Passive air samples were deployed in Ny-Ålesund and London Island (Svalbard, High Arctic) annually for seven years (2011-2018) to investigate concentrations, temporal trends and potential sources of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Nine polychlorinated biphenyls and twelve organochlorine pesticides were detected in all samples, with 3,3'-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB-11) being the prevalent congener. Concentrations of most compounds were declining. The ratio of the α- and γ-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) in Arctic air was comparable with that in technical HCH mixtures, but higher than that in the atmosphere of other countries, thereby indicating the impact of historical use as well as the possible photoisomerization of the γ- into the α-isomer. The parent dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was always less abundant than its degradation products dichlorodiphenylethylene (DDE), indicative of the impact of aged DDT sources in the Arctic atmosphere. However, o,p'-/p,p'-DDT ratios suggest only a minor contribution of dicofol-type DDT. A slightly declining temporal trend of the trans-chlordane/cis-chlordane ratio indicated the impact of secondary sources. The atmospheric distribution of the investigated POPs in the Arctic was mainly attributed to long-range atmospheric transport, whereas the influence of human activities from the scientific research stations was minor.Rice grains produced on cadmium (Cd) contaminated paddy soils often exceed the maximum permissible limit. A number of mitigation methods have been proposed to decrease Cd accumulation in rice grain in contaminated acidic soils, including altering water management regimes, liming, and genetic engineering. In the present study, we conducted a pot experiment to compare these methods for their effectiveness at decreasing grain Cd concentrations in both acidic (pH 5.1-5.2) and alkaline (pH 7.5-7.9) paddy soils that varied in the degree of Cd contamination. In moderately Cd-contaminated acidic soils (with Cd concentrations lower than the intervention value of Chinese soil standard, GB15618-2018), any of the three methods was effective, reducing grain Cd concentration by 80-90% to levels below the Chinese maximum permissible limit (0.2 mg/kg). However, in the highly Cd-contaminated soils (with soil Cd concentrations exceeding the intervention value) with elevated concentrations of extractable Cd, although both liming and alternation of the water management regime (continuous flooding) was effective at decreasing grain Cd accumulation, grain Cd concentrations still exceeded the Chinese limit. Genetic engineering of rice, such as knockout of OsNramp5 (encoding the plasma membrane transporter responsible for Cd uptake into root cells) or overexpression of OsHMA3 (encoding a tonoplast Cd transporter sequestering Cd into the vacuoles), produced dramatic decreases (≥90%) in grain Cd concentration. Even in seriously contaminated soils, overexpression of OsHMA3 alone produced grain with Cd concentrations below the Chinese limit, offering a highly effective approach to produce Cd-safe rice especially in seriously Cd-contaminated paddy soils without affecting grain biomass or the concentrations of essential micronutrients.Here, we demonstrate that interleukin-1β (IL-1β) contributes to the γ-ionizing radiation (IR)-induced increase of migration/invasion in A549 lung cancer cells, and that this occurs via RIP1 upregulation. We initially observed that the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β were increased upon exposure of A549 cells to IR. We then demonstrated that IR-induced IL-1β is located downstream of the NF-κB-RIP1 signaling pathway. Treatments with siRNA and specific pharmaceutical inhibitors of RIP1 and NF-κB suppressed the IR-induced increases in the protein expression and secreted concentration of IL-1β. IL-1Ra, an antagonist of IL-1β, treatment suppressed the IR-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and IR-induced invasion/migration in vitro. These results suggest that IL-1β could regulate IR-induced EMT. We also found that IR could induce the expression of IL-1β expression in vivo and that of IL-1 receptor (R) I/II in vitro and in vivo. The IR-induced increases in the protein levels of IL-1 RI/II and IL-1β suggest that an autocrine loop between IL-1β and IL-1 RI/II might play important roles in IR-induced EMT and migration/invasion. Based on these collective results, we propose that IR concomitantly activates NF-κB and RIP1 to trigger the NF-κB-RIP1-IL-1β-IL-1RI/II-EMT pathway, ultimately promoting metastasis.Background This study aims to investigate college women's misperceptions about the human papillomavirus virus (HPV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Twenty college women from an urban, Midwestern university in the United States were recruited to participate in interviews exploring their beliefs about HIV and HPV. In-depth interviews were conducted and analysed via interpretive methods.

