This provides a reference method for directional antennas applied to 5G millimeter wave bands to increase gain and narrow beams.Knowledge of bioclimatic comfort is paramount for improving people's quality of life. To this purpose, several studies related to climatic comfort/discomfort have been recently published. These studies mainly focus on the analysis of temperature and relative humidity, i.e., the main variables influencing the environmental stress in the human body. In this context, the present work aims to analyze the number of visits to the hospital emergency department made by the inhabitants of the Crati River valley (Calabria region, southern Italy) during the heat waves that accompanied the African anticyclone in the summer of 2017. The analysis of the bioclimatic comfort was performed using the humidity index. Results showed that greater the index, the higher the number of accesses to the emergency department, in particular by the most vulnerable population groups, such as children and the elderly. Two different raltitrexed gold and silver nanoparticles for the delivery of an antitumoral drug into cancer cells were synthesized and characterized. A cysteine linker was used for the covalent bonding of raltitrexed to the surface of nanoparticles. To evaluate the efficacy of the antifolate-derivative nanoparticles, their cytotoxicity was assayed in vitro with A549 human lung adenocarcinoma and HCT-116 colorectal carcinoma human cells. Modified nanoparticles are a biocompatible material, and administration of silver raltitrexed nanoparticles strongly inhibited the viability of the cancer cells; gold raltitrexed nanoparticles do not show any type of cytotoxic effect. The results suggest that silver raltitrexed nanoparticles could be a potential delivery system for certain cancer cells.Thrombosis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. As such, it also occurs as one of the major complications in hemolytic diseases, like hemolytic uremic syndrome, hemorrhage and sickle cell disease. Under these conditions, red blood cell lysis finally leads to the release of large amounts of labile heme into the vascular compartment. This, in turn, can trigger oxidative stress and proinflammatory reactions. Moreover, the heme-induced activation of the blood coagulation system was suggested as a mechanism for the initiation of thrombotic events under hemolytic conditions. Studies of heme infusion and subsequent thrombotic reactions support this assumption. Furthermore, several direct effects of heme on different cellular and protein components of the blood coagulation system were reported. However, these effects are controversially discussed or not yet fully understood. This review summarizes the existing reports on heme and its interference in coagulation processes, emphasizing the relevance of considering heme in the context of the treatment of thrombosis in patients with hemolytic disorders. The binding of known odorant molecules to the human odorant-binding protein (hOBP) was evaluated in silico. Docking experiments elucidate the preferable binding site and binding affinity of odorant molecules to hOBP. The physicochemical properties molecular weight (MW), vapor pressure (Vp), hydrophobicity level (logP), number of double bonds (NºDB), degree of unsaturation (DoU) and the chemical classification, were selected for the study of odorant modulation. Here, these properties were analyzed concerning 30 pleasant and 30 unpleasant odorants, chosen to represent a wide variety of compounds and to determine their influence on the binding energy to hOBP. Our findings indicate that MW, logP and Vp are the most important odorant variables, directly correlated to odorant-binding energies (DGbinding) towards hOBP. Understanding how the odorants behave when complexed with the OBP in human olfaction opens new possibilities for the development of future biotechnological applications, including sensory devices, medical diagnosis, among others. This paper presents the results of a study of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films irradiated with Ar and Kr ions at both normal orientation and an angle of 40° to the normal. Normal irradiation was performed using Ar8+ and Kr15+ ions with an energy of 1.75 MeV/au and fluences in the range (2-500) × 1010 cm-2 for Ar8+ ions and (1.6 - 6.5) × 1010 cm-2 for Kr15+ ions. Kr ions with an energy of 1.2 MeV/au and charges of 13+, 14+, and 15+ were used for angled irradiation. For each Kr ion charge value, three fluence values were used 5 × 1010, 1 × 1011, and 2.5 × 1011 cm-2. It is well known that irradiation of PET films by swift heavy ions results in a red shift of the UV-vis transmission spectra absorption edge. The experimental transmission spectra exhibit well-defined interference fringes, which obscure the underlying transmission response. Using an existing technique to obtain interference-free transmission curves Tα(λ) for both pristine and irradiated PET film samples, we found that S, the total radiation-induced absorption of light by the PET film, is proportional to the logarithm of the fluence F. In addition to this dependence on the irradiating fluence, we also found that the charge of the irradiating ion has a significant influence on the position of the absorption edge in the UV-vis spectra. This provides experimentally independent evidence to confirm our previous results showing that ion charge has an effect on the post-irradiation state of PET films. We present a physical interpretation of the observed absorption edge red shift in irradiated PET films as being due to the growth of extended conjugated systems via the formation of intermolecular helical structures. Our investigations into the stability of irradiation-induced effects in PET films show that comparison of UV-vis transmission spectra before and after annealing can provide information