Window Handles
Window handles come in many different styles and colors to fit your home. They can be used to open and close double-glazed windows using a hidden locking system.
It is important to measure the spindle prior to replacing your handle. This is the length at which the nose extends from the base plate or how much inside it is the lock.
Espag Handles
Espag handles are used to operate multi-point locks within double-glazed windows. The handle can be rotated around the window to improve security. Our selection of espagnolette handles for windows include straight and cranked designs in a variety of finishes including brass, chrome black, and forged.
Each handle is made of robust die-cast zinc that is powder-coated or plated for high corrosion resistance, impact strength and protection from scratching. They are designed to be used on uPVC and aluminium windows equipped with shoot bolt or espagnolette mechanisms and can be locked in the closed position using a key or push button to secure the handle.
The handle of an espagnolette is typically a 7mm squared rod which runs through the backplate of the lever and into the lock mechanism inside the sash frame. The handle is turned to activate the lock mechanism. When selecting a new espagnolette handle it is essential to take the length of the spindle into consideration as it will determine how the window can be opened. The size of the spindle will be marked with a number on the backplate of the handle, such as '5" 3/4" or 2/3" You will need to measure this against your current handle to determine if it is suitable.
Cranked handles are a more elegant design to straight handles. They can be ordered in left-handed versions (opened clockwise) and right-handed versions (opened anticlockwise) in accordance with the method you use to open your window. Cranked handles give you more space to open the window. This is ideal for windows close to the frame.
The cockspur handle is a different variation of the espagnolette design, this time with a cockspur-shaped nose that closes onto the striker plate in a similar manner to a multi-point espagnolette lock. This handle can be used to repair old cockspur handles on UPVC or windows made of aluminium.
The key-lock insert is available for both cockspur and cranked handle models. They come with a choice of hands and also a blanking plug in black if prefer to keep your window handle locked, or if you want to use it solely as a fire escape.
Cockspur Handles
The Cockspur handle is a traditional window handle which has an elongated spur (triangle bit) which presses up against the wedge found on the frame when the handle is closed. They are usually found on older windows made of aluminium or on uPVC casement windows which don't have an internal mechanism to secure the frame, so they rely on the cockspur handle for holding them together.
They are available in a broad selection of nose and nib height options to suit many different profiles. They're also suited for both left and right-hand window systems. They're the best solution for those looking to replace a faulty or worn window handle that doesn't require more intricate internal gadgetry.
Our Sparta Cockspur window handle is made from top-quality materials and is a favorite choice for a wide range of applications. It features a sleek and ergonomic design and comes with a standard lockable deadlock for added security. It's available in a variety of backset heights that fit all standard casement sizes and can be used with a range of window accessories.
In-line cockspur handle models are straight and move either left or right, while cranked cockspur handles feature short 'noses' that locates over a striker plate made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. It's easy to use and can be locked or unlocked by using a key for added security.
Espagnolette handles are regarded to be more secure than cockspur models as they use spinning spindles that operate multiple locks concealed within the frame. These handles are the perfect solution for those who need a secure handle for double-glazing. They come in a variety of designs to fit your home's decor.
It is essential to measure your windows prior to buying new frames. This will ensure that the handle and spindle are the correct size for your new frames. Select a product that meets the Secured By Design minimum requirements.
Tilt and Turn Handles
The functionality and benefits of tilt and turn windows are increasing. They come with a variety of opening options, and can be opened differently to allow fresh air into the home, or provide a fire escape.
These handles are similar to espagnolette handles but they have additional functions that make them more suitable to tilt and turn windows. The lever can be set downward when it's locked to close the window and 90 degrees to tilt the window open like a door or upwards to open the window as normal.
They feature a multipoint locking mechanism that is more effective against forced entry than double-glazed casement windows. The bottom hinge on the outside has metal locking pins that are engaged into a rail made of steel across the frame's inner side when the handle is in a closed position. The window's interior is held in place by two hinges in the corners of the bottom that can be opened upwards, a feature which makes them ideal for windows with larger openings and is great for ventilation.
The open mode is activated when the handle is turned to be facing upwards. This opens the window using an upward tilt that provides healthy ventilation and makes cleaning easier than ever. The sash is able to be pushed into the opposite direction on both sides of the windows to create a gap enough to allow the ladder or stool through.
Tilt and turn handles are usually larger than cockspur or espag handles as they need to be able to take on the larger and heavier frame sizes they are available in. They are spindle-based and use the exact same fixings that a normal handle for cockspur or espag employs, but they have a wider base and usually larger screw centers.
uPVC frames which are more affordable than aluminium or timber and don't require painting are the most well-known for these windows. However there are a variety of wood-effect finishes that are available. Aluminium is a second option for these styles of windows as it can be painted in any color to match the existing look of your home. It is also lighter than uPVC.
Spade or Blade Handles
If you are planning to upgrade your uPVC windows, or replacing those that were included with the property, it is crucial to choose handles that match the style and function of the window. In upvc door handles , the closing and locking mechanisms are as crucial as the frame, permitting you to operate your uPVC windows efficiently and with no hassle. Also, you must make sure that the handles are good quality and last well, rather than breaking easily or prone to damage.
One of the most sought-after kinds of handles is a blade or spade handle. These are commonly used on tilt and turn or casement-style uPVC windows. The lever operates an latch, catch or multi-point locking mechanism. The catch is attached to mortice stays or peg stay that sits inside the frame of your windows and provides an extra level of security and stability.
These handles are usually used on double glazed uPVC casement or tilt-and-turn windows. They are designed to be more ergonomic and provide a greater amount of leverage to open the window, making them easier to operate. They are also available in a range of styles that will suit all interior styles and preferences.
The handle itself will feature a spindle (7mm square) that extends out from the back that is used to interact with and penetrate the gearbox of the multi-point locking system inside the window. The window can be closed and locked more securely. Handles are available in a variety of sizes to fit frames of various sizes. Some manufacturers also offer straight and angled versions.
You can also increase the security of your uPVC windows by selecting handles that have a key-locking mechanism. These are perfect for uPVC windows and doors that are frequently used. They permit you to lock the window or door from the outside. This makes it difficult for burglars to break the handle or open the door open.
While there are arguments in favor of and against using a locking handle We believe that it is logical since it will provide an extra degree of security to your home. Even if you're not convinced that burglars will attempt to break into your home, the fact they might have a tougher time getting past the key-locking handles is likely to make them less likely to be interested.
