How Does a Bird Build a Nest?
Birds use a wide variety of nesting materials to construct the homes in which they lay eggs and raise young. These nests can be elaborate woven structures, simple scrapes on the ground, or burrows underground. The type of nest that a bird builds depends on its species, the habitat where it lives, and its specific breeding needs.

Providing nesting materials can be an effective way to help birds during the breeding season. It is best to make the materials available in places where the birds naturally find them – e.g., natural hollows in trees and shrubs, bare branches, grasses, mud-dots on the ground, or on rocky ledges. Lining natural hollows with these materials can also be an attractive way to attract birds to the nesting area.

The most important material for a nest is a fine material that can be woven together to form a secure and comfortable nest. This is usually some type of plant fluff, down, or hair from other animals. Animal hair and fur are used for warmth in winter, while plant fibers provide strength and support. Other important materials include twigs, bark strips, lichens, and mosses. In some cases, bird’s saliva may serve as a kind of glue to strengthen the twigs and other materials in a nest.

Some birds build flat nests made of twigs that are arranged and bound together by spider webs or a sticky mix of mud and saliva. These nests are often seen in the fork of tree branches. Other birds create cup shaped nests that are constructed from twigs and grass stems. The edges of the twigs are woven together with plant fluff, feathers, and other animal hair or down. Many different types of birds, including flycatchers, chats, warblers, larks, and thrushes build these types of nests.

In yến viên to the twigs and other material mentioned above, birds will sometimes use a thin layer of shredded leaves for insulation. They will also add a bit of hay, straw, or other organic material to soften the nest. Finally, some birds will use the lining of a previous year’s nest to save time and effort. However, the birds will typically remove most, or perhaps even all of the lining from an old nest before using it in the current year. This is thought to be done to clear the nest of parasites that may have accumulated during the previous breeding season.

Although a variety of items are used to construct bird nests, some materials pose risks to birds or their chicks. To be safe, it is best to only offer raw material that birds would naturally gather themselves. Dryer lint, for example, is not a good material to offer, since it can contain dangerous chemicals and holes can form when it dries. Other good materials to offer are twigs, sticks, dried grass clippings, pine needles, hay that has not been treated with pesticides, and cattail fluff. Some of these materials can be stored in a container to keep them from disintegrating over the winter months.
