Child maltreatment is a common occurrence and has frequently been shown to adversely impact mental health over the lifespan. Minors affected by welfare practices have a higher risk of exposure to child maltreatment. However, the long-term correlates of child maltreatment in welfare practices and mental health, in addition to potential mediators, are insufficiently examined in later life.
This study aims to a) examine the experiences of child maltreatment, lifetime traumata, and mental health of Swiss older adults affected by enforced child welfare practices, in comparison to an age-matched control group; and b) to examine the potentially protective roles of self-esteem and self-compassion.
A total of N = 257 participants (risk group n = 132, M
= 70.8 years, 58 % male; control group n = 125, M
= 70.6 years, 49 % male) were assessed in a retrospective, cross-sectional study involving two face-to-face interviews.
A structured clinical interview for DSM-5 assessed current and lifetime mental health disorders; self-esteem and self-compassion were assessed with psychometric instruments.
Affected individuals (risk group) had higher rates of child maltreatment and lifetime traumata compared to non-affected individuals (control group). Affected individuals also presented with a higher mental health burden over the lifespan. Across both groups, self-esteem, but not self-compassion, acted as a significant mediator between emotional abuse and neglect and mental health.
Findings suggest that child maltreatment has a lifetime impact and influences mental health into later life, and that self-esteem can mitigate the detrimental impact of emotional abuse and neglect on mental health.

Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may be an important factor in understanding sport participation in youth. Yet, very little research has examined this relationship directly using nationally representative data from the United States.
This study aimed to examine the associations between ACEs and sport participation in adolescents.
Using a 2017-2018 pooled dataset of the National Survey of Children's Health [NSCH], survey weighted chi-squared analysis and multivariable logistic regressions were implemented to assess the association between ACEs and sport participation among youth aged 10-17 years, comparing those without reports of ACEs (ref) to those reporting ACEs. The sample was also stratified to examine gendered differences. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic and child health covariates (physical activity, gender, age, BMI, race/ethnicity, parent reported child health, parental educational attainment, family structure, health insurance coverage, year and mental health conditionds of sport participation. While sport is traditionally seen as an intervention for youth to build resilience, it may be prudent to consider targeted interventions that encourage sport participation in youth who experience ACEs. Special consideration may be needed for boys who experience ACEs. Additionally, the results suggest that utilising a trauma informed framework within the world of youth sport and sports medicine may be of value overall.
A history of child maltreatment is known to elevate the risk of self-harm in adolescence. However, this link has not been investigated for Aboriginal children who experience a greater burden of both.
Identify patterns of involvement with child protection services by Aboriginal children associated with a higher risk of self-harm in adolescence.
A cohort study was established using linked administrative records of Aboriginal children born in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia.
Survival analysis techniques were used to determine the risk of self-harm in adolescence associated with different levels and timing of child protection involvement throughout childhood.
The relative risk of self-harm was greatest for children with substantiated maltreatment in both early and middle childhood had nine times higher risk for self-harm (aHR 9.11, 95% CI 3.39-24.46,p < 0.001) and six times higher for children who experienced notifications in early childhood and substantiated maltreatment in middle childhoodnd address the culturally-specific unmet needs of Aboriginal families. This would go some way to fostering the healthy growth and development of Aboriginal children and reduce self-harm risk.
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive disorder whereby deficiencies in phenylalanine metabolism cause progressive neurological dysfunction. Managing PKU is challenging, with disease monitoring focussed on short-term phenylalanine control rather than measures of neuronal damage. Conventional imaging lacks sensitivity, however diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), a new MRI method may reveal subclinical white matter structural changes in PKU.
This cohort study involved adults with PKU recruited during routine clinical care. MRI, neurocognitive assessment and historical phenylalanine (Phe) levels were collected. A hypothesis-generating case study comparing diet-compliant and non-compliant siblings confirmed that DKI metrics are sensitive to dietary adherence and prompted a candidate metric (K
/K
ratio). We then tested this metric in a Replication cohort (PKU=20; controls=43).

