Many methods have been proposed to estimate K, including some top performers using resampling approach. When performing cluster analysis in high-dimensional data, simultaneous clustering and feature selection is needed for improved interpretation and performance. To our knowledge, little has been studied for simultaneous estimation of K and feature sparsity parameter in a high-dimensional exploratory cluster analysis. In this paper, we propose a resampling method to bridge this gap and evaluate its performance under the sparse K-means clustering framework. The proposed target function balances between sensitivity and specificity of clustering evaluation of pairwise subjects from clustering of full and subsampled data. Through extensive simulations, the method performs among the best over classical methods in estimating K in low-dimensional data. For high-dimensional simulation data, it also shows superior performance to simultaneously estimate K and feature sparsity parameter. Finally, we evaluated the methods in four microarray, two RNA-seq, one SNP, and two nonomics datasets. The proposed method achieves better clustering accuracy with fewer selected predictive genes in almost all real applications.
Despite the indispensable role of x-ray computed tomography (CT) in diagnostic medicine, the associated harmful ionizing radiation dose is a major concern, as it may cause genetic diseases and cancer. Decreasing patients' exposure can reduce the radiation dose and hence the related risks, but it would inevitably induce higher quantum noise. Supervised deep learning techniques have been used to train deep neural networks for denoising low-dose CT (LDCT) images, but the success of such strategies requires massive sets of pixel-level paired LDCT and normal-dose CT (NDCT) images, which are rarely available in real clinical practice. Our purpose is to mitigate the data scarcity problem for deep learning-based LDCT denoising.
To solve this problem, we devised a shift-invariant property-based neural network that uses only the LDCT images to characterize both the inherent pixel correlations and the noise distribution, shaping into our probabilistic self-learning (PSL) framework. The AAPM Low-dose CT Challenge datconsistently better values.
A deep learning-based convolutional neural network can be trained without paired datasets. Qualitatively visual inspection showed the proposed PSL method can achieve superior denoising performance than all the competitors, despite that the employed quantitative metrics in terms of PSNR, SSIM and CNR did not always show consistently better values.
There are limited data on sex-specific outcomes and management of cardiogenic shock complicating ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (CS-STEMI). We investigated whether any sex bias exists in the admission to revascularization capable hospitals (RCH) or intensive cardiac care units (ICCU) and its impact on in-hospital mortality.
We used the Spanish National Health System Minimum Basic Data from 2003 to 2015 to identify patients with CS-STEMI. The primary outcome was sex differences in in-hospital mortality.
Among 340490 STEMI patients, 20262 (6%) had CS and 29.2% were female. CS incidence was higher in women than in men (7.9% vs 5.1%, P=.001). Women were older and had more hypertension and diabetes, and were less often admitted to RCH than men (from 58.7% in 2003 to 79.6% in 2015; and from 61.9% in 2003 to 85.3% in 2015; respectively, P=.01), and to ICCU centres (25.7% vs 29.2%, P=.001). Adjusted mortality was higher in women than men over time (from 79.5±4.3% to 65.8±6.5%; and from 67.8±6% to 58.1±6.5%; respectively, P<.001). ICCU availability was associated with higher use of Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in women (46.8% to 67.2%; P<.001) but was even higher in men (54.8% to 77.4%; P<.001). In ICCU centres, adjusted mortality rates decreased in both sexes, but lower in women (from 74.9±5.4% to 66.3±6.6%) than in men (from 67.8±6.0% to 58.1±6.5%, P<.001). Female sex was an independent predictor of mortality (OR 1.18 95% CI 1.10-1.27, P<.001).

