Environmental rules and FDI interest: a bibliometric analysis of the materials.
A super-continuum white laser with a half-pulse width of ~75 ps was used to observe the kinetics of a postulated excited-state proton transfer in 8-azaxanthine and its 8-methyl derivative. Both compounds exhibited dual emissions in weakly acidified alcoholic media, but only one band was present in aqueous solutions, exhibiting an abnormal Stokes shift (>12,000 cm-1). It was shown that long-wavelength emissions were delayed relative to the excitation pulse within alcoholic media. The rise time was calculated to be 0.4-0.5 ns in both methanol and deuterated methanol. This is equal to the main component of the fluorescence decay in the short-wavelength band (340 nm). Time-resolved emission spectra (TRES) indicated a two-state photo-transformation model in both compounds. Global analysis of the time dependence revealed three exponential components in each compound, one of which had an identical rise-time, with the second attributed to a long-wavelength band decay (6.4 ns for aza-xanthine and 8.3 ns for its 8-methyl derivative). The origin of the third, intermediate decay time (1.41 ns for aza-xanthine and 0.87 ns for 8-methyl-azaxanthine) is uncertain, but decay-associated spectra (DAS) containing both bands suggest the participation of a contact ion pair. These results confirm the model of phototautomerism proposed earlier, but the question of the anomalous isotope effect remains unsolved.β-adrenergic signaling is known to be involved in cancer progression; in particular, beta3-adrenoreceptor (β3-AR) is associated with different tumor conditions. Currently, there are few data concerning β3-AR in myeloid malignancies. Here, we evaluated β3-AR in myeloid leukemia cell lines and the effect of β3-AR antagonist SR59230A. In addition, we investigated the potential role of β3-AR blockade in doxorubicin resistance. Using flow cytometry, we assessed cell death in different in vitro myeloid leukemia cell lines (K562, KCL22, HEL, HL60) treated with SR59230A in hypoxia and normoxia; furthermore, we analyzed β3-AR expression. We used healthy bone marrow cells (BMCs), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and cord blood as control samples. Finally, we evaluated the effect of SR59230A plus doxorubicin on K562 and K562/DOX cell lines; K562/DOX cells are resistant to doxorubicin and show P-glycoprotein (P-gp) overexpression. We found that SR59230A increased cancer cell lines apoptosis especially in hypoxia, resulting in selective activity for cancer cells; moreover, β3-AR expression was higher in malignancies, particularly under hypoxic condition. Finally, we observed that SR59230A plus doxorubicin increased doxorubicin resistance reversion mainly in hypoxia, probably acting on P-gp. Together, these data point to β3-AR as a new target and β3-AR blockade as a potential approach in myeloid leukemias.This editorial aims to summarize the 14 scientific papers contributed to the Special Issue "Nanotoxicology and nanosafety 2.0 from the point of view of both toxicology and ecotoxicology".Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is a useful technique to characterize layered samples and thin films. It gives access to their optical properties and thickness. Such measurements are done in transmission, which requires access to the sample from opposite sides. In reality this is not always possible. In such cases, reflection measurements are the only option, but they are more difficult to implement. Here we propose a method to characterize films in reflection geometry using a polarimetric approach based on the identification of Brewster angle and modeling of the measured signal to extract the refractive index and thickness of the sample. The technique is demonstrated experimentally on an unsupported single layer thin film sample. The extracted optical properties and thickness were in good agreement with established transmission terahertz spectroscopy measurements. The new method has the potential to cover a wide range of applications, both for research and industrial purposes.The aim of the study is to assess the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the wear behavior of MWCNT-doped epoxy resin. In this study, a laminating resin system designed to meet the standards for motor planes was modified with MWCNTs at mass fractions from 0.0 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%. The properties of the carbon nanotubes were determined in Raman spectroscopy and HR-TEM. An examination of wear behavior was conducted on a linear abraser with a visual inspection on an optical microscope and SEM imaging, mass loss measurement, and evaluation of the wear volume on a profilometer. Moreover, the mechanical properties of MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposite were evaluated through a tensile test and Shore D hardness test. The study shows that the best wear resistance is achieved for the mass percentage between 0.25 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%. For the same range, the tensile strength reaches the highest values and the hardness the lowest values. Together with surface imaging and a topography analysis, this allowed describing the wear behavior in the friction node and the importance of the properties of the epoxy nanocomposite.3D similarity is useful in predicting the profiles of unprecedented molecular frameworks that are 2D dissimilar to known compounds. When comparing pairs of compounds, 3D similarity of the pairs depends on conformational sampling, the alignment method, the chosen descriptors, and the similarity coefficients. In addition to these four factors, 3D chemocentric target prediction of an unknown compound requires