We evaluate SIWRs on three information extraction tasks, namely nested named entity recognition (NER), binary and n-ary relation extractions (REs). The results demonstrate that our SIWRs yield performance gains over the base representations in these NLP tasks with 3-9% relative error reduction. Our SIWRs also perform better than fine-tuning BERT in binary RE. We also conduct extensive experiments to analyse the proposed method.In this work, we estimate the total number of infected and deaths by COVID-19 in Brazil and two Brazilian States (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo). To obtain the unknown data, we use an iterative method in the Gompertz model, whose formulation is well known in the field of biology. Based on data collected from the Ministry of Health from February 26, 2020, to July 2, 2020, we predict, from July 3 to 9 and at the end of the epidemic, the number of infected and killed for the whole country and for the Brazilian states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. We estimate, until July 9, 2020, a total of 1,709,755 cases and 65,384 deaths in Brazil, 331,718 cases and 15,621 deaths in Sao Paulo, 134,454 cases and 11,574 deaths in Rio de Janeiro. We also estimate the basic reproduction number R 0 for Brazil and its two states. The estimated values ( R 0 ) were 1.3, 1.3, and 1.4 for Brazil, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. The results show a good fit between the observed data and those obtained by the Gompertz. The proposed methodology can also be applied to other countries and Brazilian states, and we provide an executable as well as the source code for a straightforward application of the method on such data.During epidemic outbreaks, there are various types of information about epidemic prevention disseminated simultaneously among the population. Meanwhile, the mass media also scrambles to report the information related to the epidemic. Inspired by these phenomena, we devise a model to discuss the dynamical characteristics of the co-evolution spreading of multiple information and epidemic under the influence of mass media. We construct the co-evolution model under the framework of two-layered networks and gain the dynamical equations and epidemic critical point with the help of the micro-Markov chain approach. The expression of epidemic critical point show that the positive and negative information have a direct impact on the epidemic critical point. Moreover, the mass media can indirectly affect the epidemic size and epidemic critical point through their interference with the dissemination of epidemic-relevant information. Though extensive numerical experiments, we examine the accuracy of the dynamical equations and expression of the epidemic critical point, showing that the dynamical characteristics of co-evolution spreading can be well described by the dynamic equations and the epidemic critical point is able to be accurately calculated by the derived expression. The experimental results demonstrate that accelerating positive information dissemination and enhancing the propaganda intensity of mass media can efficaciously restrain the epidemic spreading. Interestingly, the way to accelerate the dissemination of negative information can also alleviate the epidemic to a certain extent when the positive information hardly spreads. Current results can provide some useful clues for epidemic prevention and control on the basis of epidemic-relevant information dissemination.Policies to address the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) require a balancing of the health risk reductions and the costs of economic dislocations. Application of the value of a statistical life (VSL) to monetize COVID-19 deaths produces a U.S. mortality cost estimate of $1.4 trillion for deaths in the first half of 2020. This article presents worldwide COVID-19 costs for over 100 countries. The total global mortality cost through July 2, 2020 is $3.5 trillion. The United States accounts for 25% of the deaths, but 41% of the mortality cost. Adjustments for the shorter life expectancy and lower income of the victims substantially reduces the estimated monetized losses, but may raise fundamental equity concerns. Morbidity effects of COVID-19 affect many more patients than do the disease's mortality risks. Consideration of the morbidity effects increase the expected health losses associated with COVID-19 illnesses by 10% to 40%.We contribute a full analysis of theoretical and numerical aspects of the collocation approach recently proposed by some of the authors to compute the basic reproduction number of structured population dynamics as spectral radius of certain infinite-dimensional operators. On the one hand, we prove under mild regularity assumptions on the models coefficients that the concerned operators are compact, so that the problem can be properly recast as an eigenvalue problem thus allowing for numerical discretization. On the other hand, we prove through detailed and rigorous error and convergence analyses that the method performs the expected spectral accuracy. Several numerical tests validate the proposed analysis by highlighting diverse peculiarities of the investigated approach.The current study focuses on the relations between observed measures of children's self-regulation and academic achievement, as well as the extent to which observations of children's peer competence in preschool moderates these links. Data were drawn from 102 students (male = 48; Mage = 4.82 years, SDage = 0.46 years) enrolled in pre-kindergarten classrooms. A series of linear path models was used to test study hypotheses, and the nature of significant interactions was elucidated by examining