Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) imaging uses two types of image reconstruction. methods, i.e., filtered back projection (FBP) method and an iterative reconstruction (IR) method. Although the effect of the difference in the image reconstruction method on the image quality has been reported, these studies were performed using different apparatus or conditions. In this study, we examined the effect of image reconstruction on the image quality using the same equipment under the same conditions.

We measured reflection artifact, sharpness, signal detection ability, and granularity using DBT-photographed images by both the FBP and the IR methods.

Although the difference between the two methods was subtle for granularity, IR was found to be superior to FBP in all items tested.

Recent studies have suggested a contribution of T cell activation in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Interleukin-2 (IL-2)-inducible T cell kinase (ITK) regulates T cell activation, including proliferation, and cytokine production. In this study, we investigated the effect of the topically administered selective ITK inhibitor BMS-509744 on imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation in mice. Topically administered BMS-509744 ameliorated IMQ-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation as shown by decreased skin lesions, epidermal thickening, and cell infiltration into the dermis. These suppressive effects occurred with lower numbers of cluster of differentiation antigen-3+ (CD3+) T cells and T helper subset 17 (Th17)-related cytokine expression in IMQ-treated skin. IMQ-induced upregulation of proinflammatory cytokine expression was also inhibited by topical application of BMS-509744 in IMQ-treated skin. Our report showed for the first time that topical application of BMS-509744 ameliorated psoriasis-like skin inflammation in mice, which is likely mediated by the inhibition of T cell activation in the skin lesions.Pre-emptive evacuation orders following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) in March 2011 and subsequent regulatory limits regarding contaminated food, milk, and water minimized the external and internal radiation exposure doses of nearby residents. However, with regard to implementation of iodine thyroid blocking (ITB), residents were confused because no information on the matter was released by the central and/or local governments. Based on lessons learned from the FDNPS accident, many countries have revised their guidelines regarding ITB during nuclear disasters. To adequately revise such guidelines and ensure effective ITB implementation during a nuclear disaster, however, residents' perceptions of ITB must be clarified. In this study, the perception of risks associated with ITB was investigated in mothers residing near the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP) in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Of the 520 mothers surveyed, 467 (89.8%) expressed anxiety regarding the administration of potassium iodine (KI) to their children. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the mothers' anxiety regarding the administration of KI to their children was positively correlated with their wish to consult an expert about KI and their hesitation to let their children eat foods produced in Fukushima, and negatively correlated with having confidence about administering KI to their children. Careful communication of potential risks to mothers residing near nuclear power plants is thus critical for implementing effective ITB in children.Thyroid nodules (TN) are common in the general population, and the clinical importance of diagnosing thyroid nodules is based on excluding the possibility of thyroid cancer, which occurs in 7-15% of cases. The thyroid gland, owing to its superficial location, is easily accessible via thermography, a noninvasive method of recording body temperature that measures infrared radiation emitted by the body surface. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the temperature differences between benign and malignant TN by using thermography. We conducted a cross-sectional study where 147 TN were divided into two groups the first group included 120 benign nodules and the other included 27 malignant nodules. All the nodules were subjected to ultrasound, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and thermography. On analyzing the thermography results, the benign nodules had a higher temperature at the beginning of the thermography evaluation, and the malignant nodules showed a higher temperature in the middle and at the end (Ft). Using the relationships, it was observed that the temperature delta (ΔT), ΔT nodule/ΔT healthy, ΔT nodule minus ΔT healthy, and nodule Ft minus Ft of the healthy region were higher in malignant nodules. The ROC curve analysis of ΔT demonstrated a cutoff point of 2.38°C, with a sensitivity of 0.963 and specificity of 0.992. Malignant nodules have higher temperatures than benign nodules on thermographic evaluation. This finding suggests that thermography can be a useful tool in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.The biological and psychological significance of oxytocin is increasingly recognized; however, reliable assays of oxytocin in biological samples have not been developed. We raised a new oxytocin polyclonal rabbit antibody against synthetic oxytocin. The affinity of antibodies to oxytocin was examined