Diet rich in bilberries is considered cardioprotective, but the mechanisms of action are poorly understood. Cardiovascular disease is characterized by increased proatherogenic status and high levels of circulating microvesicles (MVs). In an open-label study patients with myocardial infarction receive an 8 week dietary supplementation with bilberry extract (BE). The effect of BE on patient MV levels and its influence on endothelial vesiculation in vitro is investigated.

MVs are captured with acoustic trapping and platelet-derived MVs (PMVs), as well as endothelial-derived MVs (EMVs) are quantified with flow cytometry. The in vitro effect of BE on endothelial extracellular vesicle (EV) release is examined using endothelial cells and calcein staining. The mechanisms of BE influence on vesiculation pathways are studied by Western blot and qRT-PCR. Supplementation with BE decreased both PMVs and EMVs. Furthermore, BE reduced endothelial EV release, Akt phosphorylation, and vesiculation-related gene transcription. It also protects the cells from P2X
-induced EV release and increase in vesiculation-related gene expression.

BE supplementation improves the MV profile in patient blood and reduces endothelial vesiculation through several molecular mechanisms related to the P2X
receptor. The findings provide new insight into the cardioprotective effects of bilberries.

Subglottic squamous cell carcinoma (SSCC) is a rare cancer with limited evidence-based treatment guidelines. This study aimed to describe the treatment patterns for SSCC and to determine which treatments provide the best overall survival.

Retrospective database review.

The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for patients treated for SSCC from 2004 through 2014. Overall survival (OS) rates were determined by the Kaplan-Meier method. Clinicopathologic characteristics were assessed by univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, which corrected for age, sex, race, insurance status, income quartile, residence, Charlson-Deyo comorbidity score, facility type providing treatment, tumor grade, and clinical N and T category.

In this cohort of 549 patients with SSCC, the 5-year OS was 48.2%. SSCC presented at an advanced stage (American Joint Committee on Cancer stage III or IV) in 60.1% of cases; 78.3% of cases had no nodal metastases. Among only stage IV cases, multivariable analysis showed that radiotherapy (RT) (hazard ratio [HR] = 5.944; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.76-12.8; P < .001) and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) (HR = 2.321; 95% CI 1.36-3.97; P = .002) were both associated with decreased 5-year OS compared to a group consisting of all surgeries. When this analysis was repeated for only stage III cases, RT (HR = 1.134; 95% CI 0.38-3.37; P = .821) and CRT (HR = 1.784; 95% CI 0.78-4.08; P = .170) were equivalent to surgery.

Using the NCDB to study the largest cohort of SSCC with known staging and treatment, primary surgery may provide a better 5-year OS in advanced-stage SSCC.

Vegetation models encapsulate our understanding of forest function, and whether models can reproduce multi-decadal succession patterns is an indication of our ability to predict forest responses to future change. We test the ability of a vegetation model to simulate C cycling and community composition during 100 years of forest regrowth following stand-replacing disturbance, asking (a) Which processes and parameters are most important to accurately model Upper Midwest forest succession? (b) What is the relative importance of model structure versus parameter values to these predictions? We ran ensembles of the Ecosystem Demography model v2.2 with different representations of processes important to competition for light. We compared the magnitude of structural and parameter uncertainty and assessed which sub-model-parameter combinations best reproduced observed C fluxes and communityphysically unrealistic parameters remains challenging for demographic vegetation models.
To validate the Turkish versions of the interstitial cystitis symptom index (ICSI) and interstitial cystitis problem index (ICPI) for use in Turkish speaking patients with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC).

After translation of the original ICSI and ICPI into the Turkish language, Turkish versions of ICSI and ICPI were self-administered to all participants. Test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient) was evaluated at 2 weeks intervals in the BPS/IC group. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha. Scores of ICSI and ICPI was compared between BPS/IC and control groups to examine discriminant validity. Criterion validity was examined via investigating the correlations between bladder diary data (24-hour frequency and nocturia), visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, and results to the corresponding questions in ICSI and ICPI.

Results of 79 patients with BPS/IC and 50 control patients were analyzed. Both indices showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's α for ICSI and ICPI was 0.879 and 0.923, respectively). The test-retest reliability of ICSI and ICPI was high for total scores and subdomains of both indices (intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.722 for ICSI and 0.777 for ICPI). Scores of both indices were significantly higher in BPS/IC group than the control group (P < .001). Statistically significant correlations were found between 24-hour frequency, nocturia, VAS scores, and corresponding questions in the indices. A statistically significant and strong correlation was observed between ICSI and ICPI scores (P < .001, r
 = .632).