However, proving the biological relevance of distinct microbial signatures and linking specific microorganisms to host phenotypes, remains a considerable challenge. Correspondingly, increased abundance of members of Prevotella genus within microbial communities colonizing distinct mucosal surfaces has been found in individuals diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, metabolic disorders, and intestinal and vaginal dysbiosis. Still, the role of Prevotella spp. in the incidence of these diseases continues to be debated. For many years, poor understanding of Prevotella biology could be in large part attributed to the lack of experimental tools. However, in the recent years significant advances have been made towards overcoming these limitations, including increased number of isolates and improved understanding of genetic diversity. Besides discussing the most relevant associations between Prevotella spp. and inflammatory disorders, in the present review we examine the recent efforts to expand the Prevotella experimental "toolbox" and we highlight remaining experimental challenges that should advance future research and our understanding of Prevotella-host interplay.The ability to briefly hold and manipulate object relations provides a foundation for interacting with our complex environment. Previous studies on working memory focused more on objects than their relations, which is disproportionate in the context of their theoretical importance. This study examined dynamic relations of objects to better understand the storage mechanism (capacity and representation) using a self-developed modified change detection paradigm, where an object moved dynamically, based on its relation to other objects. Eighty-four university students participated in four experiments (21 each), wherein they observed dynamic relations between objects presented on a display, memorized them, and reported whether the memorized relations were identical to the probatory relations. Results showed that visual working memory had an upper limitation of holding dynamic relations. When relations were independent of each other, the limitation was two; whereas in non-independent cases where different relations shared an object, memory accuracy decreased with increasing relations complexity, rather than with the number of objects or relations. Thus, dynamic relations are probably not stored as object features, nor stored independent of objects. More likely, relations and objects are represented in visual working memory as an integrated perceptual unit.Shelf and deep-water soft-bottom macrofauna were explored in the western Gulf of Mexico in terms of species and functional trait assemblages. Their variation was analysed as functions of depth and time, and the relationship with sea-bottom environmental conditions was examined to disentangle their association with potential environmental drivers. Four consecutive cruises (two per year, at the end of the dry and rainy seasons) were performed during 2016-2017 at 27 fixed stations distributed from 42 to 3565 m depth. Changes in macrofauna composition were tested considering species and functional trait assemblages. Environmental variables associated with sediment features (i.e., grain structure, organic matter, pH, redox), oceanographic conditions (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen, particulate organic carbon flux) and potential contaminants (i.e., hydrocarbons and metals) were analysed to identify potential drivers that would shape the structure of macrofauna assemblages. The results suggest that the structures of both species and functional trait assemblages change according to depth and show temporal variation in composition at seasonal and interannual scales. The effect of temporal variation represented about 12% of total variation in the assemblages (11.4 for species and 12.5% for functional-traits). Different patterns of spatial and temporal variation between shelf and deep benthic communities were observed. Variation in species assemblages on the shelf were related to the variation in lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the fine sand ratio. In the deep benthos, particulate carbon flux showed high correlation with the spatial and temporal variation in species assemblage. In the deep benthos the changes in the species assemblage between the dry and the rainy seasons and the interannual variation were highly correlated with particulate organic carbon input in the area.In the context of general ecosystem monitoring of the Greek coastal marine environment, a total of 22 descriptors of Posidonia oceanica meadows were studied in 69 study sites. Spatial variation of P. oceanica meadows' features in relation to specific environmental factors (i.e., light, physical exposure, temperature, and nutrients) controlling their dynamics was assessed in three sub-ecoregions of the Hellenic seas (Eastern Ionian, North Aegean, and South Aegean). The studied meadows differentiated by exhibiting varying growth patterns at both the local and sub-ecoregional scale. Significant differences in morphological and demographic descriptors were observed for meadows of the N. Aegean Sea as compared to those of the S. Aegean and the Eastern Ionian Seas. Light limitation was determined as the main driver differentiating the P. oceanica meadows' distribution (i.e., lower limit depth), demography (i.e., shoot density, meadow cover) and shoots' biometry (i.e., shoot length, shoot leaf surface and leaf biomass) along the mainland coastal zone of the N.