by a radio-immunoassay and compared with that of a previously validated antibody. One antibody showed affinity for oxytocin in the radio-immunoassay. We developed a solid-phase ELISA for oxytocin using this antibody and compared it with existing methods. The newly developed ELISA showed comparable results using urine samples but not using serum samples. These results indicate that the new ELISA is useful for urinary oxytocin; further modifications, such as different extraction methods, are needed for its application to serum oxytocin.The administration with high dose (close to LD50) of thioacetamide (TAA), a hepatotoxicant used widely to induce experimental liver lesions, develops hepatocellular necrosis and subsequent inflammation (mainly M1-/M2-macrophages without neutrophil infiltration) in rats. We analyzed rat livers treated with a low dose TAA (50 mg/kg/body weight) at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 48 hr. The lesions in the affected centrilobular areas consisted of slight hepatocyte degeneration at 12 hr, and inflammatory cell infiltration at 18 and 24 hr; the lesions recovered until 48 hr. Translocation of intranuclei to cytoplasm of HMGB1, a representative molecule of damage-associated molecular patterns, was seen in some hepatocytes mainly at 6, 12, and 18 hr. As an interesting finding, at 12 hr, myeloperoxidase-positive neutrophil infiltration was observed in the affected centrilobular area. Additionally, CD68 M1-/CD163 M2-macrophages increased consistently at 12 to 48 hr. CXCL1, a chemokine for induction of neutrophils, began to increase at 6 hr and gradually increased at 12, 18 and 24 hr, apparently corresponding to the appearance of neutrophils. Collectively, the present findings at the low dose TAA indicated that along with M1-/M2-macrophages, neutrophils were characteristically seen, which might be elicited by cytoplasmic translocation of HMGB1 from nuclei. However, the previous studies included various machines and protocols of radiotherapy. Therefore, we aimed to retrospectively compare the prognosis among cases treated with palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and a combination of them with united machine and protocol of radiotherapy. When compared overall survival and progression free survival, there was no significant difference among these three groups. The data of this study suggested that similar efficacy could be achieved by palliative hypofractionated radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of them.Burnout syndrome (BOS) is a work-related constellation of symptoms characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. A cross-sectional survey was performed to study the prevalence of BOS among a randomly selected sample of 280 Italian Red Cross volunteers. A socio-demographic questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)-HSS were used to collect data. 241 volunteers participated (response rate 86.1%). A significant proportion of the workers had BOS subscale scores in the highest tertile emotional exhaustion 8.0%, depersonalization 35.9% and perceived lack of accomplishment 23.5%, respectively. Volunteers in emergency care reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion (p=0.004) and depersonalization (p=0.001), and lower level of personal accomplishment (p=0.042) than volunteers engaged in non-healthcare social and administrative duties. These findings support the opportunity of a set of administrative, organizational and individual preventive interventions for emergency volunteers' mental health.The development of hearing in mammals requires the formation and maturation of a highly organized and specialized epithelium known as the organ of Corti. This epithelium contains two types of cells, the sensory cells, which are the true receptors of auditory information, and the surrounding supporting cells, which are composed of a highly developed cytoskeleton essential to the architecture of the mature organ of Corti. The supporting cells are the only mammalian cells reported to contain the unusual 15-protofilament microtubules. In this paper, we show that 15-protofilament microtubules appear between the second and fourth day after birth in the pillar cells of the organ of Corti in mice. We also show that contrary to what has been described in the nematode worm Caenorhabiditis. elegans, microtubule acetylation is not essential for the formation of 15-protofilament microtubules in mice but is required for fine-tuning of their diameter.Key words Acetylation, cytoskeleton, microtubule, inner ear, supporting cells.Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are environmental pollutants and nonessential elements in the body. Both metals induce the development of hypertension which is associated with oxidative stress. Curcumin (CUR) is a polyphenolic compound with strong antioxidant activity. The present study evaluated the effect of CUR on oxidative stress, alteration of vascular responsiveness and hypertension induced by exposure to either Pb, Cd or the combination of Pb and Cd. