The Life of a Blue Heron Nest
If you spend time on the shores of lakes, tidal marshes or trout streams, you have likely noticed a great blue heron standing sentinel in the shallow water. These large birds, which can weigh up to four pounds and have wingspan of nearly seven feet, are a majestic sight.

In the spring, mating pairs begin to form. A male heron will often fly with his head down and neck extended to signal that he wants to mate. Once a female heron accepts the courtship, the pair will work together to build a nest from sticks and other materials. 1 lạng yến thô bao nhiêu tiền take turns incubating the eggs and defending the nest against predators. Once the eggs hatch, it is common for the largest chick to push its siblings out of the nest. By eight weeks the young herons are ready to fledge.

After the herons fledge, they may join other adult herons in a colony where the group hunts and shares food. These groups are called rookeries, and they can have hundreds of individual nests in a treetop. The herons in a rookery are very protective of one another. They will even chase off other herons that come too close to the nests.

This year, the CCB is hoping to increase our understanding of how heron colonies work by collecting data on nest locations and numbers and by monitoring the health of herons. The data we gather is important to help us manage heron populations and their habitats for the benefit of all wildlife.

While herons are doing well in our area, they are still vulnerable to many of the same challenges that humans face. Herons are sensitive to disturbance around their nests and can abandon their eggs or young if the habitat where they breed is disturbed. The pollution of wetlands, lakes and rivers also threatens herons by killing the fish that they eat.

When you see herons, pay attention to where they are going. If they are flying low and slowly toward water, they are most likely heading to a marsh or creek to search for prey. If they swoop down with their necks extended and wings back, it's a hunt in progress. And if they are coughing up their morning catch and calling to their siblings with a deep, throaty "fraakkk," they are passing the parental duties off. You can support our efforts to protect herons and their habitat by donating today. You can also do your part by avoiding heron colonies during the nesting season and protecting the habitat in which they breed. If you own property near a heron colony, we encourage you to protect it by not using it for human activities from March to August. And when you see herons on your property, keep a safe distance of 300-600 feet. That will ensure that herons and humans can co-exist peacefully.
