RESULT The rate of CT number, change of VMI was significantly lower than that of SECT for all measured materials. CONCLUSION In this study, VMI minimized changes in CT numbers due to the beam hardening effect and showed a higher beam hardening reduction effect.PURPOSE X-ray film or computed radiography (CR) system has been employed in clinical setting, and these devices are gradually replaced by portable flat-panel detector (FPD) systems. They may be employed to measure the beam width instead of the traditional CR system. In this study, we estimated the accuracy of beam width measured by the portable FPD system. METHOD A CR cassette and FPD were placed at the isocenter, and the pixel values were measured in a single axial CT scanning at a tube potential of 80 kVp, tube currents of 10-40 mA (5 mA steps), and tube rotation time of 0.5 s. Then, the FPD was sandwiched between 0.5 mm copper plate and 2 mm lead plate to avoid the pixel saturation and artifact from the FPD electronic substrates. 12-O-Tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate clinical trial The beam widths were measured at selected nominal beam widths (40, 80, 120 and 160 mm) using a double exposure technique (tube currents of 10 and 20 mA). RESULT Log-linear relationships for two systems were obtained between the pixel value and radiation exposure for parameters less than or equal to 12.5 mAs. A test for the equivalence with confidence intervals showed that the measurement accuracy of the CR and FPD systems was equivalent. CONCLUSION The portable FPD system could be utilized for the measurement of the CT beam width as well as CR system. There are a few children with isolated congenital complete atrioventricular block (ICCAVB) who do not require a pacemaker. We report a female infant born at 36 weeks by emergency cesarean section because of fetal heart rate abnormalities who was diagnosed as having ICCAVB. In accordance with the echocardiographic findings, we simultaneously measured the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) by chest radiography and serum N-terminal pro-BNP (NT-proBNP) and have continued to follow her as an outpatient for about 8 years. CTR and NT-proBNP showed strong positive correlation (r=0.894, p less then 0.05). In such few children with ICCAVB as this patient, CTR measurement during their follow-up would be very useful to easily understand their cardiac load status.OBJECTIVE Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most devastating complications of rectal cancer surgery. Not only does AL result in reduced quality of life, extended hospitalization and impaired defecatory function, it also has a high local recurrence rate. In this study, we investigated risk factors for AL as it may help to decrease its occurrence and improve patient outcomes. METHODS This study was a retrospective, single-institution study of rectal cancer patients who underwent elective low anterior resection between April 2002 and February 2018 at Fukushima Medical University Hospital. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of AL. Patient-, tumor-, and surgery-related variables were examined using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS One hundred sixty-one patients, average age 63.5±11.5 years, were enrolled in the study. The overall AL rate was 6.8% (11/161). In the univariate analysis, modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS)=2 (p=0.003), use of multiple staplers (≥3 firings) for rectal transection (p=0.001) and intraoperative bleeding (≥250 g) were significantly associated with AL incidence. Multivariate analysis identified that mGPS = 2 (odds ratio [OR] 19.6, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.96-125.00, p=0.002) and multiple firings (OR 18.19, CI 2.31-111.11, p=0.002) were independent risk factors for AL. CONCLUSION Higher mGPS score and multiple firings were independent risk factors for AL.Ketones are a fundamental functionality found throughout a range of natural and synthetic compounds, making their synthesis essential throughout the chemical disciplines. Herein, we describe a one-pot synthesis of ketones via decatungstate-mediated formal dehydrogenative coupling between aldehydes and non-activated hydrocarbons. A variety of substituted benzaldehydes and cycloalkanes could be used in the optimized reaction to produce the desired ketones in moderate yields. The decatungstate photocatalyst functions in two reactions in this synthesis, catalyzing both the coupling and oxidation steps of the process. Notably, the reaction displays both high atom economy and sustainability, as it uses light and oxygen as key energy sources.Heterocysts are the specialized cells for nitrogen fixation in some filamentous cyanobacteria. To protect the oxygen labile nitrogen fixing enzyme, nitrogenase, heterocysts keep their inner environment microoxic by developing layers of barrier on the outside of their outer membranes. Heterocyst specific glycolipids (Hgls) are constituents of the layer of barrier and amphipathic compounds, synthesized from a very long chain fatty alcohol as a hydrophobic tail and a sugar as a polar head. In the model heterocystous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, Hgls are made of fatty alcohol with 26 carbons and a glucose, linked by an ether bond in alpha configuration. The fatty alcohol is synthesized via reactions of a polyketide synthase, HglEA. In Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, another polyketide synthase HglE2 shared more than 50% identity in an amino acid sequence with HglEA and is expected to be involved in Hgls synthesis. However, no direct evidence has been reported. Here, we experimentally show that HglEA is the contributor of Hgls synthesis, and that HglE2 is not involved in the development of the heterocyst specific glycolipid layer.Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of main regulators of angiogenesis that functions by binding to its receptors, including VEGF receptor (VEGFR) 2. There are few data available regarding the association between VEGF and VEGFR polymorphisms and the susceptibility to and prognosis of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). To elucidate this association, we genotyped four functional VEGF and two VEGFR2 polymorphisms and measured serum VEGF levels. In the four functional VEGF polymorphisms, the frequencies of the I carrier and I allele of VEGF -2549 I/D, which has lower activity, were higher in patients with severe HD than in those with mild HD. In the two functional VEGFR2 polymorphisms, the frequency of the rs2071559 CC genotype, which has higher activity, was higher in patients with intractable GD than in controls, and the proportion of GD patients with larger goiters was higher in those with the CC genotype. Moreover, the frequency of the rs1870377 TT genotype with higher activity was higher in patients with intractable GD than in those with GD in remission. Combinations of VEGF and VEGFR2 polymorphisms with stronger interactions were associated with the intractability of GD. Serum VEGF levels were higher in HD and AITD patients than those in controls. In conclusion, VEGF polymorphisms with lower activity were associated with the severity of HD, while VEGFR2 polymorphisms and the combinations of VEGF and VEGFR2 polymorphisms, which have stronger interactions, were associated with the intractability of GD. VEGF and VEGFR2 polymorphisms were associated with HD severity and GD intractability, respectively.A 9-year-old neutered male Wire Fox Terrier presented with an 1-month history of hindlimb paresis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a contrast-enhanced mass at the level of the L2 vertebral canal. The dog became paraplegic with no deep perception of the hindlimbs, and the mass was surgically removed. The histopathological diagnosis was of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The dog suffered a relapse of right hindlimb ataxia at 225 days after the surgery. The dog died 434 days after the surgery. Necropsy found a large mass in the abdominal cavity invading from the L2-nerve. link2 This is the first report of MPNST invading the abdominal cavity through the nerve root.A concurrent infection of chicken anemia virus (CAV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) was detected in Japanese native chicks in 2017, in which a high mortality rate (97.6%) was recorded in a small flock of 130 chicks exhibiting poor growth. Histological examination revealed that the affected chicks exhibited two different pathological entities one was severe hematopoietic and lymphocytic depletion with abnormally large cells containing intranuclear inclusion bodies of CAV, whereas the other was renal tubular necrosis due to IBV infection. Immunohistochemistry detected CAV antigens in the bone marrow, liver, and spleen as well as IBV antigens in the kidneys, trachea, and air sacs. CAV was isolated from the liver sample of the chicks, and the isolated strain was designated as CAV/Japan/HS1/17. A phylogenetic analysis of the CAV VP1 gene revealed that CAV/Japan/HS1/17 is genetically similar to Chinese strains collected from 2014 to 2016. An experimental infection was performed using CAV/Japan/HS/17 and specific-pathogen-free chicks to determine the pathogenicity of CAV/Japan/HS/17. The isolate caused 100% anemia and 70% mortality to chicks inoculated at one day old, 80% of chicks inoculated at seven days old also developed anemia, and 10% died from CAV infection. These results suggest that the unusually high mortality in Japanese native chicks can be attributed to dual infection with both CAV and IBV. The results of the experimental infection suggest that CAV/Japan/HS1/17 has a pathogenic potential to specific-pathogen-free chicks and a relatively higher pathogenicity than previous Japanese CAV strains. At the end of 2019, pneumonia caused by novel coronavirus 2019 (nCoV) emerged in Wuhan city, China. Many airline travelers moved between Wuhan and Japan at that time, suggesting that Japan is at high risk of invasion by the virus. Diagnostic systems for 2019-nCoV were developed with urgency. Two nested RT-PCR assays and two real-time RT-PCR assays were adapted to local Japanese conditions. As of 8 February 2020, the assays developed have successfully detected 25 positive cases of infection in Japan. In developed countries, the relationship between education level, wealth, and healthy aging have been found to be mediated by modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, physical activities, and smoking status. The present study was to investigate the association between education level, monthly per-capita expenditure (PCE), and healthy aging in the older Indonesian population, and to clarify modifiable risk factors that mediate this association. A 7-year prospective longitudinal study (2007-2014) was conducted on 696 older Indonesian individuals (≥ 50 years) living in 13 different provinces in Indonesia during the survey periods. Data on educational level, PCE, and modifiable risk factors were collected in 2007. Information on healthy aging was obtained in both 2007 and 2014. link3 A multivariate-adjusted logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for healthy aging by education level and PCE. The mediating effects were estimated using a four-way effect decomposition. Out of 696 eligible subjects, 206 (29.6%) were judged as healthy aging in 2014. The OR (95% CI) for healthy aging for participants with a higher education level was 1.81 (1.23-2.65) compared with those with a lower education level, and no significant association was observed between PCE and healthy aging. An association was thus observed between education level and healthy aging, but not PCE. Importantly, the association between education level, PCE, and healthy aging does not appear to be mediated by the modifiable risk factors. Priorities in making health policy would be different between developed countries and developing countries.