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to low level of lead acetate (100 mg/L) and/or cadmium chloride (10 mg/L) in the drinking water for 16 weeks. The control animals received deionized water as drinking water. CUR (100 mg/kg) or propylene glycol as vehicle was intragastrically administered once daily for the last 4 weeks. Exposure to Pb, Cd or the combination induced increases in blood pressure and peripheral vascular resistance, and decreased the blood pressure response to intravenous infusion to acetylcholine. Supplementation with CUR significantly reduced blood pressure, alleviated oxidative stress, and increased plasma nitrate/nitrite and glutathione in the blood. The effects of CUR were associated with the improvement of vascular responsiveness, upregulation of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase and downregulation of the NADPH oxidase expression. Furthermore, CUR reduced the metal levels in blood, aorta, liver and kidney. Altogether, exposure to the combination of Pb and Cd aggravated hypertension and oxidative stress, and CUR effectively ameliorated these adverse events in metal exposed animals. Data indicate that CUR may be useful as a dietary supplement for protection against the noxious effects of the heavy metals.Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), an incurable lung disease of unknown cause, often presents with losses of skeletal muscle mass. IPF requires comprehensive care, but it has not been investigated which skeletal muscle mass index reflects holistic management factors pulmonary function, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and physical performance. We compared three representative indices of skeletal muscle mass with holistic management factors in IPF patients. Twenty-seven mild to severe IPF patients (21 male) with the mean age of 76.1 ± 5.9 years were enrolled. The three indices were appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), cross-sectional area of pectoralis major (PMCSA), and cross-sectional area of erector spinae muscles (ESMCSA). ASMI is considered as a gold standard for sarcopenia assessment, while PMCSA and ESMCSA are frequently used in IPF. As PROs, we assessed breathlessness with the modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale (mMRC), symptoms with the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test (CAT), and health-related quality of life with St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). For physical performance, peripheral muscle strength and 6-min walk distance (6MWD) were investigated. In this cross-sectional study, ASMI showed the greatest number of significantly correlated indices, such as pulmonary function, peripheral muscle strength, 6MWD, mMRC, and SGRQ. PMCSA showed the next greatest number of correlations, with peripheral muscle strength, 6MWD, and mMRC, whereas ESMCSA showed no significant correlations with any index. Thus, ASMI correlated with both PROs and physical performance, and PMCSA correlated mainly with physical performance. In conclusion, assessing ASMI is helpful for the comprehensive care of patients with IPF.Gastric contractions show two specific patterns in many species, migrating motor contractions (MMC) and postprandial contractions (PPCs), that occur in the fasted and fed states, respectively. In this study, we examined the role of somatostatin (SST) in gastric motility both in vivo and in vitro using the Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus). We performed in vivo recordings of gastric motility and in vitro organ bath experiments using S. murinus, which was recently established as a small laboratory animal for use in tests of gastrointestinal motility. SST (1.65 µg kg-1 min-1) was intravenously administered during phase II of MMC and PPCs. Next, the effect of SST on motilin-induced gastric contractions at phase I of MMC was measured. Cyclosomatostatin (CSST), an SST receptor antagonist, was administered at the peak of phase III of MMC. In addition, the effect of SST (10-11-10-9 M) on motilin-induced gastric contractions was evaluated using an organ bath experiment in vitro. In conscious, free-moving S. murinus, the administration of SST decreased the occurrence of the spontaneous phase II of MMC and PPCs. Pretreatment with SST and octreotide suppressed the induction of motilin-induced gastric contractions both in vivo and in vitro. Administration of CSST before the peak of spontaneous phase III contractions had no effect on gastric contractions. Endogenous SST is not involved in the regulation of gastric MMC and PPCs, but exogenous SST suppresses spontaneous gastric contractions. Thus, SST would be good for treating abnormal gastrointestinal motility disorders.To better understanding Brucella abortus infection, serum metabolites of B. abortus-infected and -uninfected mice were analyzed and twenty-one metabolites were tentatively identified at 3 and 14 days post-infection (d.p.i.). Level of most lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) was found to increase in infected mice at 3 d.p.i., while it was decreased at 14 d.p.i. as compared to uninfected mice. In contrast, acylcarnitines were initially reduced at 3 d.p.i then elevated after two-weeks of infection, while hydroxysanthine was increased at 14 d.p.i. in infected mice. Our findings suggest that the significant changes in LPCs and other identified metabolites may serve as potential biomarkers in acute phase of B. abortus infection.The aim of this study was to reproduce severe pneumonic lesions, similar to those during naturally-occurring porcine respiratory disease complex, in pigs dually inoculated with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae at 6 weeks of age, followed by inoculation with porcine circovirus type 2 at two weeks after. Time and sequence of infection with three pathogens mirror