Single-ion magnetism in the expanded solid-state: information through X-ray assimilation along with emission spectroscopy.
In the present work, we developed hybrid nanostructures based on ZnO films deposited on macroporous silicon substrates using the sol-gel spin coating and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) techniques. The changes in the growth of ZnO films on macroporous silicon were studied using a UV-visible spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD analysis revealed the beneficial influence of macroporous silicon on the structural properties of ZnO films. SEM micrographs showed the growth and coverage of ZnO granular and flake-like crystals inside the pores of the substrate. The root mean square roughness (RMS) measured by AFM in the ZnO grown on the macroporous silicon substrate was up to one order of magnitude higher than reference samples. These results prove that the methods used in this work are effective to cover porous and obtain nano-morphologies of ZnO. These morphologies could be useful for making highly sensitive gas sensors.Composites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles dispersed in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix were prepared by a molding process. Two types of samples were obtained by free polymerization with randomly dispersed particles and by polymerization in an applied magnetic field. The magnetite nanoparticles were obtained from magnetic micrograins of acicular goethite (α-FeOOH) and spherical hematite (α-Fe2O3), as demonstrated by XRD measurements. The evaluation of morphological and compositional properties of the PDMSFe3O4 composites, performed by SEM and EDX, showed that the magnetic particles were uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix. Addition of magnetic dispersions promotes an increase of thermal conductivity compared with pristine PDMS, while further orienting the powders in a magnetic field during the polymerization process induces a decrease of the thermal conductivity compared with the un-oriented samples. The shape of the magnetic dispersions is an important factor, acicular dispersions providing a higher value for thermal conductivity compared with classic commercial powders with almost spherical shapes.Microfluidization is a preparation method that can be used to obtain emulsions with submicron droplet sizes. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of homogenization pressure and cycles on droplet sizes using response surface methodology. Secondly, the influence of the diutan gum concentration incorporated in the optimized emulsion on rheological properties, microstructure, and physical stability was investigated. Taking the response surface analysis into account, the emulsion processed at 20,000 psi after four cycles seemed to show the smallest Sauter diameter values. Hence, this emulsion was the starting point to incorporate diutan gum. Interestingly, the formation of a 3D network in the emulsion, observed by FESEM, was provoked by diutan gum. The emulsion formulated with 0.4 wt.% of diutan gum presented rheological gel properties and enhanced physical stability. This work highlights the importance of selecting optimized processing variables using the microfluidization technique and extends the knowledge of using diutan gum in combination with zein.We aimed to assess the crystallography, microstructure and flexural strength of zirconia-based ceramics made by stereolithography (SLA). Two additively manufactured 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP LithaCon 3Y 230, Lithoz; 3D Mix zirconia, 3DCeram Sinto) and one alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ 3D Mix ATZ, 3DCeram Sinto) were compared to subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP (control LAVA Plus, 3M Oral Care). Crystallographic analysis was conducted by X-ray diffraction. Top surfaces and cross-sections of the subsurface microstructure were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biaxial flexural strength was statistically compared using Weibull analysis. The additively and subtractively manufactured zirconia grades revealed a similar phase composition. The residual porosity of the SLA 3Y-TZPs and ATZ was comparable to that of subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP. Weibull analysis revealed that the additively manufactured LithaCon 3Y 230 (Lithoz) had a significantly lower biaxial flexural strength than 3D Mix ATZ (3D Ceram Sinto). The biaxial flexural strength of the subtractively manufactured LAVA Plus (3M Oral Care) was in between those of the additively manufactured 3Y-TZPs, with the additively manufactured ATZ significantly outperforming the subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP. Additively manufactured 3Y-TZP showed comparable crystallography, microstructure and flexural strength as the subtractively manufactured zirconia, thus potentially being a good option for dental implants.A modern trend in traumatology, orthopedics, and implantology is the development of materials and coatings with an amorphous-crystalline structure that exhibits excellent biocopatibility. The structure and physico-chemical and biological properties of calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings deposited on Ti plates using the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method under different voltages (200, 250, and 300 V) were studied. Amorphous, nanocrystalline, and microcrystalline statesof CaHPO4 and β-Ca2P2O7 were observed in the coatings using TEM and XRD. The increase in MAO voltage resulted in augmentation of the surface roughness Ra from 2.5 to 6.5 µm, mass from 10 to 25 mg, thickness from 50 to 105 µm, and Ca/P ratio from 0.3 to 0.6. The electrical potential (EP) of the CaP coatings changed from -456 to -535 mV, while the zeta potential (ZP) decreased from -53 to -40 mV following an increase in the values of the MAO voltage. Numerous correlations of physical and chemical indices of CaP coatings were estimated. A decrease in the ZP magnitudes of CaP coatings deposited at 200-250 V was strongly associated with elevated hTERT expression in tumor-derived Jurkat T cells preliminarily activated with anti-CD2/CD3/CD28 antibodies and then contacted in vitro with CaP-coated samples for 14 days. In turn, in vitro survival of CD4+ subsets was enhanced, with proinflammatory cytokine secretion of activated Jurkat T cells. Thus, the applied MAO voltage allowed the regulation of the physicochemical properties of amorphous-crystalline CaP-coatings on Ti substrates to a certain extent. This method may be used as a technological mechanism to trigger the behavior of cells through contact with micro-arc CaP coatings. The possible role of negative ZP and Ca2+ as effectors of the biological effects of amorphous-crystalline CaP coatings is discussed. Micro-arc CaP coatings should be carefully tested to determine their suitability for use in patients with chronic lymphoid malignancies.Sulfate erosion is one of the most complex and harmful chemical corrosion actions. Following sulfate erosion, concrete expands, cracks, dissolves, peels off, and decreases in strength, which affects the durability of structures. learn more Polypropylene fiber (PP) is widely used in various concrete structures because of its good mechanical properties and chemical corrosion resistance. However, PP fiber has a number of shortcomings, such as a smooth surface, poor hydrophilicity, lack of active groups in the molecular chain, and agglomeration and poor dispersion in cement-based materials. These issues limit its application in cement-based materials. Although the use of a silane coupling agent to modify the surface of PP fiber is effective, the influence of treated PP fiber on the sulfate resistance of cement-based materials is not significant. In this study, a PP fiber treated with a silane coupling agent was used to examine effects of different cement-to-sand ratios (C/S) and dosages of the treated PP fiber on the sulfateated PP fiber and cement matrix was improved, which in turn led to the improvement in the sulfate erosion resistance of the treated PP fiber.A series of Co2+-doped and Gd3+-co-doped calcium molybdato-tungstates, i.e., Ca1-3x-yCoyxGd2x(MoO4)1-3x(WO4)3x (CCGMWO), where 0 less then x ≤ 0.2, y = 0.02 and represents vacancy, were successfully synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. XRD studies and diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectral analysis confirmed the formation of single, tetragonal scheelite-type phases with space group I41/a and a direct optical band gap above 3.5 eV. Magnetic and electrical measurements showed insulating behavior with n-type residual electrical conductivity, an almost perfect paramagnetic state with weak short-range ferromagnetic interactions, as well as an increase of spin contribution to the magnetic moment and an increase in the power factor with increasing gadolinium ions in the sample. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurements and dielectric analysis in the frequency representation showed a relatively high value of dielectric permittivity at low frequencies, characteristic of a space charge polarization and small values of both permittivity and loss tangent at higher frequencies.Vitamin E is a common compound used for tocopherols and tocotrienols (α, β, γ, δ); it is the component of many natural products of both plant and animal origin. Thanks to its powerful antioxidant capacity, vitamin E has been very successful in hip and knee arthroplasty, used to confer resistance to oxidation to irradiated UHMWPE. The positive results of these studies have made vitamin E an important object of research in the biomedical field, highlighting other important properties, such as anti-bacterial, -inflammatory, and -cancer activities. In fact, there is an extensive literature dealing with vitamin E in different kinds of material processing, drug delivery, and development of surface coatings. Vitamin E is widely discussed in the literature, and it is possible to find many reviews that discuss the biological role of vitamin E and its applications in food packaging and cosmetics. However, to date, there is not a review that discusses the biomedical applications of vitamin E and that points to the methods used to detect it within a solid. This review specifically aims to compile research about new biomedical applications of vitamin E carried out in the last 20 years, with the intention of providing an overview of the methodologies used to combine it with implantable biomaterials, as well as to detect and characterize it within these materials.Wire Cut Electric Discharge Machining (WCEDM) is a novel method for machining different materials with application of electrical energy by the movement of wire electrode. For this work, an AZ61 magnesium alloy with reinforcement of boron carbide and silicon carbide in different percentage levels was used and a plate was formed through stir casting technique. The process parameters of the stir casting process are namely reinforcement %, stirring speed, time of stirring, and process temperature. The specimens were removed from the casted AZ61 magnesium alloy composites through the Wire Cut Electric Discharge Machining (WCEDM) process, the material removal rate and surface roughness vales were carried out creatively. L 16 orthogonal array (OA) was used for this work to find the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness. The process parameters of WCEDM are pulse on time (105, 110, 115 and 120 µs), pulse off time (40, 50, 60 and 70 µs), wire feed rate (2, 4, 6 and 8 m/min), and current (3, 6, 9 and 12 Amps).
