The Blue Jay Nest
Blue jays get a bad rap as obnoxious menaces, but bird experts argue they’re no-nonsense smarty-pants. Their screeches warning of predators sound the natural alarm system, and their industrious behavior, stashing food for later, helps to ensure forests thrive. They even play a key role in minimizing agricultural pests.

In 1 lạng yến được bao nhiêu tổ , Blue Jays typically live in mixed deciduous and coniferous woods but can also nest atop buildings, utility poles, and even window sills. After courtship, a male and female select a tree to begin building their bulky cup-shaped nest. Twigs, bark, leaves, roots, moss, grass, and mud are used in the nest, usually located between 8 to 30 feet above ground.

The female does more nest-building than the male, but both gather materials and fly long distances for them. Twigs from living trees are preferred, but rootlets gathered from recently dug ditches or cemeteries also make excellent nest material. A stout outer layer is held together by a thick interior of mud, sticks, and sometimes hair, fur, or feathers. Often the nest is bluish, although a range of colors are used.

Once the eggs hatch, the mother sits on the nest and keeps the naked chicks warm until they’re able to thermoregulate. During this time, the father forages for food to bring home. As the young grow, the mother spends less and less time on the nest. Eventually, both parents take turns foraging and feeding.

When a potential predator, such as a Barred Owl or Domestic Cat, enters the nesting territory, the Blue Jay lets out an alarmed call that attracts other birds in the area. They then form a group called a mob, which dives at the predator.

Like other songbirds, Blue Jays practice “courtship feeding” during the breeding season. A male and female mate will both hawk for food, then return to the female’s nest where they display the begging posture. The male then feeds the female from a perch nearby. Once the eggs hatch, the male may also assume incubating duties.

Once the young have grown their flight feathers and are able to thermoregulate on their own, the mother and male both start to forage more and more for food for the family. In addition, the pair may form a group with similarly-aged jays to share foraging and nesting activities.

In general, Blue Jays are monogamous and will remain with the same partner for life. However, if the mate dies, the remaining blue jay will quickly find another mate.

The Blue Jay’s range is projected to expand as climate change continues, but it faces many of the same threats that all other species do. Audubon’s scientists have used 140 million bird observations and sophisticated climate models to study how the range of the Blue Jay will shift as temperatures rise.