Asian field conditions. Microscopically, interstitial pneumonia and peribronchiolar lymphoid hyperplasia are considered the most characteristic lung lesions in infected pigs. The results of the present study demonstrate that inoculation of pigs with these three pathogens can lead to severe interstitial pneumonia with peribronchial or peribronchiolar lymphoid hyperplasia and fibrosis.Paragonimiasis is a particular foodborne parasitic disease that is endemic to southern Kyushu, including Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. We previously detected Paragonimus westermani triploid larvae in meat samples obtained from wild boars and sika deer hunted in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture. These mammals act as paratenic hosts and their meat is a source of human paragonimiasis. Paratenic host mammals and humans become infected with the lung fluke, P. westermani, following consumption of second intermediate hosts, freshwater crab species, namely, Geothelphusa dehaani or Sawagani in Japanese, and Eriocheir japonica or Mokuzugani in Japanese. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the current infection status of P. westermani in freshwater crabs in Akune City. We collected freshwater crabs from 15 locations and found that the prevalence of P. westermani metacercariae was 1.6% for Sawagani (15 of 941 examined) and 22.1% for Mokuzugani (21 of 95 examined). Based on the morphological characterization of metacercariae and molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer 2 region and mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene region using PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing, all metacercariae were identified as the triploid form of P. westermani. These results indicate that Sawagani and Mokuzugani serve as second intermediate hosts to maintain the life cycle of triploid P. westermani. Further, infection in crabs potentially leads to subsequent P. westermani infections in wild mammals, including wild boars and sika deer, both of which are considered important types of game meat in Japan.Copy number gain (CNG) and/or protein overexpression of ErbB2 have been observed in human breast cancer patients and are associated with poor prognosis. Similarly, ErbB2 overexpression has also been observed in canine mammary carcinoma; however, data on ErbB2 copy number is limited. The purposes of this study were to evaluate ErbB2 copy number in dogs with mammary carcinoma and to investigate associations of ErbB2 CNG with ErbB2 expression, histological and clinical characteristics, and survival. DNA samples were isolated from 59 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded canine mammary gland tissues (34 carcinoma, 14 adenoma, and 11 normal). Using a digital PCR assay, the ErbB2 copy number in these samples was determined as compared to a reference gene on canine chromosome 8. ErbB2 CNG was detected in 14/34 (41%) carcinomas and 2/14 (14%) adenomas. ErbB2 overexpression was observed in 3/34 (9%) carcinomas but not in adenomas. Neither ErbB2 CNG nor ErbB2 overexpression were detected in the normal controls. There was no significant association of the ErbB2 CNG with histological and clinical characteristics such as age, neutered status, histological grade, tumor size, lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and clinical stage in the dogs with mammary carcinoma. The presence of ErbB2 CNG, but not ErbB2 overexpression, was significantly related to the shorter overall survival. These findings suggest that ErbB2 CNG is a prognostic factor in dogs with mammary carcinoma.Unlike echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cardiac MRI) results in a near-exact assessment of cardiac structures and function. However, most veterinary studies have focused on dogs with normal cardiac function. We hypothesized that there would be significant differences in cardiac measurements between cardiac MRI and echocardiography when left ventricular (LV) function was abnormal. This study was undertaken to compare measurements of LV function produced by cardiac MRI and echocardiography in dogs whose LV function was altered by pharmacological agents. This study was conducted with six healthy beagle dogs. We increased left ventricular contractility by administration of dobutamine; we decreased cardiac contractility with esmolol. Stroke volume measurements were made by using both cardiac MRI and echocardiography under seven different conditions with general anesthesia control, three doses of esmolol (100, 200, and 500 µg/kg/min), and three doses of dobutamine (10, 20, and 50 µg/kg/min). Experiments involving each condition were conducted at least 1 week apart. When LV contractility was normal, ejection fraction (EF) and stroke volume (SV), as measured by echocardiography and cardiac MRI, were not significantly different. However, when contractility was changed by pharmacological agents, EF and SV were overestimated by echocardiography, compared to MRI. Evaluation of cardiac function in patients treated with pharmacological agents should be conducted carefully because EF and SV measured by echocardiography can be overestimated, compared with EF and SV obtained by cardiac MRI.
Stroke is well known to lead to hypertension; nevertheless, the role of vascular function in hypertension remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to clarify the mechanism underlying increased arterial stiffness following stroke.