Turkish versions of ICSI and ICPI are reliable, consistent, and valid instruments to evaluate symptoms of Turkish speaking patients with BPS/IC.

Modification of cell wall chemistry via RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated downregulation of Populus deltoides KORRIGAN (PdKOR), an endo-β-1,4-glucanase familygene was shown to have functional consequences on the composition of secondary metabolome and the ability of modified roots to interact with beneficial microbes. The molecular remodeling that underlies the observed differences at metabolic, physiological, and morphological levels in roots is not well understood. Here a liquid chromatography (LC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)-based proteome profiling approach is used to survey the molecular remodeling in root tissues of PdKOR and control plants. A total of 14316 peptides are identified and these mapped to 7139 P. deltoides proteins. Based on 90% sequence identity, the measured protein accessions represent 1187 functional protein groups. Analysis of Gene Ontology (GO) categories and specific individual proteins show differential expression of proteins relevant to plant-microbe interactions, cell wall chemistry, and metabolism. The new proteome dataset serves as a useful resource for deriving new hypotheses and empirical testing pertaining to functional roles of proteins and pathways in differential priming of plant roots to interactions with microbes. In this study we have analysed the comparative photophysical and electrochemical properties of two isomeric heterotrinuclear PtII -IrIII -PtII complexes 3 and 6 and the four corresponding intermediate isomeric homonuclear cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes 1, 2, 4 and 5. The isomerisation originates from positional differences in the formyl, di-2-picolylamine and Pt-di-2-picolylamine moieties appended to cyclometalated or ancillary ligands. The interaction of 5'-GMP with the trinuclear complexes 3 and 6 shows that platinum centres appended to the cyclometalated ligand in 3 facilitate the binding of two 5'-GMP units per PtII centre in preference to a single 5'-GMP unit per PtII centre as observed in 6. The 12 and 11 PtII -5'-GMP binding patterns probably arise from the convenient arrangements of the Pt-di-2-picolylamine units in different planes in complex 3, which is absent in complex 6.Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) [Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic syndrome (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and generalized bullous fixed eruption (GBFE)] are severe drug reactions that often require hospitalization and could be fatal. BRAF and MEK inhibitors (BRAF/MEKi) are a standard of care in patients with BRAF-mutated metastatic melanomas. These agents are administered until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity occurs. This review has focus on BRAF/MEKi-induced SCARs. A systematic search of the following terms 'vemurafenib', 'cobimetinib', 'dabrafenib', 'trametinib', 'encorafenib', 'binimetinib', 'Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis', 'Stevens Johnson syndrome', 'Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis', 'Generalized Bullous Fixed Eruption' 'Drug Hypersensitivity Syndrome', and 'DRESS' in simple combination (every drug with each disease) and all in combination, was performed on MEDLINE, EMBASrafenib seems to be a safe alternative for these patients' treatment. The rational design of anode materials plays a significant factor in harnessing energy storage. With an in-depth insight into the relationships and mechanisms that underlie the charge and discharge process of two-dimensional (2D) anode materials. The efficiency of rechargeable batteries has significantly been improved through the implementation of defect chemistry on anode materials. This mini review highlights the recent progress achieved in defect chemistry on 2D materials for advanced rechargeable battery electrodes, including vacancies, chemical functionalization, grain boundary, Stone Wales defects, holes and cracks, folding and wrinkling, layered von der Waals (vdW) heterostructure in 2D materials. The defect chemistry on 2D materials provides numerous features such as a more active adsorption sites, great adsorption energy, better ions-diffusion and therefore higher ion storage, which enhances the efficiency of the battery electrode. This study evaluated the incidence and characteristics of all-complaint injuries, including acute and overuse injuries, in female and male youth basketball players. A total of 518 players (16 ± 1.4 years; 38.6% females), from 63 teams, participated in this prospective cohort study. Players were observed through one competitive high school or club basketball season to record exposure and all-complaint injuries, defined as any complaint resulting from participating in basketball-related activities, including but irrespective of the need for medical attention or time loss. Injury incidence rates and rate ratios were derived from Poisson's regression with 99.4% CI (Bonferroni's correction for multiple comparisons). The overall injury incidence rate was 14.4 (99.4% CI 12.2-17.0) injuries/1000 h; 13.8 (99.4% CI 11.2-16.8) in females and 14.8 (99.4% CI 11.7-18.8) in males. While the incidence of injury was similar across injury classifications for female and male players, a potential lower overuse knee injury rate was noted for females vs males [IRR = 0.
