removed, you are able to remove the latch plate and the mechanism from the hole, and then set it aside.

Now you can begin installing the new latch. Install the latch plate into the door hole and secure it with the hardware provided. Make sure that the square pin that is on the interior of the latch is pointing towards the latching mechanism inside the handle and that it is lined up with the other screw chambers of the door handle. Then fix the exterior latch plate using the screws provided.

Strike Plate

One of the most common reasons to replace the door handle is because it feels loose or doesn't lock properly. This is usually due to malfunctioning parts of the latching system, such as the strike plate being too short or has moved upwards or down on the doorjamb over time. This project lets you replace your old strikeplate with an extended one, which will offer better security for your door and will keep it shut.

Apply some lipstick or other marking material on the bolt that you are using to check if it is the strike plate. Close the door and attempt to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate hole it means that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole the strikeplate has likely been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.

Depending on your door, you may be able to just screw the new strike plate into the door over the old one using the screws that come with it. You may have to first drill holes and then chisel some wood out to ensure a tight fit. If this is the case, be careful not to cut too hard or you'll cause damage to the integrity of your doorjamb.

Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a more secure hold on the doors and require more force to open the doors. Typically it will require two longer screws to secure the strike plate to the door frame. To do this, you'll have to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel out the wood to make room for the new one.

This hard-to find strike plate is made of solid brass and has an extremely thick. It's specifically designed to be used with antique rim locks. This kit includes wood screws and machine screws so you can pick the right hardware for your needs. Be aware that the wood screws have a sharp edge, whereas the machine ones are more blunt.
