The Under-Appreciated Benefits Of Door Handle Replacement
Door Handle Replacement

Door handles may seem like an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the way they look or find them difficult to use and use, you should consider replacing them. Installing a new door handle is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are equipped with cover plates that hide the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. If your new handle does not already have them attached, you will have to attach them separately.

Remove the old handle

Door handles aren't just an an important aesthetic addition to your home but they're also crucial for safety as they let you lock and unlock your door. As time passes the door handle can start to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It could also begin to look worn out and old. This is a good indication that it's time to replace your door handle.

One of the first indications that your door handle is in need of replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could be a security risk for you and your family.

Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Luckily, it's quite easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

The majority of modern door handles are a standard size and therefore will fit on any door. If you are not certain if your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure its housing holes. This will allow you to buy the right size door handle.

It is the easiest method to remove the old door handle by taking it off from the door. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the screws that mount them. You will need to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. After removing the old handle, take note of the way in which the spindle is connected. This will assist you in aligning the new handle.

Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done using the screwdriver, but you'll need to find the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. After taking off the latch, remove the handle and strike plate. Then remove upvc door handle from the edge of the door.

Remove the Strike Plate

When replacing your handle, you'll also need to replace the latch plate that holds the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The package the new handles are packaged in will have two options for latch plates - either a rectangular or circular (see the above diagram that outlines door handle parts). If you have an old rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier to use.

The first step is to take off the screw that holds the old latch plate. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It may be helpful to have a second person help in this area if it is possible.

After the screws are removed and the latch plate will slide out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate.

You can now move on to making the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with your new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this may damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, shut and open the door to check whether it locks and closes properly. If not then you'll have to adjust the strike plate up or down, or move it forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly.

If the door is jiggling or moving, you may need to increase the size of the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too small, a wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece which slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks in an opening in the door's frame so that the door remains closed. If your door is wobbling when you close, replacing the latch could be all that is needed to correct the issue.

The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot however, you can use a screwdriver to make a small hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it should be easy to remove the latch and the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If the latch won't be released, try using a paper clip or a tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until the handle and latch begin to split. You may have to do this several times before the latch is loose enough to let it out.

Once the old latch is removed, you should be able to move the new latch into the slot with no issues. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use your new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the center of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Also, make sure whether the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with this measurement.

You'll require a brand new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the handle and latch, or your old one is damaged. If you're not replacing the locks, the new latch will fit in your existing recess, and be compatible with your current keys. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match the handles you have.

Remove the cover plate

You can replace your old door handles with a modern lever and rose design to make a difference in the appearance of your home. You can buy complete sets that come with matching escutcheons as well as privacy adaptor kits.

To replace an internal door handle, remove the cover plate (or rose), which protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Look for an opening tab on the plate and employ a flathead screwdriver lift it off the knob. It may have an opening on one side or be held by pins.

Once the cover plate is off take off the screw that holds the inside handle in place and set it aside. It is also necessary to remove the screws that hold the latch and plates, which you can do by loosening them with the help of a Philips screwdriver. Then, remove the inner plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.

Most doors have gaps between the door jamb and the inside edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, but not all have. If yours doesn't have a handle, you'll need to drill a hole in the door to install the new handle. It's the same procedure for opening a locked door however you'll need to be extra careful not to harm the frame or door.

After drilling the holes then you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Buy the same dimensions as your old screws to avoid getting a handle that is too loose or tight. It's also necessary to install a new strike rod and latch plate that aren't included in most door handle sets.