The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) was measured in five New Zealand White rabbits. Under general anesthesia, intracranial pressure (ICP) was increased by injecting saline (15 mL) into the cisterna magna. ICP was monitored using a catheter inserted into the subarachnoid space via right frontal bone craniotomy. Blood pressure (BP), CAVI, and common carotid flow (CCF) were evaluated, and the responses of these parameters to increased ICP were analyzed.

Saline injection into the cisterna magna increased the ICP by over 20 mmHg. Both BP and CAVI increased from 63.2±4.84 to 128.8±14.68 mmHg and from 4.02±0.28 to 4.9±0.53, respectively. Similarly, BP and CCF increased. When hexamethonium was administered before the increase in ICP, the increase in BP (132.2±9.41 mmHg with 10 mg/kg hexamethonium vs. 105.6±11.01 mmHg with 100 mg/kg hexamethonium) and CAVI (5.02±0.64 with 10 mg/kg hexamethonium vs. 4.82±0.42 with 100 mg/kg hexamethonium) were suppressed in a dose-dependent manner.

Although circ_0008274 has been demonstrated as a potential oncogenic circRNA in PTC, our understanding of its molecular determinants is limited. The levels of circ_0008274, miR-154-3p and solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) mRNA were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). SLC7A11 protein level was assessed by western blot. Cell apoptosis, migration, and adhesion capacities were examined by flow cytometry, transwell and cell adhesion assays, respectively. The targeted correlations among circ_0008274, miR-154-3p and SLC7A11 were confirmed by a dual-luciferase reporter assay. Animal studies were performed to observe the role of circ_0008274 in tumor growth in vivo. Our data showed that the high levels of circ_0008274 and SLC7A11 were associated with poor prognosis of PTC patients. The knockdown of circ_0008274 or SLC7A11 enhanced PTC cell apoptosis and repressed cell migration and adhesion in vitro. Circ_0008274 knockdown suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, circ_0008274 modulated SLC7A11 expression by acting as a sponge of miR-154-3p. SLC7A11 was a functional mediator of circ_0008274 in regulating PTC cell apoptosis, migration and adhesion in vitro, and miR-154-3p overexpression repressed PTC progression in vitro by targeting SLC7A11. Our findings identified that the knockdown of circ_0008274 repressed PTC malignant progression at least in part through regulating the miR-154-3p/SLC7A11 axis, providing a promising therapeutic opportunity for PTC treatment.We have reviewed the available literature on thyroid diseases and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and data from the previous coronavirus pandemic, the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic. We learned that both SARS and COVID-19 patients had thyroid abnormalities. In the limited number of SARS cases, where it was examined, decreased serum T3, T4 and TSH levels were detected. In a study of survivors of SARS approximately 7% of the patients had hypothyroidism. In the previous evaluation evidence was found that pituitary function was also affected in SARS. Others suggested a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction. One result published recently indicates that a primary injury to the thyroid gland itself may play a key role in the pathogenesis of thyroid disorders in COVID-19 patients, too. Subacute thyroiditis, autoimmune thyroiditis and an atypical form of thyroiditis are complications of COVID-19. Thyroid hormone dysfunction affects the outcome by increasing mortality in critical illnesses like acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is a leading complication in COVID-19. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 is a membrane-bound enzyme, which is also expressed in the thyroid gland and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) uses it for docking, entering as well as replication. Based on the available results obtained in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, beside others, we suggest that it is necessary to monitor thyroid hormones in COVID-19.
Cadaveric lobar lung transplantation (L-LTx) is developed to overcome donor-recipient size mismatch. Controversial short- and long-term outcomes following L-LTx have been reported compared to full-sized lung transplantation (F-LTx). This study reports long-term outcomes after L-LTx.

We reviewed patients undergoing lung transplantation (LTx) between 2000 and 2016. The decision to perform L-LTx was made based mainly on donor-recipient height discrepancy and visual assessment of donor lungs. Predicted donor-recipient total lung capacity (TLC) ratio was calculated more recently. Primary outcome was overall survival.

