How to Replace Door Handles
Door handles are an essential part of your home's decor. A new handle can bring your home's decor and interior up to date.
Over time your knobs on your doors may begin to feel stiff and even break. These are signs it's time to replace them. This guide will help you select the correct door handle replacement for your home.
Door Knobs
Door handles can enhance the look of your house while making it easier for people to open and close doors. They are available in a variety of colors, finishes, and styles to complement your decor. If yours is beginning to appear worn or just need an upgrade replacing them is simple and can be done in a couple of steps.
You'll need to find the shaft, or spindle through which the knob is attached to the door. Some knobs have a small opening that can be used with a screwdriver to remove the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a tiny slot or hole that you can press an activated detent pin that is spring-activated using a flathead. This pin lets go of the latch mechanism, and lets you to pull or push the knob.
After you have ahold of the shaft or spindle, remove the old door knob and replace it with the new one. Check that the latch is working properly before tightening the set screws.
After replacing the knob, put the rod for latching over the door's hole and then lock it using the rod mechanism on the second knob. Make sure the holes are aligned and then thread in the screws on the latch plate and tighten them.
Some people choose a smooth or brushed metal finish for the door hardware to give their home a modern and sleek style. This will match their furniture. Others prefer a more rustic style, which pairs well with spaces that are reminiscent of farmhouse. If you have a member of your family who has mobility issues, you might prefer a lever style or rim lock, which requires less pressure to operate.
Other aspects are being looked at more and more when it comes to the design of door handles. Infection control and accessibility are two major issues that have led to the creation of new and innovative designs for handles, such as ones which can be operated by the forearm of a person.
Latch
The latch that holds the handle of your door open may wear out as time passes. It is simple to change the latch on your door handle. This will make an enormous difference in the way it opens and closes.
Depending on the kind of knob you are using the latch could be part of the knob itself or it might be an independent piece attached to the door. In either case, you'll need to follow the same process to remove and replace. It's easy to remove the old latch, especially in the case of doors with a "magic" button. This tiny pressure-slot, found on the side knob, is what you will have to press to pop the latch out of the handle.
If upvc door handle doesn't have this magic button you'll need to remove the cover plates that are placed over the latch plate. They are typically rectangular or circular and can be removed by using a screwdriver to pull them off of the handle. Some have slots where you can put your screwdriver, whereas others simply snap off.
Next, you will want to loosen the two machine screws holding the latch and inner plate to the door handle. You will need to store the screws that are shorter and have sharp tips in a safe place in order to reuse them in the future. Once the screws are removed, you are able to remove the latch plate and mechanism from the hole and put it aside.
You can now begin installing the new latch. Place the latch plate in the door hole and secure it with the hardware supplied. Make sure that the square pin in the interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the handle and is aligned with the other holes for screws in the handle. Then, push the exterior latch plate onto and secure it using the screws supplied.
Strike Plate
It is not uncommon to replace a door handle if it feels loose, or isn't locking properly. This is typically caused by malfunctioning parts of the latching mechanism, such as a striking plate that's either too short or has moved up or down on the doorjamb as time passes. This simple fix allows you to replace your existing strike plate with a new, longer one that can provide greater security and ensure that your door stays shut.
To determine if the issue is due to the strike plate, apply lipstick or similar marking material to the bolt that is used to latch. Close the door, and then try to latch it. If the mark is below your strike plate hole, it indicates that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is higher or below the strikeplate hole the strikeplate is likely to have been moved upwards or downwards on the doorjamb.
You might be able to install the new strikeplate in place over the old one using the screws included with it, depending on your door. However, you may need to drill holes first, and then chisel out some of the wood to ensure it's a good fit. If this is the case, you must be cautious not to chisel too much or you may ruin the strength of your doorjamb.
You can also consider installing a new box strike plate, which will give the lock a stronger hold on the door and requires more force to open it. Typically it will require two longer screws that anchor the strike plate to the frame of the door. To do this, you'll have to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel out the wood to make space for the new one.
This hard-to-find strike plate is specifically designed to work with rim locks from the past, and it's made from robust solid brass with an extremely thick. This kit includes wood screws and machine screws, so you can select the appropriate hardware to suit your requirements. Keep in mind that wood screws have a pointed point, while machine screws are more blunt.
