Due to its high wear resistance and good biocompatibility, zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) is an ideal material used as load-bearing implant. However, ZTA needs to be modified to overcome its bio-inert and thus improve osseointegration. Cerium oxide, which has been proved to be a bone-friendly ceramic, might be a desired material to enhance the bioactivity of ZTA. In this study, ZTA and cerium oxide doped ZTA (ZTAC) were prepared via sintering method. The in vitro study showed that the addition of cerium oxide promoted MC3T3-E1 cell adhesion and spreading through upregulating ITG α5 and ITG β1. In addition, the incorporation of cerium oxide enhanced cell proliferation, ALP activity, and ECM mineralization capacity. Moreover, the incorporation of cerium oxide promoted the expressions of osteogenesis related genes, such as ALP, Col-I, and OCN. The in vivo implantation test via a SD rat model showed that the incorporation of cerium oxide promoted new bone formation and bone-implant integration. In summary, this study provided a new strategy to fabricate bioactive ZTA implant for potential application in orthopedics field.
We present a case of retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy and review the usefulness of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in the assessment of long-term outcomes.

A 31-year-old woman developed sudden-onset scotoma in her right eye. Fundus examination and fluorescein angiography showed a patch of soft exudate and capillary nonperfusion in the posterior pole and outside the vascular arcades. OCT-A revealed that the initial vessel density (VD) of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) of the right eye were 32% and 49.2%, respectively. Interestingly, over time, the VD of the SCP and DCP gradually decreased to 23.1% and 26.2%, respectively. In contrast, the initial VD of the SCP and DCP of the left eye were both stable at 44.3% and 56.2%, respectively, and only decreased slightly to 39.3% and 45.7%, respectively, over time. The average VD loss of the SCP and DCP, assessed over 1 year, was 8% and 13%, respectively, in the right eye, and 3% and 6%, respectively, in the left eye.

Based on this case report, in which we demonstrated a long-term decline in VD of the macula in a young woman with mild retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy, we suggest that there is a potential and valuable role for OCT-A in this rare disease.

The effect of the Colombian armed conflict on the mental health of adolescents is still poorly understood.

Given social interventions are most likely to inform policy, we tested whether two potential intervention targets, family functioning and social capital, were associated with mental health in Colombian adolescents, and whether this was moderated by experience of violence and displacement.

We examined the cross-sectional association between family functioning, cognitive social capital, structural social capital and 12-month prevalence of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) diagnosed psychiatric disorder, using data on 12 to 17-year-old adolescents (
= 1,754) from the 2015 National Mental Health Survey of Colombia, a nationally representative epidemiological study. We tested whether associations survived cumulative adjustment for demographic confounders, experience of non-specific violence and harm and displacement by armed conflict.

Neither structural nor cognitive social capital were associated with better mental health. Better family functioning was associated with reduced risk of poor mental health in an unadjusted analysis (OR 0.90 [0.85-0.96]), and after cumulative adjustments for demographic confounders (OR 0.91 [0.86-0.97]), non-specific violence and harm (OR 0.91 [0.86-0.97]) and social capital variables (OR 0.91 [0.85-0.97]). In the final model, each additional point on the family APGAR scale was associated with a 9% reduced odds of any CIDI diagnosed disorder in the last 12 months.

Better family functioning was associated with better mental health outcomes for all adolescents. This effect remained present in those affected by the armed conflict even after accounting for potential confounders.

This study investigated post-mortem atrophy of the locus coeruleus (LC) in sEOAD and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Levels of LC atrophy, as estimated by pathologist-rating of hypopigmentation, were compared between sEOAD (n = 115) and LOAD (n = 672) participants while controlling for other measures of pathological progression. Subsequent analyses compared low vs. high LC atrophy sEOAD subgroups on neuropsychological test performance. Results show nearly 4 times greater likelihood of higher LC atrophy in sEOAD as compared to LOAD (p less then .005). sEOAD participants with greater LC atrophy displayed significantly worse performance on various baseline measures of attentional functioning (p less then .05), despite similar global cognition (p = .25). These findings suggest the LC is an important potential driver of clinical and pathological heterogeneity in sEOAD.
Quantification of viral antigens and viral loads in human milk samples from mothers infected with hepatitis B virus is largely unknown.

