Great horned owls are striking birds that can be found all across the country. They are stout-bodied, with conspicuous ear tufts and mottled gray to black plumage. yến thô nguyên tổ vary in color depending on their environment with the more humid parts of their range being darkest and arid regions having more pale, sometimes almost white plumage. Males and females look very similar. Their large eyes have a distinct yellow border. They are very vocal and can often be heard calling at night, especially when a pair is courting or copulating.
Their calls are a hoot! The call of a male is deep and raspy while the call of the female is higher, more musical. When a female and male are duetting they will perch together and both will call and respond to each other at the same time. This is called a display and part of the courtship process. The female will also call while she is incubating her young. They incubate for 26 to 35 days and then the young will fledge.
Unlike other bird species, owls do not build their own nests. Instead, they either use a hollow cavity in a tree or take over a nest of another bird such as a Red-tailed Hawk, squirrel, woodpecker, heron or crow. Some owls will even nest in barns or on cliff ledges. Because of this, they are well-adapted to urban and suburban environments where a suitable nest site may be hard to find.
Great horned owls prey on a wide variety of animals including rodents, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals. They will also eat birds such as pigeons, other owls, ducks and herons. They are also known to scavenge from road kill and garbage dumps. Mammalian prey is typically scavenged by the young.
In the desert, they are very important predators and can be seen hunting at the ruins of the Pueblo and Canyon de Chelly National Monument where they have been known to swoop down on a hawk that has strayed too close to the ground. The Pima Indians that occupy the nearby reservation believe that the Great Horned Owl is the soul spirit or reincarnation of the dead ancestors.
While BBS data show a non-significant population decline for this species, it is common throughout its range and can be found in a wide variety of habitats. It is considered a “landmark” bird of North America.
To hear great horned owls call, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Ideally, you need to be in an area with good forest cover and nearby open areas such as pastures or fields. Choose a clear evening or morning, with calm conditions. If possible, identify multiple potential sites in a block and drive to each, listening for 3-5 minutes at each location. Great horned owls can be difficult to detect using playback, so your success will depend on being in the right place at the right time.