compound-target associations, which replace compound-to-compound comparisons with compound-to-target comparisons. In this study, quantitative comparison of query compounds to target classes (one-to-group) was achieved via two types of 3D similarity distributions for the respective target class with parameter optimization for the fitting models (1) maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of queries, and (2) the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) of target classes. While Jaccard-Tanimoto similarity of query-to-ligand pairs with 3D structures (sampled multi-conformers) can be transformed into query distribution using ML estimation, the ligand pair similarity within each target class can be transformed into a representative distribution of a target class through GMM, which is hyperparameterized via the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. To quantify the discriminativeness of a query ligand against target classes, the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) divergence of each query was calculated and compared between targets. 3D similarity-based K-L divergence together with the probability and the feasibility index, (Fm), showed discriminative power with regard to some query-class associations. The K-L divergence of 3D similarity distributions can be an additional method for (1) the rank of the 3D similarity score or (2) the p-value of one 3D similarity distribution to predict the target of unprecedented drug scaffolds.Archers are known to be exposed to the risk of developing various injuries, including less described microvascular damages, which can however heavily affect the performance of athletes. Through videocapillaroscopy, carried out by using a ×200 opti surveillance program of these athletes, in fact this simple, reliable, non-invasive and inexpensive diagnostic tool is able to recognize early signs of microvascular damage and then suggest indications for further investigations and or follow-up.Feline parvovirus (FPV) causes severe gastroenteritis and leukopenia in cats; the outcome is poor. Information regarding specific treatments is lacking. Class A CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG-A) are short single-stranded DNAs, stimulating type I interferon production. In cats, CpG-A induced an antiviral response in vivo and inhibited FPV replication in vitro. The aim was to prospectively investigate the effects of CpG-A on survival, clinical score, hematological findings, antiviral response (cytokines), viremia, and fecal shedding (real-time qPCR) in cats naturally infected with FPV. Forty-two FPV-infected cats were randomized to receive 100 µg/kg of CpG-A (n = 22) or placebo (n = 20) subcutaneously, on admission and after 48 h. Blood and fecal samples were collected on admission, after 1, 3, and 7 days. All 22 cats showed short duration pain during CpG-A injections. The survival rate, clinical score, leukocyte and erythrocyte counts, viremia, and fecal shedding at any time-point did not differ between cats treated with CpG-A (50%) and placebo (40%). Antiviral myxovirus resistance (Mx) gene transcription increased in both groups from day 1 to 3 (p = 0.005). Antibodies against FPV on admission were associated with survival in cats (p = 0.002). In conclusion, CpG-A treatment did not improve the outcome in cats with FPV infection. FPV infection produced an antiviral response.Despite the fact that morbidity and mortality rates due to dengue infection in Indonesia are relatively high, a dengue vaccination has not yet been introduced. Next to vaccination, Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes and health education have been considered to be potential interventions to prevent dengue infection in Indonesia. This study was aimed to analyse the cost-effectiveness of dengue vaccination in Indonesia whilst taking Wolbachia and health education programs into account. An age-structured decision tree model was developed to assess the cost-effectiveness. Approximately 4,701,100 children were followed-up in a 10-year time horizon within a 1-year analytical cycle. We compared three vaccination strategies one focussing on vaccination only, another combining vaccination and a Wolbachia program, and a third scenario combining vaccination and health education. All scenarios were compared with a no-intervention strategy. The result showed that only vaccination would reduce dengue fever (DF), dengue haemorrhation combined with a Wolbachia program was confirmed to be the most cost-effective intervention. Dengue infection rate, vaccine efficacy, cost of Wolbachia program, underreporting factor for hospitalization, vaccine price and mortality rate were considered to be the most influential parameters affecting the ICERs.The emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) causes a major threat to public health due to its limited therapeutic options. There is an urgent need for the development of new effective antimicrobial agents and alternative strategies that are effective against resistant bacteria. The parallel legalization of cannabis and its products has fueled research into its many therapeutic avenues in many countries around the world. This study aimed at the development of a reliable method for the extraction, purification, characterization, and quantification of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and its decarboxylated form cannabidiol (CBD) present in the fiber type Cannabis sativa L. The two compounds were extracted by ethanol, purified on a C18 sep-pack column, and the extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet (UV)-vis and ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) detection. The antimicrobial effect of CBDA and CBD was also evaluated.