The college women in this study often conflated or confused HPV and HIV and revealed misperceptions about the severity and prevalence of HPV and HIV.

The results have important implications for understanding college women's sexual risk behaviour and, as a result, can inform the practices of both healthcare providers and public health professionals.

Health care access, health care utilisation and disclosing sexuality to providers are important factors in HIV prevention and treatment. This study explored the associations among sexual orientation disclosure, health care access and health care utilisation among BSMM in the Deep South.
Secondary analysis of existing data of a population-based study in Jackson, Mississippi, and Atlanta, Georgia, was conducted among 386 BSMM. Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) between sexual orientation disclosure to healthcare providers, health care access and health care utilisation.

The mean (±s.d.) age of participants was 30.5 ± 11.2 years; 35.3% were previously diagnosed with HIV and 3.7% were newly diagnosed with HIV. Two-thirds (67.2%) self-identified as homosexual or gay; 70.6% reported being very open about their sexual orientation with their healthcare providers. After adjustment, BSMM who were not open about their sexual orientation had a lower prevalence of visiting a healthcare provider in the previous 12 months than those who were very open with their healthcare provider (PR 0.42; 95% confidence interval 0.18-0.97).

Free HBV vaccination is available for population groups at higher risk of infection, including men who have sex with men (MSM). Identifying correlates of HBV vaccination among MSM can guide the development of health promotion interventions to increase coverage of HBV vaccination.
We assessed factors associated with the HBV vaccination status of 4270 MSM in the Netherlands. Data were collected through the 2018 online Men & Sexuality survey.

Multinomial regression analysis showed that lower education level, having never tested for HIV, not recently diagnosed with a sexually transmissible infection, recently having had sex abroad and unknown HBV testing status were associated with higher odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Living in Amsterdam and testing HBV negative were associated with lower odds of being unvaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated. Age (25-39 years vs younger ages), living in Amsterdam and using pre-exposure prophylaxis decreased the odds to be partly vaccinated as opposed to fully vaccinated; having a migration background increased these odds.

HBV vaccination rates among MSM will not reduce HBV transmission to zero. HBV promotion should focus on MSM outside of Amsterdam who are likely less connected with sexual health services and may be at lower (perceived) risk. The factors identified related to HBV vaccination status provide guidance for health promotion interventions to increase uptake and vaccination completion among MSM.

This study sought to examine the types of relationship-focused content adolescents witness on social media and how they perceive its effect on their romantic relationship beliefs.
Sixteen semistructured interviews were conducted with Australian adolescents aged 16-19 years who were purposively sampled from a larger longitudinal study. Interview transcripts were analysed qualitatively using constructivist grounded theory.

Participants described the types of romantic relationship portrayals they saw on social media, including relationship-focused trends like 'Relationship Goals' and 'Insta-Couples'. Participants explained their ability to identify incomplete and unrealistic relationship portrayals, as well as the pressure to share their relationships online in the same incomplete fashion. Views regarding the influence of social media were varied, but most believed social media relationship portrayals had some level of influence on young people's relationship views; some participants believed this occurred regardless of awareness of the incompleteness of the online portrayal.

Young people aged 16-29 years are particularly vulnerable to STIs. The Young Deadly Free (YDF) sexual health youth peer education program was implemented in 15 remote or very remote communities in four Australian jurisdictions in an effort to address endemic STI rates in these communities. The present study sought to evaluate the effect of YDF for Aboriginal young people.
Young people (n = 128) participated in youth peer educator training to deliver peer education sessions on sexual health topics to other young people in their communities. Pre and post surveys were used to examine changes in STI knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions of the young people attending the peer education sessions. GHRANITE software extracted deidentified STI testing data for young people attending 13 community health services.
