The abundance and diversity of microbiota were found to be improved in broilers that were supplemented with GML, using operational taxonomic unit and diversity analyses. We investigated the capacity of male Ross 308 broilers to deal with increasing levels of bulk and aimed to identify a feed bulk dimension responsible for limiting feed intake (FI). About 528 day-old broilers were allocated to 48 pens and offered a common starter feed until day 8, and 1 of 7 feeds from day 8 to 36 of age a basal control (B), which was diluted to 3 levels (15, 30, or 45%) with either oat hulls (OH) or sugar beet pulp (SBP). Feed intake was measured daily and birds were dissected for GIT measurements at day 15, 22, and 36. Feed intake increased in birds offered OH15 (135 g/d), OH30 (140 g/d), and SBP15 (138 g/d) compared with birds offered the B feed (106 g/d; SEM 2.4). By increasing FI, birds were able to compensate for the lower energy content of their feeds. The greatest increase in FI was seen on OH30 its energy content (2,273 kcal/kg) was 26% lower than the B feed (3,081 kcal/kg). There was evidence of adaptation on the bulky feeds, as during the last week only birds on SBP45 were limited in FI and performance. The relative weights of the GIT were greater in the SBP than OH series, suggesting that the former needed to accommodate a higher bulk intake. For the OH series the increase in the relative GIT weights was confined to the gizzard and small intestine; whereas for the SBP series, the increase was extended to proventriculus and large intestine. Because only SBP45 was limiting FI, we were unable to identify a bulk dimension to be used to predict FI. Our data reject the suggestion that modern broilers have a reduced ability to cope with reductions in feed energy content.Ammonia (NH3) at a high concentration has been recognized as a highly poisonous pollutant affecting both air and water quality. NH3, as a stimulus, exerts negative impact on broiler growth and production, but the molecular mechanisms are not clear yet. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Bupleurum falcatum L saikosaponins (SP) on the growth and ileum health status in broilers exposed to NH3. Day-old Arbor Acers broilers (n = 480) were randomly allocated into 1 of 4 treatments. The main factors were dietary SP supplementation (0 or 80 mg/kg of diet) and NH3 challenge (with or without 70 ± 5 ppm NH3). The data of growth, intestinal morphology, and mRNA expression related to ileal function were collected from broilers exposed to NH3 for 7 d. Results showed that NH3 remarkably suppressed growth performance and intestinal development as well as induced biological injuries in the ileum of broilers, resulting from oxidative stress, mucous barrier damage, and immune dysfunction as well as upregulated apoptosis. These negative effects of NH3 were alleviated by the SP supplement. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of SP may be helpful in alleviating the detrimental effects of NH3 on the ileum development in broilers.
This study examined the perspectives of female patients who had been sexually assaulted regarding the quality of care provided by sexual assault nurse examiners, including whether the patients' perspectives varied by their demographic characteristics and health status before the assault.
A total of 695 female patients who received care from sexual assault nurse examiners at 13United States emergency care centers and community-based programs completed standardized surveys 1week after receiving sexual assault nurse examiners' care for sexual assault.
Most patients strongly agreed that the sexual assault nurse examiners provided high-quality care, including taking patients' needs/concerns seriously, not acting as though the assault was the patient's fault, showing care/compassion, explaining the sexual assault examination, and providing follow-up information. The perceptions did not vary by the patients' demographic characteristics or preassault health status.

We aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of children in whom the aortic valve could be repaired without the use of patch material. We hypothesized that if the aortic valve is of sufficiently good quality to perform repair without patches, a durable repair could be achieved.
All children (n=102) who underwent aortic valve repair without the use of a patch between 1980 and 2016 were reviewed.
The median patient age at operation was 2years (interquartile range, 1month to 9.6years). There were 25 neonates and 17 infants. There was no operative mortality. Mean overall survival at 10years was 97.7%±0.01% (95% confidence interval, [CI] 91.0%-99.4%). Forty-three patients (42.2%) required 56 aortic valve reoperations, including 24 redo aortic valve repairs, 22 Ross procedures, 8 mechanical aortic valve replacements, and 2 homograft aortic valve replacements. Non-small cell lung cancers with a ground-glass opacity component have better prognosis than those with solid nodules of equivalent consolidation size. However, the impact of small ground-glass opacity components on prognosis is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the significance of a small ground-glass opacity component in solid-dominant clinical stage IA non-small cell lung cancers.
We reviewed the cases of 543 surgically resected solid-dominant c-stage IA non-small cell lung cancers, which was defined as a tumor with consolidation tumor ratio of 0.75 or more on computed tomography. The patients were classified into 2 groups 0.75 or less consolidation tumor ratio less than 1 (n=126) and consolidation tumor ratio of 1 (n=417). The prognoses were compared between the 2 groups.

Exposure-based psychotherapy is a first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but its mechanisms are poorly understood. Functional brain connectivity is a promising metric for identifying treatment mechanisms and biosignatures of therapeutic response. To this end, we assessed amygdala and insula treatment-related connectivity changes and their relationship to PTSD symptom improvements.
Individuals with a primary PTSD diagnosis (N= 66) participated in a randomized clinical trial of prolonged exposure therapy (n= 36) versus treatment waiting list (n= 30). Task-free functional magnetic resonance imaging was completed prior to randomization and 1 month following cessation of treatment/waiting list. Whole-brain blood oxygenation level-dependent responses were acquired. Striatal astrocytes contribute to circuit neuromodulation by controlling the activity of ambient neurotransmitters. In particular, extracellular glutamate levels are tightly controlled by the astrocytic glutamate transporter EAAT2, influencing synaptic functioning and neural network activity. However, it remains unclear if EAAT2 responds to environmental cues to specifically shape action control.
To investigate the relationship between behavioral flexibility and experience-dependent regulation of EAAT2 expression in the dorsal striatum, mice were trained on an instrumental task. We manipulated EAAT2 expression using chemogenetic activation of astrocytic Gq signaling or invivo morpholinos and determined the ability to adapt to novel environmental contingencies.
The loss of behavioral flexibility with task overtraining is associated with the upregulation of EAAT2, which results in enhanced glutamate clearance and altered modulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission in the lateral part of the dorsal striatum. Interfering with EAAT2 upregulation in this striatal area preserves behavioral flexibility.
