What Experts From The Field Of Door Handle Replacement Want You To Know?
Door Handle Replacement

Door handles appear to be an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. Installing a new door handle is simple if you have patience.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws to give them an attractive look. However, you'll need to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't already have them.

Take off the handle from the old one.

Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home but they're also vital for safety since they allow you to lock and unlock your door. However, over time the door handle could lose its grip, feel loose, or look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's probably the time to replace your door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle needs replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is an issue because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door, which could be a security risk for you and your family.

It is also a good idea to replace your door handle when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially if your children or elderly family members have difficulty opening it, and get trapped in the. It's a good thing that it's easy to fix a broken door handle by replacing the old one.

Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and will fit any door. If you aren't sure if your new door handle will work, remove the old one and measure its housing holes. This will allow you to purchase the right size door handle.

The most straightforward method to take off your old door handle is to remove it from the door itself. This is typically done with a screw driver. However, some door handles have a cover plate that conceals the screws that mount them, so you'll need to remove this to reach the screws underneath. Once you've removed your old handle, take a note of how the spindle is connected so that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in the new one.

Alternately, you can take off your door handle by unscrewing it from the latch mechanism. This is typically done with the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located just to the left of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, remove the handle from the strike plate and then the latch from the door edge.

Remove the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate when replacing the handle. It's the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The package the new handles are packaged in will have two latch plates: either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above detailing the components of a door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook into the strike plate and make the handle more convenient.

The first step is to take off the screw that is holding the old latch plate. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. It is helpful to have a second person help with this task if you can.

Once the screws are removed the latch will slide out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This will sometimes free the plate.

Now, you can proceed to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. Utilizing the screws made of wood that were included with your new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Don't over tighten your screws because this could damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and then open the door to determine whether it latches and closes properly. If not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door locks correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't small, a wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, using the use of a metal file instead a chisel and hammer.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that is able to move in and out of the hole in the inner edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also hooks into an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch could be all you need to fix it.

It's difficult to identify the screws that secure the latch to the door, however there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that lets you to insert a screwdriver in order to pry it off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle.

If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch start to separate. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to pull out.

After the old latch is removed it should be possible to insert the new latch into the slot with no difficulties. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.

Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the center of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll require a new one. If you're not changing locks, the new latch should fit in the existing recess and work just fine with the keys you have currently. Be sure to choose the latch with a rectangular cover plate that match your handles.

Take off the cover plate

Most doors have a gap between the jamb of the door and the edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, but not all do. If yours isn't have a handle, you'll need to make a hole through the door. This is the same process as opening a door locked, but you will need to be extra careful not to damage the door or frame.