In all, 370 bilateral LTx were performed during the study period, among those 250 (67%) underwent F-LTx and 120 (32%) underwent L-LTx, respectively. One- and 5-year survival rates were 85% vs. 90% and 53% vs. 63% for L-LTx and F-LTx, respectively (p = 0.16). Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD)-free survival at 5 years was 48% in L-LTx vs. 51% in F-LTx recipients (p = 0.89), respectively. Coagulation factor screening and APTT mixing test achieved a diagnosis of acquired hemophilia A (AHA). Bypassing agent therapy was indicated and lobectomy was successfully performed without bleeding complications. APTT returned to normal after the operation without any additional treatment for AHA. The pathogenesis of AHA is still unknown and there is no evidence for hemostatic strategy for AHA patients requiring surgery. This study supports the importance of hemostatic therapy and suggests that malignancy might cause AHA.The prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in small mammals dwelling in the city was used as an indicator of AMR bacteria in the environment. We captured 87 small mammals (79 brown rats and 8 house shrews) in four markets, Bogor, Indonesia in October 2019, and we obtained 20 AMR Escherichia coli (E. coil) from 18 brown rats and two house shrews. Of these, eight isolates were determined to be multi-drug resistant (MDR) E. coli, suggesting the potential contamination of AMR E. coli in the markets in Bogor, Indonesia, and that mammals, including humans, are at risk of infection with AMR E. coli from environment.Post-import from the Republic of Indonesia to Japan in 2017, two juvenile, captive bred Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and hematemesis, and died. The ruminal papillae were weakly formed (0.3-0.5 cm long) and unevenly distributed. The cellulae and cristae reticuli were underdeveloped; the cristae were 0.4-0.7 cm in height and milky white. The keratinized layer in the stratified squamous epithelium was thickened. Ruminal pH was 5.25, and ruminal volatile fatty acid concentration was 11.7 mM. The steer's severely retarded growth was considered to be caused by malnutrition due to developmental and functional failure of the forestomach.Urolithiasis is a disease often seen in tortoises at veterinary hospitals, however there have been no comprehensive research reports of tortoises with urolithiasis in Japan. In this study, we analyzed tortoises diagnosed with urolithiasis at three domestic veterinary hospitals. Based on medical records, we assessed the diagnostic method, species, sex, body weight, dietary history, husbandry, clinical signs, clinical examination, treatment for urolithiasis, and clinical outcome. The total number of cases in the 3 facilities was 101. As for species of tortoises, the most common was the African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) with 42 cases (41.6%), followed by the Indian star tortoise (Geochelone elegans) with 30 cases (29.7%). Six other species were confirmed to have calculi. Almost all cases (99 cases, 98%) had a single calculus, and only 2 had multiple calculi. The prevalence of urolithiasis for the total number of tortoises having visited to one institution during the same period was 5.1%. Of the 86 cases that underwent calculi removal, 64 (74.4%) were successfully removed via the vent, and the efficacy of this method was confirmed. Nineteen cases (22%) were approached via plastronotomy, among which only 2 died postoperatively. In this study, we could not clarify the relationship between calculi formation and diets or other husbandry factors.
No single optimal test reliably determines the pancreatic cyst subtype. Following EUS-FNA, the "string sign" test can differentiate mucinous from nonmucinous cysts. However, the interobserver variability of string sign results has not been studied.

An experienced endosonographer performed EUS-FNA of pancreatic cysts on different patients and was recorded on video performing the string sign test for each. The videos were shared internationally with 14 experienced endosonographers, with a survey for each video "Is the string sign positive?" and "If the string sign is positive, what is the length of the formed string?" Also asked "What is the cutoff length for string sign to be considered positive?" Interobserver variability was assessed using the kappa statistic (κ).

A total of 112 observations were collected from 14 endosonographers. Regarding string sign test positivity, κ was 0.6 among 14 observers indicating good interrater agreement (P < 0.001) while κ was 0.38 when observers were compared to the index endosonographer demonstrating marginal agreement (P < 0.001). Among observations of the length of the string in positive samples, 89.8% showed >5 mm of variability (P < 0.001), indicating marked variability. There was poor agreement on the cutoff length for a string to be considered positive.

Balloon enteroscopy-assisted ERCP (BE-ERCP) has become the first-line therapy for biliopancreatic anastomotic strictures. However, it is not always successful, and salvage methods have not been established. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of EUS-guided transanastomotic drainage using a forward-viewing (FV) echoendoscope.

Of eight cases wherein BE-ERCP treatment failed due to severe or complete benign anastomotic stricture, seven cases underwent EUS-guided choledochojejunostomy, and EUS-guided pancreaticojejunostomy was applied in one case after intubating an FV echoendoscope into the anastomotic site.

The success rate of reaching the target site was 100% (8/8) for patients after modified Child resection. The median time to reach the anastomosis was 5 min (range 3-17 min), and the technical success rate for drainage was 75% (6/8). The median total procedure time was 33.5 min (range 22-45 min) for six successful cases. Cautery dilatation catheters were necessary to dilate the puncture site in all cases, and no early complications were observed. During the follow-up period (median 13.3 months [range 6.5-60.3]), recurrence of the stricture occurred in one case, and a stent-free status was achieved after 6-12 months of stent placement in five cases.

We initially reported EUS-guided lauromacrogol ablation (EUS-LA) to treat pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs); however, its long-term effectiveness remains unknown. This study was performed to further determine the effectiveness of EUS-LA in a larger population with a long-term follow-up based on 5 years of experience with EUS-LA.

