The Barred Owl Nest
Barred owls breed once a year, usually around their second "hatchday." They can sometimes start breeding as early as one year old. However, the first broods are often not successful and young birds may die of starvation or injury before they learn to hunt.

Females are dominant in breeding pairs. They incubate eggs and raise young, but males help at the nest. Both parents feed the young. Young owlets start to fly around 6 to 7 weeks after hatching. Owls are very opportunistic hunters, feeding on a variety of small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crayfish and insects. They will also prey on winged creatures such as bats and birds (cardinals, grackles, woodpeckers, and flickers).

In the wild, barred owls prefer forests with an abundance of large trees for nesting. They can also be found in urban areas, swamps, oak savannas and marshes, as well as open woodlands adjacent to fields that provide prey.

Retain and plant hedgerows and thickets, and avoid excessive mowing of grasslands to attract the small mammals that owls favor.
