Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles
Window handles are a fundamental component of uPVC frames and must be matched to the frame that is currently in use. The spindle size is what determines if your new uPVC handles will fit.
Use the table below as a quick reference to determine the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will ensure you order the appropriate replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most common design of handle used on upvc windows (they're also often used in timber and aluminium too). The handles are square with a spindle that extends out from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism on the window. The handle is used to operate the locking mechanism around the window.
Window handles made of Espag are available in a variety of styles and functions. Some come with an option to push a button for a locked closed position and key-locking. (And fire-escape nonlocking if required.) Many meet the Secure by design specifications for an added level of security. They also come with a range of different lengths of spindles, that can be adjusted using spindle sleeves that decrease the size of the protruding spindle.
Yale has tested the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure that they meet all the standards you would expect. They work with Upvc windows as well as timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We offer a range of colours, and can match the handle with your hinges.
Another important feature of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the end of the handle up to where it rests on the frame, and it is essential to ensure it's so that you can ensure a tight and secure fit. Most of our handle styles are 43mm between screw hole centres, which is industry standard.
You can pick between straight or Cranked handles. Cranked handles can be utilized in situations where the handle of the espagnolette is close to the frame's edge. They give you more space to open up the window.
Our range of replacement handles for upvc includes a variety of finishes, styles, and colours that complement the decor of your home, including satin nickel, polished chrome and antique brass. Some of our products come with soft-close systems to minimize the sound your windows make when they shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle was designed for those who manufacture windows and want to provide their customers with an elegant and premium design. These handles can be used with either uPVC or aluminium windows. They work by having an incline on the handle which locks onto the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle is lockable so that it will only open when pushed. This gives you additional security. The handle comes in five different finishes, with left and right handed. This allows the fabricators to provide more windows.
These cockspur window handles are provided with 3 packing pieces of different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted for a wide range of backset sizes. Each piece of packing fits perfectly under the handle nose and can be removed or inserted into the size of the step to achieve a different backset which ranges from 9mm up to 21mm. The handle comes in both left and right handed models, with straight or curved nose options.
It is crucial to determine the height of your current handle prior to purchasing a new handle to ensure it will fit correctly. A wrong handle could cause a variety of issues such as the inability to shut the window. This can be a problem for homeowners and lead to excessive stress.
A cockspur handle is a type of handle that is found on older uPVC and timber windows, and also on some aluminium windows. These kinds of handles don't have any type of window lock, in contrast to an Espag handle which is used on more modern windows, which include shootbolts as well as an Espagnolette bar window lock.
The espagnolette (often abbreviated to "espag") handle is the most common handle type that can be that is found on the latest uPVC casement windows. The Yale Encloser locking mechanism is activated when you turn the espagnolette handles. This is safer than the traditional cockspur handle or a standard British handle. This is because when you turn the handle espagnolette it rotates multiple locks within the window frame to secure it.
Handle with Tilt and Turn
These windows are popular among people who want to increase the airflow in their homes while also adding a level of security. Like the name suggests, they have an option to tilt and turn that allows the window to tilt open at 90 degrees, allowing a small opening or to drop into a hopper design to allow for complete ventilation. Dual functionality gives them an attractive appearance that can really add to the appeal of your double glazed windows.
Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window styles that can increase the cost of installation. They require more parts and require more labor. These windows are worth the investment as they can add value and provide many benefits to your home.
The main benefit of these ladders is that you are able to clean your windows without external ladders. This is ideal for those who live in high-rise flats or in buildings, as it doesn't require you to be concerned about falling from an elevated position. Tilt-and-turn windows provide extra security, since they are locked when they are they are tilted. This means that intruders can't open them from inside.
These handles are often found on European style windows in Germany and other European countries, but they can also be used in UK homes. The uPVC handle replacement is typically one that is based on a spindle. It is made of 7mm spindles that are available in sizes of 38mm 44mm and 32mm. The base of this handle is also wider than other handles, which is why it's known as a "tilt-safe" window handle. It is only opened after the window has been locked into a closed position or tilted.
To replace a uPVC window handle that is tilted and turns, you need to first remove the old handle using a screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a spring loaded backplate, simply lift this and twist to reveal the two screw holes. By using a ruler or tape measure you can determine the distance between the two screw holes which is usually 43mm from centre to centre. Once you've got the measurement you can then select the appropriate size handle to be a perfect fit for your uPVC windows.
Aluminium Handle

Typically made from corrosion resistant and weatherproof alloys, the aluminum handle is robust enough to meet construction industry requirements. It can be easily shaped by industrial metal processing, like extrusion and forging, giving it the flexibility and virtually unlimited design options.
Additionally, aluminium is extremely durable and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. It is able to withstand the most extreme conditions. It is also immune to ultraviolet radiation and can be used indoors. It is extremely versatile and can be colored to match any aesthetic. The possibilities are endless. From classic emulations, hardware metals to vibrant colors of hundreds or pure colors.
In addition, unlike iron, aluminum does not rust or need regular maintenance. This is due to an oxide layer that naturally protects it from damage. The protective layer can also be strengthened with a variety of treatments, such as powder coating or anodizing to provide additional corrosion resistance. As a result, it can last for a long time without requiring any routine care or cleaning. It is also an environmentally friendly material that is 100 100% recyclable. This makes it the ideal choice for residential, industrial commercial and commercial structures. It also offers the highest efficiency in thermal efficiency and is fire-proof.
