Patio Door Lock Repairs
Over time, patio door wear and tear can cause lock malfunctions. There are fortunately, a number of simple and efficient methods that can restore your uPVC patio door's security.
If it's resetting the lock or cleaning the mechanism for locking these simple fixes will increase the security of your home.
Clean the Lock
Patio doors are great for letting the outdoors in while keeping the elements out. However, they can be a security threat if the lock doesn't work properly. As time passes wear and tear, extreme cold and hot weather dirt and debris could affect your patio door's lock and make it difficult to open. With a little care you can make sure that your patio door's locks will always work correctly.
It's important to first clean the patio door lock as well as all moving parts. This will help to remove any grime or coatings that may be preventing your lock from working properly. Start by wiping all the moving parts on your patio door lock with a damp cloth. Then, use a scouring cloth or a damp, rough cloth to scrub the dirt-infested parts of the door frame and frame. It is recommended to wipe the entire lock with dry cloth to get rid of any remaining dampness and let it to air dry prior to using it again.
If you have an outdoor door that has pin tumbler latch mechanisms it is possible to apply lubrication to the lock by applying powdered graphite to the key or applying a lubricant made of Teflon, such as WD-40 Multi-Use Product. This kind of lubricant can be applied easily and will not disintegrate over time. If you are unable to find a suitable lubricant, you might try using a pencil that has an extremely sharp tip. Insert the pencil in the lock, then shake it around to distribute the graphite.
Regular maintenance is also necessary to keep the tracks of sliding patio doors clear from dirt, dust and debris. These tracks are especially susceptible to snow and ice, which can cause them become stuck or slack and make it difficult for your patio doors to open and close.
You can clean the track rails and rollers of sliding patio doors by removing weather stripping that is dirty or damaged. Clean it, then replace it. The rollers for patio doors can be cleaned and sprayed down with an oil that is non-stick.
Lubricate the moving parts
uPVC french doors, like sliding patio doors, operate by using 3 to 4 or sometimes 5-point locking mechanisms that include the handle and lock cylinder operated by keys. These doors require maintenance, the lubrication of moving parts. This can be done using a thin oil (never WD40) and should be done once per year.
If the hinges aren't causing the problem it could be because the door is not aligned. It may be rubbing against or catching the hole of the strike plate in the frame. The solution is to remove the strike plate and use an abrasive chisel, which will enlarge the mortise it sits in. This will allow the latch to fit properly into the hole and prevent it from hitting the frame.
Once the cylinder is cleared of the way and out of the way, measure its width using an object or a piece of wood that will fit in the adjustment screw gap above the lock. replacing patio door is the distance from the outside of the door to the middle of the cylinder, and the inner dimension extends from the center of the adjustment screw to the end of the cylinder.
Check the lock's length
If your patio door latch is difficult to turn even after cleaning and lubricating, it's possible that it's not in alignment with the strike plate hole. Verify that the door is balanced and whether the hinge screws are tight, but in many cases it is possible to move the strike plate up or down can correct the issue.
The latch may not engage properly in the event that the strike of the lock is not large enough. In this situation you'll need to expand the opening using the hammer or chisel and then test the latch to make sure that it connects to the strike plate in a smooth manner without rubbing against or getting caught on the door's frame jamb.
Before buying a replacement lock, first identify the type of mortise lock you currently have. You can do this by looking at the faceplate of the lock and noting if it is round or square. Then, look at the screw holes in the existing lock and note the dimensions of each. This will assist you in finding an alternative lock that is the same size and fits perfectly into your existing hole.
You'll need to identify the mortise lock, and then examine it for bends, scratches or other damage that needs to be repaired. A damaged or bent latch is more likely than one that's frequently used to break. Replace the lock if you notice evidence of damage.
Once you've inspected the lock and decided on the type of replacement you'll need then it's time to begin working on the actual repair. Remove the handle and spindle from the patio door, and then install the new one. Start by putting in the handle in the interior by aligning it with the spindle and then securing it in place by using the two screws or bolts that hold it. Install the exterior handle following the interior handle. Once you have completed these steps check the handles to ensure that they can be shut and open easily and that the latch works properly with the strikeplate.
Make sure you check the Strike of the door.
The strike plate and door latch are two pieces which work together to lock the door. An incorrectly aligned strike plate and door latch will result in the latch not being able to latch the door properly. Fortunately, the issue is usually easy to correct.
Examine the holes that receive the strike plate to ensure they are clear of obstructions, such as dirt or plastic plugs. Release the screws that hold the strike plate in place. This will allow it to move vertically, but not separate it from the frame. Then adjust the strike plate so that its holes for receiving are aligned with the latch hooks on the door latch. Once the strike plate is adjusted, tighten all screws and check whether the door shuts smoothly.
Door strike plates can be difficult to locate for homeowners with sliding patio doors, but they are essential to lock and unlock your door. The plates made of metal are located between the top and bottom jambs of the door where they support its latch. Then, the door latch is able to slide into the strike plate to create an airtight seal when closed. If the strike plate is damaged, rusted, or not properly installed, it could hinder the latch from locking the door securely.
The most common reason for a patio door lock to not close or not close is a misalignment between the latch and strike plate. This can be confirmed using the "lipstick" test. Apply a little lipstick along the edge of the deadbolt, then cover it with masking tape. The lipstick will leave an impression when you shut the door. This will show you exactly where the latch joins the strike plate. If the mark is too low or high you can alter the strike plate.
If your patio door locks for sliding aren't working correctly, they can keep your home safe from burglars. You must fix this problem as soon as possible. Follow these steps to repair your patio door lock and restore its functionality.
