This in vitro study analysed potential of early proximal caries detection using 3D range data of teeth consisting of near-infrared reflection images at 850nm (NIRR).
Two hundred fifty healthy and carious permanent human teeth were arranged pairwise, examined with bitewing radiography (BWR) and NIRR and validated with micro-computed tomography. NIRR findings were evaluated from buccal, lingual and occlusal (trilateral) views according to yes/no decisions about presence of caries. Reliability assessments included kappa statistics and revealed high agreement for both methods. Statistical analysis included cross tabulation and calculation of sensitivity, specificity and AUC.
Underestimation of caries was 24.8% for NIRR and 26.4% for BWR. Overestimation was 10.4% for occlusal NIRR and 0% for BWR. Trilateral NIRR had overall accuracy of 64.8%, overestimation of 15.6% and underestimation of 19.6%. NIRR and BWR showed high specificity and low sensitivity for proximal caries detection.
NIRR achieved diagnostic results comparable to BWR. Trilateral NIRR assessments overestimated presence of proximal caries, revealing stronger sensitivity for initial caries detection than BWR.
NIRR provided valid complement to BWR as diagnostic instrument. Investigation from multiple angles did not substantially improve proximal caries detection with NIRR.

Sarcoidosis bone involvement of the sacral or iliac bones has been reported to mimic SpA. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of structural sacroiliitis and structural changes of the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) in patients with sarcoidosis by abdominal-pelvic computed tomography (AP-CT). In this monocentric retrospective study, three blinded readers evaluated AP-CT that had already been performed on patients with sarcoidosis and classified them as normal, degenerative, or inflammatory. A consensus was reached for the divergent cases. Erosion, ankylosis, and sclerosis, classically associated with sacroiliitis, were noted. SpA was defined according to the ASAS 2009 classification criteria. We identified 217 patients with proven sarcoidosis who underwent AP-CT. Only three patients had sacroiliitis by CT and four had SpA, representing 1.38% and 1.85% of the patients, respectively. Degenerative SIJs represented 28.1% of patients and were significantly associated with age, at least one pregnancy, rural lifestyle, ankylosis, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, sclerosis, and the presence of osteophytes. Four patients had axial bone sarcoidosis. Sacroiliitis, SpA, and degenerative changes of the SIJ have been highlighted by AP-CT in patients with sarcoidosis. Osteoarthritis of the SIJ in sarcoidosis was associated with age, pregnancy, and rural lifestyle. Further studies are needed to assess the link between SpA and sarcoidosis.This HR-pQCT study was conducted to examine bone properties of the distal tibia post-stroke and to identify clinical outcomes that were associated with these properties at this site. It was found that spasticity and gait speed were independently associated with estimated failure load in individuals with chronic stroke.

Sixty-four people with stroke (age, 60.8 ± 7.7years; time since stroke, 5.7 ± 3.9years) and 64 controls (age 59.4 ± 7.8years) participated in this study. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) was used to scan the bilateral distal tibia, and estimated failure load was calculated by automated finite element analysis. Echo intensity of the medial gastrocnemius muscle and blood flow of the popliteal artery were assessed with ultrasound. As treatment programs focusing on these potentially modifiable stroke-related impairments are feasible to administer, future studies are needed to determine the efficacy of such intervention strategies for improving bone strength in individuals with chronic stroke.

We recently introduced voxel-level images of drug occupancy from PET via our "Lassen plot filter." Occupancy images revealed clear dependence of
C-flumazenil displacement on dose of GABAa inhibitor, CVL-865, but with different scales in different brain regions. We hypothesized that regions requiring higher drug concentrations to achieve desired occupancy would have higher EC
values. We introduce an "EC
image" from human data to evaluate this hypothesis.
Five healthy subjects were scanned with the nonselective GABAa tracer,
C-flumazenil, before and (twice) after administration of CVL-865. We created ten occupancy images and applied an E
model locally to create one EC
image. We also performed simulations to confirm our observations of regional variation in EC
and to identify the main source of variability in EC
.
As expected, the EC
image revealed spatial variation in apparent drug affinity. High EC
was found in areas of low occupancy for a given drug dose. Simulations demonstrated that sampling from an inadequate range of plasma drug concentrations could impair precision.

While water stress limits agricultural production worldwide, endophytic fungi can play a beneficial role for plants, such as tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of inoculation of the endophytic fungi Paraconiothyrium estuarinum (CML 3695, CML 3696, CML 3699) and Paraconiothyrium cyclothyrioides (CML 3697, CML 3698) on agronomic characteristics of two forage species, Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich) Stapf. cv. Marandu and Megathyrsus maximus Jacq. cv. BRS Mombaça, under different available water capacities. The treatments simulated a long drought period (LDH) equivalent to 10% of the available water capacity (AWC) and simulated 7 (7 DH) and 14 days of drought (14 DH) without water supply. The grasses were evaluated for length and dry weight of shoots and roots. All treatments reached humidity below the permanent wilting point (PWP) and the highest variation in soil moisture was observed at 14 DH, for both grass species. The endophytic fungi promoted an average 15% increase in shoot length (SL) for B. brizantha and an increase of 34% for SL, 266% for Dry Shoot Mass (SDM), and 340% for Dry Root Mass (RDM) for M. maximus treated with P. estuarinum (CML 3699) at 7 DH. Paraconiothyrium estuarinum (CML 3699) guaranteed the highest tolerance to water deficit and sustainable growth performance to both tested grasses.Bacteria of genus Holospora (order Holosporales, class Alphaproteobacteria) are obligate intranuclear symbionts of ciliates Paramecium spp. with strict host species and nuclear (macronucleus or micronucleus) specificity. However, three species under study Holospora undulata, Holospora elegans and 'Holospora recta' occupy the same ecological niche-micronucleus of Paramecium caudatum and demonstrate some differences in morphology of infectious form. The genetic diversity of holosporas by rrs and rpoB sequence analysis was determined. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analysis of Holospora spp., as well as some phenotypic features indicate that there is no distinctive difference supporting studied micronuclear endosymbionts as distinct species. Current diagnostic and treatment modalities for pancreatic cysts (PCs) are invasive and are associated with patient morbidity. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate machine learning algorithms to delineate mucinous from non-mucinous PCs using non-invasive CT-based radiomics.
A retrospective, single-institution analysis of patients with non-pseudocystic PCs, contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans within 1year of resection, and available surgical pathology were included. A quantitative imaging software platform was used to extract radiomics. GNE-781 manufacturer An extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) machine learning algorithm was used to create mucinous classifiers using texture features only, or radiomic/radiologic and clinical combined models. Overall, 99 patients and 103 PCs were included in the analyses. Eighty (78%) patients had mucinous PCs on surgical pathology.
