Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma continues to be a lethal disease, for which efficient treatment options are very limited. Increasing efforts have been taken to understand how to prevent or intercept this disease at an early stage. There is convincing evidence from epidemiologic and preclinical studies that the antidiabetic drug metformin possesses beneficial effects in pancreatic cancer, including reducing the risk of developing the disease and improving survival in patients with early-stage disease. This review will summarize the current literature about the epidemiological data on metformin and pancreatic cancer as well as describe the preclinical evidence illustrating the anticancer effects of metformin in pancreatic cancer. Underlying mechanisms and targets of metformin will also be discussed. These include direct effects on transformed pancreatic epithelial cells and indirect, systemic effects on extra-pancreatic tissues.
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), firstly reported in China last November 2019, became a global pandemic. It has been shown that periods of isolation may induce a spike in alcohol use disorder (AUD). In addition, alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is the most common consequence of excessive alcohol consumption worldwide. Moreover, liver impairment has also been reported as a common manifestation of COVID-19.

The aim of our position paper was to consider some critical issues regarding the management of ALD in patients with AUD in the era of COVID-19.

A panel of experts of the Italian Society of Alcohology (SIA) met via "conference calls" during the lockdown period to draft the SIA's criteria for the management of ALD in patients with COVID-19 as follows (a) liver injury in patients with ALD and COVID-19 infection; (b) toxicity to the liver of the drugs currently tested to treat COVID-19 and the pharmacological interaction between medications used to treat AUD and to treat COVID-19; (c) reorganization of the management of compensated and decompensated ALD and liver transplantation in the COVID-19 era.

Here we developed a systematic decision-making process for providing levels of support to individuals with autism who require additional instruction in order to access and/or advance through Headsprout®. Using a series of single-case AB, ABC, and multiple-baseline designs we examined strategies from our previous research and additional strategies iteratively developed during the study on six students with autism, all of whom demonstrated progression through Headsprout® and increased reading skills. We provide practical implications for teachers and suggestions to research these supports with other computer-based programs.
Two-third of colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors are overweight or obese. Psychological distress and low health-related quality of life (HRQoL) may be barriers to improving diet. We aimed to assess associations between psychological distress and HRQoL and the need for dietary support in CRC survivors with overweight or obesity.

All alive individuals diagnosed with CRC between 2000 and 2009, as registered by the Dutch population-based Eindhoven Cancer Registry, were eligible for participation and received a questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess associations between HRQoL (EORTC QLQ-C30), symptoms of anxiety and depression (HADS), and self-reported need for dietary support (single-item).

A total of 1458 completed the questionnaire (response rate 82%), and 756 (43%) had a BMI of 25.0 or higher and complete data on "need for dietary support" and were included for analyses. BMI ranged between 25.0 and 60.6 (mean, 28.9; SD, 3.6). The majority (71.7%) was overweight (BMI ≥ 25), and 28.3% obese (BMI ≥ 30). Twenty-one percent reported a need for dietary support which was associated with more psychological distress and lower HRQoL. Those who experienced symptoms of anxiety or depression were more likely to report a need for dietary support (27.6% and 28.7%) than those who did not experience symptoms of anxiety (12.3%; OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.22-3.35) or depression (13.5%; OR 1.96; 95% CI 1.19-3.22).

Results suggest that psychological distress and lower HRQoL should be taken into account while promoting a healthy diet in overweight or obese CRC survivors since these factors may hinder adherence to a healthy diet.

The present analysis explores whether demographic, psychosocial, or intervention adherence factors moderated treatment efficacy of Finding My Way (FMW), an efficacious self-directed web-based psychosocial program for newly diagnosed curatively treated cancer patients.

Participants (n = 191) completed a 6-module intervention (n = 94) or attention-control (n = 97) program. Outcome measures were completed at baseline (T0), post-program (T1), 3-month (T2), and 6-month (T3) follow ups. Age, gender, social support, information processing style (monitoring vs blunting), emotion-regulation difficulties, and intervention adherence were examined as potential moderators.

Age moderated emotional functioning and general distress at T3 with significant intervention benefits only observed in younger participants; age moderated cognitive functioning at T1, with intervention benefits only found in older participants. Gender moderated helplessness/hopelessness, emotional functioning, and cognitive avoidance at T1 with meure tailoring and targeting of online programs for cancer-distress.
Patients with later-stage cancer have been reported to demonstrate more disrupted rest-activity circadian rhythms (RACR) than those with earlier-stage cancer, but consolidated evidence of this is lacking. MF-438 The aim of this review was to examine and map the existing evidence on actigraphy-measured RACR in terms of their (1) pattern, (2) prevalence, (3) related factors, and (4) outcomes in advanced cancer patients.

A comprehensive scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework. A literature search was performed using nine databases MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, British Nursing Index, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and SINTA.

Compared with the healthy population, advanced cancer patients were more likely to display weaker RACR, manifesting as lower activity levels during the day, more frequent and longer daytime naps, and fragmented nighttime sleep. The predicted kinematic results showed that the MP design presented similar kinematics to those of the normal knee joint and did not demonstrate paradoxical motion of the femur. A considerably larger contact area and lower contact pressure were found on the normal knee joint (1315 mm2, and 14.8 MPa, respectively) than on the TKRs, which was consistent with the previous in-vivo fluoroscopic investigation. The mobile CR and PS designs exhibited the smallest and greatest contact pressures of the four TKR designs, respectively. To further examine the similarity of Ethiopian breast tumors to those of African Americans or of those of European descent, we sequenced matched tumor and normal adjacent tissue from Ethiopian patients from a small pilot collection.
