Beneficial effects of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based selection of spermatozoa for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are still controversial, and further studies are needed to categorize patients that might benefit from such a method.

In this retrospective study, we prospectively collected data of (i) Group 1 96 couples who performed one failed ICSI cycle ("1st procedure," n=96) followed by another ICSI cycle ("2nd procedure," n=101); ii) Group 2 87 couples who performed one failed ICSI cycle (n=87) followed by an HA-ICSI cycle (n=104). Differences between procedures and groups were measured by paired and independent statistical tests, respectively. A generalized linear mixed model analyzed the effect of procedure on the outcomes and the interaction between procedures and groups.

In the present study, we use network analysis to investigate the role of and interactions among individual depression and anxiety symptoms in a treatment-seeking clinical sample.
We estimate regularized partial correlation networks for youth- and parent reported symptoms in a transdiagnostic sample of youth (N = 417, ages 8-18). We examined features of the symptom-level networks such as network stability, centrality, bridge symptoms, and communities in both youth- and parent-reported networks.

Results indicate stable networks with disorder-specific clustering, such that symptoms were more interconnected within compared to between disorders. Symptoms related to self-comparison to peers and negative views of the future were most central in both networks. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were connected by worries for the future and hopelessness in the youth-reported network, whereas self-comparison to peers and low self-efficacy were bridge symptoms in the parent network. Distinct symptom clusters emerged in the parent- and youth-reported networks.

Our findings indicate that negative self-evaluation, negative views of the future, and repetitive negative thinking more generally are influential symptoms in the presentation and co-occurrence of depression and anxiety and as such may be promising targets in the treatment and prevention of depression and anxiety in youth.

The complex cyclisation mechanism to all six compounds was investigated by isotopic labelling experiments in combination with DFT calculations. Chemically synthesised 8-hydroxyfarnesyl diphosphate was converted with isopentenyl diphosphate and AcAS into four oxygenated sesterterpenoids that structurally resemble cytochrome P450 oxidation products of the sesterterpene hydrocarbons. Protein engineering of AcAS broadened the substrate scope and gave significantly improved enzyme yields.
Theories on emotional eating are central to our understanding of etiology, maintenance, and treatment of binge eating. Yet, findings on eating changes under induced negative emotions in binge-eating disorder (BED) are equivocal. Thus, we studied whether food-cue reactivity is potentiated under negative emotions in BED, which would point toward a causal role of emotional eating in this disorder.

Patients with BED (n=24) and a control group without eating disorders (CG; n=69) completed a food picture reactivity task after induction of negative versus neutral emotions. Food-cue reactivity (self-reported food pleasantness, desire to eat [DTE], and corrugator supercilii muscle response, electromyogram [EMG]) was measured for low- and high-caloric food pictures.

Patients with BED showed emotion-potentiated food-cue reactivity compared to controls Pleasantness and DTE ratings and EMG response were increased in BED during negative emotions. This was independent of caloric content of the images.

The hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars is potential as an excellent industrial resource to produce a variety of chemical products. The production of cellulolytic enzymes is regulated mainly at the transcriptional level in filamentous fungi. Transcription factor ClrB and the putative histone methyltransferase LaeA, are both necessary for the expression of cellulolytic genes. However, the mechanism by which transcription factors and methyltransferase coordinately regulate cellulolytic genes is still unknown. Here, we reveal a transcriptional regulatory mechanism involving Penicillium oxalicum transcription factor ClrB (PoClrB), complex Tup1-Cyc8, and putative histone methyltransferase LaeA (PoLaeA). As the transcription factor, PoClrB binds the targeted promoters of cellulolytic genes, recruits PoTup1-Cyc8 complex via direct interaction with PoTup1. PoTup1 interacts with PoCyc8 to form the coactivator complex PoTup1-Cyc8. Then, PoTup1 recruits putative histone methyltransferase PoLaeA to modify the chromatin structure of the upstream region of cellulolytic genes, thereby facilitating the binding of transcription machinery to activating the corresponding cellulolytic gene expression. Our results contribute to a better understanding of complex transcriptional regulation mechanisms of cellulolytic genes and will be valuable for lignocellulosic biorefining.Planar chiral ferrocenes are well-known compounds that have attracted interest for application in synthesis, catalysis, material science, and medicinal chemistry for several decades. In spite of the fact that asymmetric synthesis procedures for obtaining enantiomerically enriched ferrocenes are available, sometimes, the accessible enantiomeric excess of the chiral products is unsatisfactory. In such cases and for resolution of racemic planar chiral ferrocenes, enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) has been used in quite a few literature articles. However, although moderate/high enantioselectivities have been obtained for planar chiral ferrocenes bearing polar substituents, the enantioseparation of derivatives containing halogens, or exclusively alkyl groups, remains rather challenging. In this study, the enantioseparation of ten planar chiral 1,2- and 1,3-disubstituted ferrocenes was explored by using five polysaccharide-based CSPs under multimodal elution conditions. Baseline enantioseparations were achieved for nine analytes with separation factors (α) ranging from 1.20 to 2.92. The presence of π-extended systems in the analyte structure was shown to impact affinity of the most retained enantiomer toward amylose-based selectors, observing retention times higher than 80 min with methanol-containing mobile phases (MPs). Electrostatic potential (V) analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used in order to study interaction modes at the molecular level.Biofilm formation of staphylococci has been an emerging field of research for many years. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still not fully understood and vary widely between species and strains. The aim of this study was to identify new effectors impacting biofilm formation of two Staphylococcus xylosus strains. We identified a novel surface protein conferring cell aggregation, adherence to abiotic surfaces, and biofilm formation. The S. xylosus surface protein A (SxsA) is a large protein occurring in variable sizes. It lacks sequence similarity to other staphylococcal surface proteins but shows similar structural domain organization and functional features. Upon deletion of sxsA, adherence of S. xylosus strain TMW 2.1523 to abiotic surfaces was completely abolished and significantly reduced in TMW 2.1023. Macro- and microscopic aggregation assays further showed that TMW 2.1523 sxsA mutants exhibit reduced cell aggregation compared with the wildtype. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that sxsA is part of the core genome of S. xylosus, Staphylococcus paraxylosus, and Staphylococcus nepalensis and additionally encoded in a small group of Staphylococcus cohnii and Staphylococcus saprophyticus strains. This study provides insights into protein-mediated biofilm formation of S. xylosus and identifies a new cell wall-associated protein influencing cell aggregation and biofilm formation.
Emerging evidence has highlighted the moderating effect of childhood maltreatment (CM) in shaping neurobiological abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, whether neural mechanisms underlying stress sensitivity in MDD are affected by the history of CM is unclear.

Two hundred and thirteen medication-free female participants were recruited for a functional magnetic resonance imaging study assessing the effects of psychosocial stress on neural responses. The Montreal Imaging Stress Task was administrated to 44 female MDD patients with CM (MDD/CM), 32 female MDD patients without CM (MDD/noCM), 43 female healthy controls (HCs) with CM (HC/CM), and 94 female HCs without CM (HC/noCM). A CM (CM, noCM) × diagnosis (MDD, HC) whole-brain voxel-wise analysis was run to assess putative group differences in neural stress responses.

Here, we investigated this question using Triadica sebifera (tallow) and two common and abundant specialist insect herbivores, Bikasha collaris (flea beetle) and Heterapoderopsis bicallosicollis (weevil). By manipulating densities of leaf-feeding adults of these two herbivore species, we tested how variations in the intensity of leaf damage caused by flea beetle or weevil adults affected the performance of root-feeding flea beetle larvae and evaluated the potential of induced tallow root traits to predict flea beetle larval performance. We found that weevil adults consistently decreased the survival of flea beetle larvae with increasing leaf damage intensities.
