How to Replace a Saab 9-3 Key
The Saab 9-3 is a fantastic car that provides a lot of driver appeal. It has a powerful engine as well as good visibility. It also has a high safety rating.
It is vital to have two keys that are compatible for your vehicle. If you lose just one key, it can be very costly to buy the new one.
How to replace the ignition Key on the Saab 9-3
You need to replace the car key when it doesn't turn. This guide will show you how to replace the ignition key on the Saab 9-3. You will need a replacement key, a new reprogrammable battery as well as a new key-fob cover.
The most modern Saab models make use of transponders instead of a key made of metal to unlock the car and start it. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable battery on the key-fob can wear out and lose charge for any longer. This is particularly true if you use the same key for the same lock.
A professional locksmith can change the battery quite easily. You can also do it yourself if have the proper tools and a bit of patience. The first step is taking the key-fob from its case. Insert a flathead into the slot that is in the middle of your case. The plastic is thin and easily damaged.
Once the case has been opened, you can create the new key by combining the lower part of the old key with a transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is connected to the CIM properly, which could be the difference in replacing the sole key for your Saab 9-3.
How to Replace the Ignition Key in a Saab 900
If you don't have two keys, you'll need to remove the steering wheel and dashboard to gain access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, it is possible to remove the trim and dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash is removed, you can put an opening with a screwdriver behind the ignition switch.
The ignition cylinder is fitted with a lock for keys that can stop the vehicle from starting if you don't contain the key. If the ignition switch isn't working properly, check to see if the key is in the lock or within the ignition barrel. It's also an excellent idea to rotate your keys frequently and keep them clean so that one doesn't get bent.
Saab cars differ from other cars in the sense that they don't use traditional metal keys. Instead, the car recognizes electric signals from the key fob via an specialized microchip inside.
If you lose your sole working key fob, the dealer will charge the highest dollar for replacing the computer module (known as the CIM). We can reprogram the EEPROM on your computer to allow it to accept new keys without having to replace it. This can save you over 50% of the price the dealer charges! This is the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. How to Replace the Ignition Key on a Saab 9-5
The metal component of a classic Saab key is easy to duplicate, and it's also not much of a barrier against vehicle theft. The real security is the electronic component in the key-fob, which has a chip inside which recognizes your car once it's inserted into your ignition switch.
Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft system for more than a decade. It's not as efficient as a physical door lock however, it makes the theft of your car much more difficult. This is why every Saab owner should always keep an extra key in their possession.
The majority of new Saabs are delivered with two keys, but they can be added at an agent using a handheld device, called a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this is the NG 9-3 models, that have more modern, newer features that require keys-fobs.
If you lose all keys in the event of a loss, the dealer will replace your CIM or TWICE modules and charge you an extra fee. However, we can reprogram your EEPROM on your computer and make it accept new keys, without having to replace the expensive modules.