From April 2015 to April 2020, 279 patients suspected of having PCNs were prospectively enrolled, and seventy patients underwent EUS-guided ablation using lauromacrogol alone. Fifty-five patients underwent follow-up, 35 of whom had a follow-up duration of at least 12 months. The effectiveness of ablation was determined based on volume changes.

Among the fifty female and twenty male patients with an overall mean age of 50.3 years, cysts were located in the head/neck of the pancreas in 37 patients (52.9%) and in the body/tail of the pancreas in 33 patients (47.1%). The adverse events rate was 3.6% (3/84), with 14 patients undergoing a second ablation. Among the 55 patients who underwent follow-up, the median cystic volume sharply decreased from 11,494.0 mm
to 523.6 mm
(P < 0.001), and the mean diameter decreased from 32.0 mm to 11.0 mm (P < 0.001). Postoperative imaging showed complete resolution (CR) in 26 patients (47.3%) and partial resolution (PR) in 15 (27.3%) patients. CR was observed in 18 (51.4%), and PR was observed in 9 (25.7%) patients among the 35 patients followed for at least 12 months.

The tumor can mimic fibroadenoma clinically, radiologically and histologically. Ductal carcinoma in-situ in the epithelial component of phyllodes tumor is very rare. When ductal carcinoma in-situ is detected within the specimen, the management of treatment changes completely. We report a rare case of low grade ductal carcinoma in-situ arising in a malignant phyllodes tumor in a 55-year-old female patient.Peritonitis is a common and serious complication of peritoneal dialysis and often primary factor of change over to hemodialysis treatment. Raoultella planticola is known as as environmental bacterium and rarely causes infections in humans. We present a case of peritoneal dialysis related peritonitis due to Raoultella planticola and review the clinical manifestations and treatment options of this microorganism. As far as we know, this is the third case of Raoultella planticola peritonitis in the literature.
We aimed to evaluate the findings of whole-body computed tomography (WBCT) in pediatric high-energy trauma patients and to determine the distribution of injuries.

The WBCT images of 1132 pediatric patients who were admitted to emergency department between 2013 and 2018 for high-energy trauma were evaluated retrospectively. Six hundred and twenty patients with abdominal, chest, head, and skeletal injuries were included.

Using the WBCT images, we detected skeletal injuries in 557 pediatric patients; spinal, rib, extremity, and pelvic fractures were detected in 113, 57, 51, and 37 patients, respectively. Craniofacial fractures were viewed in 299 patients. We detected intracranial hemorrhage, pulmonary contusion, pneumothorax, and solid organ injuries in 102, 115, 45, and 55 pediatric patients, respectively.

To investigate the effect of intravitreal dexamethasone implant on central foveal thickness and choroidal thickness in retinal vein occlusion.

Clinical records and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of 41 naïve patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO), who were initially treated with intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implant between 2016 and 2017 at Kocatepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology were investigated. Collected data included age and sex of the patients, crystalline lens status, baseline and final intraocular pressure, and OCT parameters including central foveal thickness and choroidal thickness.

Twenty-two (53.7%) female and 19 (46.3%) male patients were enrolled in the study. There were 30 phakic and 11 pseudophakic patients. The intraocular pressure increased significantly from 15.19 mmHg to 17.8 mmHg (P = 0.005), and cataract extraction was performed in two patients who developed cataract after the treatment. There was a significant decrease in the central foimplant therapy on the choroidal thickness of the patients with RVO.
The use of paravertebral block (PVB) for postoperative analgesia in the thoracic surgery has increased in recent years. However, the traditional methods used to evaluate the success and adequacy of the block are time-consuming, subjective and depend on the patient's compliance. Therefore, the search still continues to find a method to objectively evaluate the success and adequacy of the paravertebral block.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Perfusion Index (PI) measured by pulse oximetry technology was an early and quantitative marker for the success of PVB. We also aimed to compare the PI and pinprick method.

The study included a total of 38 patients undergoing elective thoracotomy surgery within the age group of 18-65 years, with class I-II American Society of Anesthesiologists' (ASA) physical status classification. Thoracic PVB was performed for all patients using 20 mL of 5% bupivacaine under ultrasound guidance. After the block was performed, PI measurements were made from the fin that PI is an objective, fast, practical and non-invasive method, when compare with pinprick method, that can be used to evaluate PVB success.
Böhler's angle (BA) and the crucial angle of Gissane (CAG) are the most frequently used objective measurements for the follow-up of fixation following calcaneus fracture surgery. However, the measurements of these angles by different people can affect the results and cause conflicting interpretations of different results obtained. This has caused confusion in the literature.