simple slopes and regions of significance. Children's self-regulation, but not peer competence, significantly predicted both reading and math performance assessed using the Woodcock Johnson III, β = .43, p less then .001 and β = .39, p less then .001, respectively. Tests of moderation effects revealed that the association between children's poor self-regulation and poor math performance, but not reading performance, β = -.28, p = .022 and β = -.11, p = .23, was negated for children with average to high peer competence. These results demonstrate the protective quality of peer competence for academic performance using observational methods collected in preschools.At the end of 2019, the current novel coronavirus emerged as a severe acute respiratory disease that has now become a worldwide pandemic. Future generations will look back on this difficult period and see how our society as a whole united and rose to this challenge. Many reports have suggested that this new virus is becoming comparable to the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. We provide a statistical study on the modelling and analysis of the daily incidence of COVID-19 in eighteen countries around the world. In particular, we investigate whether it is possible to fit count regression models to the number of daily new cases of COVID-19 in various countries and make short term predictions of these numbers. The results suggest that the biggest advantage of these methods is that they are simplistic and straightforward allowing us to obtain preliminary results and an overall picture of the trends in the daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 around the world. The best fitting count regression model for modelling the number of new daily COVID-19 cases of all countries analysed was shown to be a negative binomial distribution with log link function. Whilst the results cannot solely be used to determine and influence policy decisions, they provide an alternative to more specialised epidemiological models and can help to support or contradict results obtained from other analysis.Reexpansion pulmonary edema is a rare complication of thoracocentesis with mortality rates as high as 20%. It presents with tachycardia, hypotension, and hypoxemia within hours after thoracocentesis. The exact pathophysiology is not known. The risk factors for the same should be carefully assessed and considered before chest tube drainage. The treatment is supportive. A case of ipsilateral reexpansion pulmonary edema after chest tube drainage of spontaneous pneumothorax is described and illustrated. He was managed with noninvasive ventilation, inotropes, and other supportive treatment and recovered completely.We report a novel and a serendipitous finding of interventricular septal calcification, in a common case of tetralogy of fallot with absent pulmonary valve in a 13-month old male patient. The patient had a stormy infantile course seeded with multiple episodes of severe wheeze-associated respiratory infection. However, he did well postoperatively. He needs to be followed up closely for septal calcification progression and a remote chance of arrhythmias.Primary pulmonary Hodgkins lymphoma is a rare and enigmatic neoplasm commonly seen in females. The aim of this case report is to emphasize that pulmonary lymphoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in a young patient presenting with a lung mass and B symptoms. Extensive clinical details, imaging should be done to rule out the secondary involvement of lung by other lymphomas.Isolated thyroid rupture and hematoma are rare following blunt neck injury and can lead to airway compromise and the need for emergency management. We report a 23-year-old male patient who presented with neck swelling and aphonia following a road traffic accident. Contrast-enhanced CT scan showed laceration and hematoma involving left thyroid lobe. The patient underwent left hemithyroidectomy and accomplished complete recovery. A high index of suspicion for thyroid rupture must be maintained when patients presented with voice changes or respiratory distress.
Smartphone's popularity has risen to such an extent in recent years that it is unimaginable for the people to stay away from it for a minute. The excessive usage has given rise to a condition termed as nomophobia or a feeling of discomfort or anxiety experienced whenever unable to use the smartphone. The aim of this study was to evaluate nomophobia among medical students who are using smartphones.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among the undergraduate medical students. A 20-item nomophobia questionnairewas used to assess the prevalence of nomophobia among the students, and also the purpose and in which context smartphone was used was also asked. Data collected were coded and entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. It was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 16, software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). A chi-square test was used to test the association, and
<0.05 was considered significant.
The mean age of the 451 students was 20.7±1.72 years, and the majority were females. Mild nomophobia was seen in 15.5% of the students; 67.2% were having moderate nomophobia, while 17.3% were suffering from severe nomophobia. The overall highest mean score was for 'not able to communicate' dimension of nomophobia and lowest for 'giving up convenience.'
Nomophobia is an emerging behavioural problem which needs attention. It is of serious concern that all medical studentswere suffering from nomophobia, with varying grade of severity. Increasing awareness regarding the harmful effects of smartphone addiction is needed.
