Overall prevalence rates and those of the subgroups were calculated and compared. The 2017 data indicated that overall 23.7% of Mississippi public schools students met the criterion of class I obesity, 9.1% met the criterion of class II obesity, and 3.2% met the criterion of class III obesity. Among those with severe obesity, the prevalence was significantly higher among black students (10.9%) when compared to their white counterparts (7.3%) (p less then 0.001), and among high school students (12.0%) when compared to elementary (6.5%) and middle school students (9.6%) (p less then 0.001). We designed an online platform that allows stakeholders to use their country-specific data (demographic, epidemiological, and cancer screening information) to quantify future harms and benefits of different cancer screening scenarios in their country. Current cancer screening programmes and impacts of potential changes in screening protocols (such as extending target ages or increasing screening attendance) can be simulated. Results are scaled to the country-specific population. To illustrate the tool, we used the tool to simulate two different CRC screening scenarios in the Netherlands biennial fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) in ages 55-75 and colonoscopy every ten years in ages 55-75. Data from the Dutch screening programme was used to inform both scenarios.

A total of 482,700 CRC cases and 178,000 CRC deaths were estimated in the Netherlands with FIT screening (for individuals aged 40-100years, 2018-2050), with 47.3 million FITs performed (1.92 million positives of which 1.64 million adhered to diagnostic colonoscopy). With colonoscopy screening, CRC incidence and mortality were, respectively, up to 17% and 14% lower than in the current FIT screening programme, requiring, however, a colonoscopy demand that was 7-fold higher.

To review the scientific literature seeking lessons for the COVID-19 era that could be learned from previous health services interruptions that affected the delivery of cancer screening services.

A systematic search was conducted up to April 17, 2020, with no restrictions on language or dates and resulted in 385 articles. Two researchers independently assessed the list and discussed any disagreements. Once a consensus was achieved for each paper, those selected were included in the review.

Eleven articles were included. Three studies were based in Japan, two in the United States, one in South Korea, one in Denmark, and the remaining four offered a global perspective on interruptions in health services due to natural or human-caused disasters. No articles covered an interruption due to a pandemic. The main themes identified in the reviewed studies were coordination, communication, resource availability and patient follow-up.

Lessons learned applied to the context of COVID-19 are that coordination involncer screening, measures taken to mitigate it and safely re-establish screening services is recommended. Use of mobile health systems to reach patients who are not accessing services and the application of resource-stratified guidelines are important considerations. More research is needed to explore best strategies for suspending, resuming and sustaining cancer screening programs, and preparedness for future disruptions, adapted to diverse health care systems.Ultrafast optical switch based on plasmonic nanostructures has large application potentials in optical logic circuits and optical communication systems. Here, the incorporation of plasmonic optical switch devices onto the end facets of optical fibers is reported, so that the switched optical signals are generated by interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and plasmonic nanostructures on one end of the fiber, and are delivered via the fiber waveguide to the other end for detection or decoding. "Quenching" of localized surface plasmon in the gold nanowires by its interaction with band-edge modulation in gold through strong optical excitation is the responsible photophysics. In this paper, a 3D alveolar barrier model fabricated by printing four human alveolar cell lines, namely, type I and II alveolar cells (NCI-H1703 and NCI-H441), lung fibroblasts (MRC5), and lung microvascular endothelial cells (HULEC-5a) is presented. Automated high-resolution deposition of alveolar cells by drop-on-demand inkjet printing enables to fabricate a three-layered alveolar barrier model with an unprecedented thickness of ≈10 µm. The results show that the 3D structured model better recapitulate the structure, morphologies, and functions of the lung tissue, compared not only to a conventional 2D cell culture model, as expected, but also a 3D non-structured model of a homogeneous mixture of the alveolar cells and collagen. Finally, it is demonstrated that this thin multilayered model reproduce practical tissue-level responses to influenza infection.
