To improve undergraduate nursing students and educator intercultural knowledge and competencies by implementing an academic systems change.

Many organizations have diversity and inclusion guidelines and initiatives for healthcare providers to consider in determining culturally competent care, which has a direct impact on the care given, received, and overall outcomes.

1. Assess student's mindset at the beginning and the end of an undergraduate nursing course. 2. Ensure diversity and inclusion content was provided to faculty through a continuing education program. 3. Review all undergraduate courses for diversity and inclusion content.

The Intercultural Development Inventory®, a 50-item cross-cultural, theory-based assessment tool was used in a pre- and post-test design (n=61 intervention; n=56 control) to determine undergraduate nursing student's mindset and assists the student's in developing a personalized Intercultural Development Plan. The effectiveness of faculty diversity and inclusion education was evaluated using a post program evaluation. Curricular blueprinting of all undergraduate nursing courses for diversity and inclusion content was completed.

The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the post-test between the intervention and control groups.

While evidence is lacking in specificity of how to best implement diversity and inclusion content in curriculum, these results provided some excellent baseline data that can be tracked while continued changes occur.

Anatomic landmarks alone may not always be sufficient to accurately guide electromyography (EMG) electrode needle placement.

Senior residents and fellows (n=11) targeted 4 forearm muscles with anatomic landmarks alone versus with audiovisual EMG feedback. Accuracy of EMG needle placement was verified using neuromuscular ultrasound imaging.

While relatively large and superficial FCR muscle was sampled at a rate of 100% with and without audiovisual EMG feedback, accuracy of deeper and/or smaller forearm muscles (FPL, EIP, and SUP) diminished significantly without audiovisual EMG feedback.

Our study suggests that in clinical scenarios in which an electrodiagnostician relies on anatomic landmarks alone to target small and deep muscles, the risk of misplacement of needle electrode is increased. Consideration for neuromuscular ultrasound to augment training and/or real time guidance in EMG practice may be appropriate.

To compare the responses in knee joint muscle activation patterns to different perturbations during gait in healthy subjects.

Nine healthy participants were subjected to perturbed walking on a split-belt treadmill. Four perturbation types were applied, each at five intensities. The activations of seven muscles surrounding the knee were measured using surface EMG. The responses in muscle activation were expressed by calculating mean, peak, co-contraction (CCI) and perturbation responses (PR) values. PR captures the responses relative to unperturbed gait. Statistical parametric mapping analysis was used to compare the muscle activation patterns between conditions.

Perturbations evoked only small responses in muscle activation, though higher perturbation intensities yielded a higher mean activation in five muscles, as well as higher PR. Different types of perturbation led to different responses in the rectus femoris, medial gastrocnemius and lateral gastrocnemius. The participants had lower CCI just before perturbation compared to the same phase of unperturbed gait.

Healthy participants respond to different perturbations during gait with small adaptations in their knee joint muscle activation patterns. This study provides insights in how the muscles are activated to stabilize the knee when challenged. Furthermore it could guide future studies in determining aberrant muscle activation in patients with knee disorders.