The aim of the study was to quantitatively measure the levels of viral antigens and deoxyribonucleic acid of hepatitis B virus in human milk from mothers infected with hepatitis B virus.

Fifty-five pairs of milk and serum samples from mothers with positive hepatitis B surface antigen, including 11 hepatitis B e antigen positive, were quantitatively tested to measure viral antigens by microparticle enzyme immunoassay and viral loads by real-time polymerase chain reaction assay.

The median level of hepatitis B surface antigen in the human milk samples of mothers with positive or negative hepatitis B e antigen was each lower than that in the sera, respectively (1.10 vs. 4.32 log
IU/ml,
= 10.693,
< .001; -0.77 vs. 2.53 log
IU/ml,
= -25.135,
< .001). The titers of hepatitis B surface antigen or hepatitis B e antigen in the human milk samples were each correlated with that in maternal serum. The detectable level of deoxyribonucleic acid of hepatitis B virus in human milk ranged from 1.42-5.27 log
IU/ml, whereas that in maternal sera was 1.44-8.66 log
IU/ml. The viral level in human milk was not correlated with that in maternal circulation.

The present study data illustrate the relatively low titers of viral markers in the milk of mothers with positive hepatitis B surface antigen.

We aimed to determine whether the percentage of circulating fibrocytes could be predictive of severity and prognosis during Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Blood fibrocytes were quantified by flow cytometry as CD45+/CD15-/CD34+/Collagen-1+cells in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia. MLN7243 clinical trial In a subgroup of patients admitted in ICU, fibrocytes were quantified in blood and broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL). Serum amyloid P (SAP), TGF-b1,CXCL12, CCL2, and FGF2 serum concentration were measured in serum. We included 57 patients in the Hospitalized group (median age 59 years [23-87]) and 16 Healthy controls. The median percentage of circulating fibrocytes was higher in patients compared to controls (3.6% [0.2-9.2] vs. 2.1% [0.9-5.1], p=0.04). Blood fibrocyte count was lower in the 6 patients who died compared to survivors (1.6% [0.2-4.4] vs. 3.7% [0.6-9.2], p=0.02). Initial fibrocyte count was higher in patients showing a complete lung CT resolution at 3 months. Circulating fibrocyte count was decreased in the ICU group (0.8% [0.1-2.0]) whereas BAL fibrocyte count was 6.7% [2.2-15.4]. Serum SAP and TGF-b1 concentrations were increased in Hospitalized patients. SAP was also increased in ICU patients. CXCL12 and CCL2 were increased in ICU patients, and negatively correlated with circulating fibrocyte count. We conclude that circulating fibrocytes were increased in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia and a lower fibrocyte count was associated with an increased risk of death and a slower resolution of lung CT opacities. We report sterile peri-graft abscess formation following an ascending aortic and hemiarch replacement for acute type A aortic dissection, possibly caused as a reaction to BioGlue®. The patient was successfully treated by drainage, cleaning, removal of BioGlue® remnants, three sessions of negative-pressure wound dressing, and secondary chest closure.
A predominant notion among researchers is that hospital room design and decor are subject to the designer's expression of self, which is contrary to evidence-based studies showing that design and decor can impact patient health. The aim of this study was to examine whether improvement in quality of healthcare provided in hospitals could be achieved through the convergence of expertise of healthcare professionals and hospital room designers.

This was a prospective study to identify the impact of hospital interior design features with a focus on single occupancy rooms. Volunteers were recruited through advertisements and the study was conducted at the Tripoli Medical Center. Responses were analyzed using a three-dimensional computer-aided design software to help respondents accurately map their preferences and visualize outcomes.

Participants preferred an aesthetically pleasing hospital room environment that included art and bright colors, window views, and the need for personalization, technology, mobility, and flexibility, all of which improved satisfaction and happiness. Of these, participants' preference for technology as a cause for satisfaction and happiness was a novel finding.

Designers of hospital room interiors should plan and create an appealing single occupancy room for increasing user satisfaction and patient wellness.

However, duodenal necrosis and bleeding caused by gallbladder stone compression is relatively rare. The present report describes a patient with repeated hematemesis and melena that relapsed after several symptomatic treatments. The patient and his family elected surgical treatment. Intraoperative examination revealed necrosis of the duodenal bulb with hemorrhage, which was related to compression of the gallbladder neck. Because the imaging manifestations of this disease lack specificity, early diagnosis is difficult.