This could enable fairly rapid responses to short-term fluctuations in growth conditions as well as lasting responses to long-term climatic trends. Here, we present a classification of temporal turnover encompassing 11 possible scenarios. Using orchid mycorrhiza as a study model, we show that temporal changes are common, and discuss under which conditions temporal turnover of fungal symbiont is expected. We provide six research questions and identify technical challenges that we deem most important for future studies. Finally, we discuss how the same framework can be applied to other types of biotic interactions.
To assess the calorie intake and nutritional content of the maternal diet in regions with different culinary traditions and typical foods, and to understand the nutritional profile so as to provide information about the consumption of this population and promote maternal and perinatal health.
From a cohort of 1145 pregnant women with diverse socio-backgrounds we analyzed the dietary characteristics profile according to three guidelines and compared the differences between regions of Brazil.
Women from the northeast had the lowest level of income, occupation, education, and age (P<0.001). Intakes of unprocessed/minimally processed foods and processed foods were more prevalent in women from the northeast than in southern/southeastern women (P<0.001). The consumption of dairy products and vegetables was less than the recommended intake, with lower intake in southern/southeastern women (P<0.001). This study showed a lower consumption of dairy and vegetables, with a shortfall of vitamins K and D, iron, calcium, folate, magnesium, and chromium from natural and fortified foods. We observed a greater consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed food in women from the northeast of Brazil.

Our findings indicate the importance of differentiating the source of calorie intake between regional nutritional guidance and the diversity of local cuisine.Recent genomic data analyses have revealed important underlying logics in eukaryotic gene regulation, such as CpG islands (CGIs)-dependent dual-mode gene regulation. In mammals, genes lacking CGIs at their promoters are generally regulated by interconversion between euchromatin and heterochromatin, while genes associated with CGIs constitutively remain as euchromatin. Whether a similar mode of gene regulation exists in non-mammalian species has been unknown. Here, through comparative epigenomic analyses, we demonstrate that the dual-mode gene regulation program is common in various eukaryotes, even in the species lacking CGIs. In cases of vertebrates or plants, we find that genes associated with high methylation level promoters are inactivated by forming heterochromatin and expressed in a context-dependent manner. In contrast, the genes with low methylation level promoters are broadly expressed and remain as euchromatin even when repressed by Polycomb proteins. Furthermore, we show that invertebrate animals lacking DNA methylation, such as fruit flies and nematodes, also have divergence in gene types some genes are regulated by Polycomb proteins, while others are regulated by heterochromatin formation. Altogether, our study establishes gene type divergence and the resulting dual-mode gene regulation as fundamental features shared in a broad range of higher eukaryotic species.
This study presents an up-to-date, comprehensive and comparative examination of breast cancer's temporal patterns in females in Asia in last three decades.
The estimates of incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted-life-years and risk factors of breast cancer in females in 49 Asian countries were retrieved from Global Burden of Disease 2019 study.
In Asia, female breast cancer incidence grew from 245 045[226 259-265 260] in 1990 to 914 878[815 789-1025 502] in 2019 with age-standardized incidence rate rising from 21.2/100 000[19.6-22.9] to 35.9/100 000[32.0-40.2] between 1990 and 2019. The death counts more than doubled from 136 665[126 094-148 380] to 337 822[301 454-375 251]. The age-standardized mortality rate rose marginally between 1990 and 2019 (1990 12.1[11.0-13.1]; 2019 13.4[12.0-14.9]). In 2019, age-standardized incidence rate varied from 17.2/100 000[13.95-21.4] in Mongolia to 122.5[92.1-160.7] in Lebanon and the age-standardized mortality rate varied 4-fold from 8.0/100 000 [7.2-8.8] in South Korea to 51.9[39.0-69.8] in Pakistan. High body mass index (5.6%), high fasting plasma glucose (5.6%) and secondhand smoke (3.5%) were the main contributory risk factors to all-age disability-adjusted-life-years due to breast cancer in Asia.

At the centre of assessment in CBME are specific surgical procedures, or procedural competencies, that trainees must be able to perform. A study previously defined 31 procedural competencies for aesthetic surgery. In this transition period, understanding current educational trends in resident exposure to these aesthetic procedures is necessary. The aim of this study was to characterize aesthetic procedures performed by Canadian plastic surgery residents during training, as well as to describe resident performance confidence levels and degree of resident involvement during those procedures. Case logs were retrieved from all 10 English-language plastic surgery programs. All aesthetic procedures were identified, and coded according to previously defined core procedural competencies (CPCs) in the aesthetic domain of plastic surgery.