The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and disagreement of BA and the CAG, and to interrogate the veracity of angular changes in the postoperative period of calcaneal fractures.

In the first round, a total of 82 postoperative lateral radiographs were investigated to assess the inter-tester reliability and disagreement. Second round; all radiographs were re-evaluated by two testers 15 days after the first measurement. These values were used to assess the intra and inter-tester reliability, disagreement and false negative/positive angular change. All measurements were performed separately by a radiologist and an orthr change.
These angles alone should not be considered to be of guidance in the postoperative period. If any angular change is determined on the lateral radiographs, this could arise from a disagreement or false angular change.
Nigeria ranks third among the countries with the highest HIV/AIDS burden in the world, next only to India and South Africa. The North-Central zone which Kwara State belongs to has the highest concentration of HIV prevalence rate of 7.5%, while the North-Western zone recorded the lowest prevalence of 2.1%; Kwara state has a prevalence rate of 2.2%.

The study assessed the coping strategies adopted by patients attending HIV clinics in a North-central city of Nigeria.

The study design was descriptive cross-sectional involving 384 HIV-positive patients who were systematically recruited at 5 public service delivery sites in Ilorin- a North-central city, Nigeria was used for the study. Coping strategies were measured using the Brief COPE scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0. Level of significance was pre-determined at P value <0.05 at a confidence level of 95%.

Female respondents constituted 222 (58.0%) while males were 162 (42.0%). Respondents experienced varying proportion of coping strategies of which Self-distraction 288 (75.0%), active coping 249 (64.8%), emotional support 228 (59.4%), among others were the major strategies adopted by respondents.

HIV is a chronic disease with heavy burden on both patients and health facility rendering services for the care of these patients. A good proportion of respondents interviewed adopted varying coping strategies. Sustained social and psychological support will improve further the coping strategies of living with HIV.

Complex cardiac anomalies are a set of associated heart structural anomalies requiring some adaptive mechanism to maintain life.

This is to determine pattern and prevalence of common complex cardiac anomalies among children presenting for cardiac surgery in Enugu.

The children that present for cardiac surgery in our center over a six-month period were admitted and rescreened using a standardized echocardiographic method, information on biodata, oxygen saturation and 2D echo diagnosis were recorded in a proforma.

A hundred and one (101) children with different structural heart diseases presented for cardiac surgery, 53 females and 48 males, 99 (98%) had congenital heart defects (49 cyanotic and 50 acyanotic). Complex cardiac anomalies were noted among 49 and 50 were non-complex, 6 (12.2%) acyanotic, and 43 (87.8%) cyanotic complex P < 0.01. This was noted among 21 females and 28 males. Children less than 3 years had 31 cases (63.3%) of the complex heart diseases while children between 5 years to 18 years had 14 (28.6%). The top three complex congenital heart disease were complex Tetralogy of Fallot which was found among 26 (53%) subjects. Tricuspid atresia and Truncus arteriosus were found in 3 children with congenial heart disease each, Shone complex was found in a child, Hypoplastic left heart syndrome was also noted in a child.

The incidence of complex congenital heart diseases among prospective Paediatric cardiac surgery patients is high. Efforts should be made to improve access to preventive cardiology in order to curb these diseases.

Odontogenic cysts develop from the epithelium of dental structures and generally grow slowly. In children and adolescents, cysts usually grow faster than adults and require much knowledge for diagnoses and treatments.

This study aimed to determine the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic cysts in different age groups by evaluating the type of lesions, age, gender, and anatomical distribution of odontogenic cysts seen in children and adolescents by cone-beam computed tomography.

A total of 42 odontogenic cysts (radicular, dentigerous cyst, and odontogenic keratocyst) were determined in children and adolescents aged 7-18 years. Cone-beam computed tomography images of odontogenic cysts were analyzed in terms of types, age, sex, anatomical location, height, width, depth, scalloped borders, lesion shapes, tooth displacement, root resorption, and association with an unerupted tooth.

There was a significant correlation between odontogenic cyst types and age groups, scalloped borders, lesion shape, tooth diution and properties of odontogenic cysts in pediatric patients will help diagnose the lesions during clinical and radiological examinations and make appropriate treatment planning.

Collagen extracted from gourami scales demonstrated an average porosity of 13.779 μm. The FTIR test results indicated Amide A, Amide B, Amide I, Amide II, and Amide III peaks. The degradation rate of extracted collagen from gourami scales was 92.