Muscle activity was recorded in 12 participants using sEMG and iEMG during treadmill and overground walking. Inter-tester reliability for visual detection of onset and offset of muscle activity was high (ICC = 1.00). During the loading period, the number of bursts of muscle activity was statistically significantly greater using iEMG compared to sEMG when treadmill walking (p = 0.016), and the duration of muscle activity was significantly greater for iEMG (p = 0.01) on both walking surfaces. There were no differences for peak and mean root mean squared (p ≥ 0.07). The FHL activity observed during the loading period (heel strike to forefoot strike) supports the function of the FHL to act as a dynamic ankle stabiliser of the rearfoot, as well as contributing to propulsion during the latter part of stance. The choice of electrodes to detect FHL activity should be dependent on whether the loading and propulsive periods are of interest, and whether treadmill or overground walking will be examined. The South China Sea (SCS) is recognised as a global hotspot for plastic pollution. We review available field studies and identify a significant lack of data needed to construct a simple mass balance box model for plastic pollution in the SCS. Fundamental information on plastic mass input, transfer and sink terms are simply not available. Also unknown are the rates of accumulation in different environments, the dispersal pathways of plastic particles of different density, the residence times of plastic in the water column and the rate at which macroplastics are transformed into microplastics in different environments. Filling these information gaps is critical for states to determine adequate response measures, including developing and tracking impact of policies to deal with the problem of plastic pollution in the SCS.The morphological description of microplastic particles is mostly based on subjective descriptors. However, data intercomparison requires unambiguous classifications. This work presents a morphological description based on the lengths of the smallest enclosing orthogonal parallelepiped. Three dimensionless parameters, namely equancy, platiness and elongation describe any particle shape with reference on the basic 3D (sphere), 2D (plate) and 1D (rod) shapes. The particle size directly linked to the environmental fate of microplastics is the Stoke's diameter. The derivation of Stoke's diameter based on 3D morphological descriptors is explained and the proxies that can be used if only 2D projected images are available is discussed. This work shows that the behaviour of irregular particles is not adequately predicted using as descriptor the diameter of the sphere with the same volume as the particle. There is a need to obtain equations specifically developed for plastic particles, especially for fibres, and for the atmospheric compartment.Data on the prevalence of anthropogenic debris in seabird nests can be collected alongside other research or through community science initiatives to increase the temporal and spatial scale of data collection. To assess the usefulness of this approach, we collated data on nest incorporation of debris for 14 seabird species from 84 colonies across five countries in northwest Europe. Of 10,274 nests monitored 12% contained debris, however, there was large variation in the proportion of nests containing debris among species and colonies. For several species, the prevalence of debris in nests was significantly related to the mean Human Footprint Index (HFI), a proxy for human impact on the environment, within 100 km of the colony. Collecting opportunistic data on nest incorporation of debris by seabirds provides a cost-effective method of detecting changes in the prevalence of debris in the marine environment across a large geographic scale.Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which is characterized by brain hyper-excitability and manifests as seizure. Due to its complicated pathogenesis, treatment for epilepsy still remains a huge challenge for neurology in the whole world. MciroRNA-134 (miR-134) is one kind of miRNAs which was firstly found abundant in synapses. In this study, we tried to unveil the role of inhibiting MciroRNA-134-5p (miR-134-5p) in excitotoxicity induced by kainic acid (KA) in the hippocampal neurons (HT22) cells. The results showed that treatment of KA increased the expression of miR-134-5p significantly and caused marked neuron excitotoxicity, evidenced by risen cell death rate, higher LDH release and aggravated cell viability. After suppressing miR-134-5p expression via transfecting HT22 cells with miR-134-5p antisense (Anti-134), cell viability was promoted obviously, along with decreased LDH release and cell death rate. In addition, KA-induced lipid peroxidation, cytochrome c release and mitochondrial ROS generation were also attenuated by Anti-134. The level of Sirtuin 3 (Sirt3) and its downstream antioxidant enzymes, such as mitochondrial superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), were significantly higher in Anti-134 group compared with the control and scramble group. After inhibiting Sirt3 expression with SiRNA targeting Sirt3 (Si-Sirt3) and 3-(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl) pyridine (3-TYP), the positive role of Anti-134 was apparently reversed. In conclusion, this research highly suggests that inhibition of miR-134-5p could protect neurons from KA-induced excitotoxicity through Sirt3-mediated preservation of mitochondrial function.
This retrospective study investigated the success rate of withdrawal of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) following stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampotomy (SLAH) for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), and identified predictors of seizure recurrence.

We retrospectively assessed 65 patients who underwent SLAH for MTLE (59 lesional). Patients' demographics, disease characteristics and post-surgical outcomes were evaluated for their potential to predict seizure recurrence associated with withdrawal of AEDs.

The mean period of observation post SLAH was 51 months (range 12-96 months) and the mean period to initial reduction of AEDs was 21 months (range 12-60 months). Reduction of AEDs was attempted in 37 patients (57 %) who were seizure free post SLAH and it was successful in approximately 2/3 of them. From the remainder 1/3 who relapsed, nearly all regained seizure control after reinstitution of their AEDs. The likelihood of relapse after reduction of AEDs was predicted only by pre-operative seizure frequency.