about the structure of deep traps in PET.Applications of metal oxide nanoparticles in the agriculture sector are being extensively included as the materials are considered superior. In the present work, zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO NPs), with a developing fertilizer, is applied in the fortification of rice grain yield and nutrient uptake enhancement. learn more To evaluate the role of ZnO NP, two field experiments were conducted during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. ZnO NPs were small, nearly spherical, and their sizes equal to 31.4 nm, as proved via the dynamic light scattering technique. ZnO NPs were applied as a fertilizer in different concentrations, varying between 20 and 60 mg/L as a foliar spray. The mixture of ZnSO4 and ZnO NP40 ameliorated yield component and nutrients (N, K, and Zn) uptake was enhanced compared to traditional ZnSO4 treatment. Nevertheless, the uptake of the phosphorous element (P) was adversely affected by the treatment of ZnO NPs. Thus, treatment via utilizing ZnO NPs as a foliar with a very small amount (40 ppm) with of basal ZnSO4 led to a good improvement in agronomic and physiological features; eventually, higher yield and nutrient-enriched rice grain were obtained.Inherited optic neuropathies, including Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and Dominant Optic Atrophy (DOA), are monogenetic diseases with a final common pathway of mitochondrial dysfunction leading to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death and ultimately loss of vision. They are, therefore, excellent models with which to investigate this ubiquitous disease process-implicated in both common polygenetic ocular diseases (e.g., Glaucoma) and late-onset central nervous system neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson disease). In recent years, cellular and animal models of LHON and DOA have matured in parallel with techniques (such as RNA-seq) to determine and analyze the transcriptomes of affected cells. This confluence leaves us at a particularly exciting time with the potential for the identification of novel pathogenic players and therapeutic targets. Here, we present a discussion of the importance of inherited optic neuropathies and how transcriptomic techniques can be exploited in the development of novel mutation-independent, neuroprotective therapies. In this article, we examine the possibility of using active infrared thermography as a nontraditional, nondestructive evaluation method (NDE) for the testing of adhesive joints. Attention was focused on the load-bearing wing structure and related structural joints, specifically the adhesive joints of the wing spar caps and the skins on the wing demonstrator of a small sport aircraft made mainly of a carbon composite. The Pulse Thermography (PT) method, using flash lamps for optical excitation, was tested. The Modified Differential Absolute Contrast (MDAC) method was used to process the measured data to reduce the effect of the heat source's inhomogeneity and surface emissivity. This method demonstrated a very high ability to detect defects in the adhesive joints. The achieved results are easy to interpret and use for both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the adhesive joints of thin composite parts.Anemia is a common feature of liver and bowel diseases. Although the main causes of anemia in these conditions are represented by gastrointestinal bleeding and iron deficiency, autoimmune hemolytic anemia should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Due to the epidemiological association, autoimmune hemolytic anemia should particularly be suspected in patients affected by inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune or acute viral hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. In the presence of biochemical indices of hemolysis, the direct antiglobulin test can detect the presence of warm or cold reacting antibodies, allowing for a prompt treatment. Drug-induced, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia should be ruled out. On the other hand, the choice of treatment should consider possible adverse events related to the underlying conditions. Given the adverse impact of anemia on clinical outcomes, maintaining a high clinical suspicion to reach a prompt diagnosis is the key to establishing an adequate treatment. The application of reinforced concrete for permanent and temporary deep ocean structures has recently become more prevalent; however, the static and dynamic effects of high water pressure on concrete remain unexplored. This paper investigates the influence of high water pressure (60 MPa) on four series of concrete cylinders with and without an embedded steel bar under sustained and cyclic loading conditions. The residual compressive strength, bond strength, and associated evolution of surface and internal damage are evaluated after exposing concrete cylinders to a water pressure of 60 MPa. The first series is exposed to sustained water pressure for 7 and 60 days, while the other series is tested under repeated water pressure for 10, 20, 30, 60, and 150 cycles. The results reveal that residual compressive strength falls immediately by 16% within 7 days of sustained high water pressure, but the strength then remains stable up to 60 days. Under repeated high water pressure, residual compressive strength gradually reduces by up to 40% until 60 cycles, after which it remains reasonably stable until 150 cycles as crack propagation is arrested at a certain depth within the concrete cylinders. The bond strength between the steel bar and matrix is observed to decrease considerably under repeated cycles of 60 MPa water pressure up to 26%. The damage gradually propagates at the matrix/steel bar interface under the repeated water pressure, resulting in a reduction in residual pullout capacity.
