This study aims to investigate the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with boron nitride quantum dots (BNQD) for improving the antifouling performance. The composite membranes were synthesized by blending different amounts of BNQD (0.50, 1.00, and 2.00 wt.%) into PES with the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. UV-vis absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize BNQD. Moreover, porosity, pore size, contact angle, permeability, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, and antifouling properties were determined for composite membranes. The enhanced biological activity of BNQD was investigated based on antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, bacterial viability inhibition, and DNA cleavage studies. The BNQD showed 19.35 % DPPH radical scavenging activity and 76.45 % ferrous ion chelating activity at 500 mg/L. They also exhibited good chemical nuclease activity at all concentrations. BNQD had moderate antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms. Biofilm inhibition percentage of BNQD was determined as 82.31 % at 500 mg/L. Cell viability assay demonstrated that the BNQD showed strong cell viability inhibition 99.9 % at the concentration of 1000 mg/L. The porosity increased from 56.83 ± 1.17%-61.83 ± 1.17 % while BNQD concentration increased from 0 to 2.00 wt%. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of BNQD nanocomposite membranes also increased from 75.42 ± 0.56° to 65.34 ± 0.25°. The mean pore radius is far slightly changed from 16.47 ± 0.35 nm to 19.16 ± 0.22 nm. The water flux increased from 133.5 ± 9.5 L/m2/h (for pristine membrane) to 388.6 ± 18.8 L/m2/h (for PES/BNQD 2.00 wt% membrane). BSA flux increased from 38.8 ± 0.9 L/m2/h to 63.2 ± 2.7 L/m2/h up to 1.00 wt% amount of BNQD nanoparticles.Despite the wide use of aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), for many biomedical applications, these materials are limited due to their hydrophobic properties and lack of functional groups to bond with ligands to enhance the cell reorganization. Recently, a composite consisting of bioglass and PCL was demonstrated to enhance the mechanical strength and to improve the degradation rate. Although numerous approaches have been developed to improve the wettability of aliphatic polyesters to create a favorable interface with cells, only few surface modification methods can be independently applied to surfaces with different material. In this work, mesoporous bioglass (MBG) nanoparticles embedded in PCL films were modified by the polymerization of aminomalonitrile (AMN) with 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzaldehyde (THBA). The copolymer layer was further utilized as a mediator to conjugate chitosan and evaluate the antibacterial efficacy. Our results show that the hydrophilicil method to create versatile surface properties for biomedical applications.Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) from Lactobacillus plantarum is a novel biocatalyst in the degradation of histamine, but its properties need enhancement before practical application. Herein, we used Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the carrier core to prepare immobilized GAPDH. GAPDH was cloned, expressed in E. coli and purified, followed by immobilization on Fe3O4 MNPs and characterization by TEM and FT-IR. Then, characteristic comparisons between immobilized enzyme and its free form showed that the optimal pH and temperature of the former shifted to 7.5 and 40 °C, respectively, and pH tolerance and thermostability were separately broadened to 4.5-8.5 and 50-60 °C. In a wine-making experiment, including grape and black raspberry wines, using the immobilized enzyme, the results showed that over 81 %, 75 % and 59 % of histamine was removed after each treatment. These findings demonstrate that immobilizing GAPDH onto Fe3O4 MNPs is facile and efficient for histamine removal in fermented beverages.Public health research frequently deals with sensitive topics. A growing body of evidence suggests that frontline researchers who elicit or process participant's traumatic experiences are themselves at risk of developing emotional distress or secondary trauma from daily immersion in these data. This both threatens a study's data quality and calls into question how the harms and benefits of conducting research are distributed across a study team. The objective of this study was to explore how frontline research staff in Eswatini experience and process emotional distress as part of their daily work and to describe potential strategies for resilience and coping using qualitative research methods. We conducted 21 in-depth interviews with informants who had worked in data collection, data entry, and transcription on a number of sensitive topics, including HIV, sex work, and LGBT health. We found that emotional distress is a salient experience among frontline research staff working in Eswatini. This distress stems trategy of relying on team members for mental health support.
Chronic pain is a common problem that can impact on psychological and social wellbeing and activity levels. Despite pharmacological treatments, there is often a lack of improvement in physical and emotional functioning and health-related quality of life. Mindfulness meditation has become an increasingly popular self-management technique. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of patients with chronic pain who took part in a mindfulness programme.

A mixed-methods feasibility study was carried out. Participants were aged 18 years or over with non-malignant chronic pain recruited from general medical practices in Fort William, Scotland. In 2013 participants undertook an eight-week mindfulness programme based on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and were interviewed immediately post-programme and at eight-months' post-programme. Analysis of qualitative data involved Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).

Thirty-four patients consented to take part in the study; twenty-four tookr some, these included undergoing a process of change which may have supported them in living with their painful condition. This contributes to our understanding of how mindfulness could benefit people with chronic pain.While negative encounters between police and the community are not a new trend, recent high profile deaths of unarmed people of color have gained widespread national attention and ignited new movements demanding reform, accountability, and progress. Increasingly over the past few decades, researchers have examined the most extreme cases of lethal use of force, describing the context of these violent encounters, situational and personal characteristics, and underlying risk factors. More recent research has aimed to define the broader and more nuanced adverse effects that policing can have on population health. We propose a holistic and multidisciplinary model for the relationship between policing and population health in the U.S. that incorporates contextual, situational, and individual-level factors while also recognizing the direct and vicarious mechanisms by which policing exposures can negatively affect population health. The model captures the short and long term health effects of policing and the cyclic nature by which those effects at the individual, community, and systemic levels can influence each other. We consider the unique qualities of different communities that may influence these pathways, the historical trends of the criminal justice and policing systems, and recommend applications of the model in policing agencies, medicine, and research.While population health and welfare can be improved through the provision of non-cash benefits, such as free healthcare, many welfare improving schemes have low rates of take up amongst those eligible for such a benefit. One interesting example of this is the Medical Card scheme in Ireland. Medical Cards are a non-cash benefit that provide free primary, community, and hospital care, as well as heavily subsidised prescriptions drugs, for those below specific income means-test threshold. However, despite the significant benefits afforded by a Medical Card, many people forego entitlement. While this has been of concern to policymakers, the prevalence of, and reason for, non-take up, have to date not been examined in-depth. Using detailed household demographic, healthcare, income and expenditure data, this paper estimates the Medical Card take-up rate, examines the reasons for non-take, and estimates the additional healthcare cost burden to individuals due to non-take-up. The paper estimates that 31% of eligible individuals do not take up a Medical Card. Private health insurance coverage, receipt of social welfare, employment status and health status are all strongly correlated with take up. Results suggest that of a lack of information about eligibility status and social stigma are key factors driving non take up. The paper estimates that families who forego their entitled Medical Card typically spend an additional €202 annually on healthcare. Furthermore, as a consequence of higher purchase rates of, perhaps unnecessary, private health insurance, families not taking up their entitlement spend an additional €489 per annum on PHI premia. Welfare losses are likely to be even higher if forgoing medical care due to cost results in future negative health outcomes.
Although the short-term effects of disasters on the physical health of mid-life and older people have been documented, little is understood about the long-term effects that disasters have on the physical health of these people. Based on the environmental docility hypothesis and research regarding gender effects on functional limitations and disaster, our analyses examined the effects of peri-traumatic stress experienced during Hurricane Sandy using longitudinal data from 5688 people aged 50 and older collected over six waves (2006-2019).

We found that functional limitations follow three trajectories, with people in each group having a significant linear increase over time and all but the highest functioning people also having a significant quadratic effect, indicating that the linear increase peaked post-Hurricane and then slowed in later waves.

Consistent with the environmental docility hypothesis, peri-traumatic stress had its greatest impact on people with more functional limitations before the hurricane. Men experiencing peri-traumatic stress during Hurricane Sandy were more likely to experience an increase in functional limitations than women. These findings, which identify people most likely to experience long-term health effects following a disaster, can be used to inform health policies before, during, and after disaster strikes.
