This study aims to investigate the association between family dinners involving the participation of both mother and her adolescent child and depressive symptoms within the adolescents. Data from 2183 mother-child pairs obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV-VI (2010-2013, and 2015) were employed in the analysis. The dependent variable of this study was depressive symptom of adolescents. Maternal accompaniment at family dinners was the variable of interest. Logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to analyze the association between family dinners including both mother and adolescent and depressive symptoms within the adolescent. According to the results, maternal absence in family dinners was significantly associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in adolescents (OR = 1.42, 95%CI 1.01-1.99). In particular, the association was strong among adolescents aged 12-15, female adolescents, those with mothers without depressive symptoms, and city dwellers. This study showed that maternal absence at family dinners was strongly associated with depressive symptoms of adolescents. For the sake of adolescent mental health, it may be necessary to consider the implementation of policies that emphasize the importance of maternal accompaniment at family dinners and encourage the presence of mothers at the dinner table.Spermatozoa need to conduct a series of biochemical changes termed capacitation in order to fertilize. In vivo, capacitation is sequentially achieved during sperm transport and interaction with the female genital tract, by mechanisms yet undisclosed in detail. However, when boar spermatozoa are stored in the tubal reservoir pre-ovulation, most appear to be in a non-capacitated state. This study aimed at deciphering the transcriptomics of capacitation-related genes in the pig pre-ovulatory oviduct, following the entry of semen or of sperm-free seminal plasma (SP). Ex-vivo samples of the utero-tubal junction (UTJ) and isthmus were examined with a microarray chip (GeneChip® Porcine Gene 1.0 ST Array, Thermo Fisher Scientific) followed by bioinformatics for enriched analysis of functional categories (GO terms) and restrictive statistics. The results confirmed that entry of semen or of relative amounts of sperm-free SP modifies gene expression of these segments, pre-ovulation. It further shows that enriched genes are differentially associated with pathways relating to sperm motility, acrosome reaction, single fertilization, and the regulation of signal transduction GO terms. In particular, the pre-ovulation oviduct stimulates the Catsper channels for sperm Ca2+ influx, with AKAPs, CATSPERs, and CABYR genes being positive regulators while PKIs and CRISP1 genes appear to be inhibitors of the process. We postulate that the stimulation of PKIs and CRISP1 genes in the pre-ovulation sperm reservoir/adjacent isthmus, mediated by SP, act to prevent premature massive capacitation prior to ovulation.Aggressive downsizing of the internal combustion engines used as part of electrified powertrains in recent years have resulted in increasing thermal loads on the cylinder heads and consequently, the susceptibility to premature thermo-mechanical fatigue failures. To enable a reliable computer aided engineering (CAE) prediction of the component lives, we need more reliable material deformation and fatigue performance data. Material for testing was extracted from the highly loaded valve bridge area of specially cast cylinder heads to study the monotonic and cyclic deformation behaviour of the A356-T7 + 0.5% Cu alloy at various temperatures. Monotonic tensile tests performed at different temperatures indicate decreasing strength from 211 MPa at room temperature to 73 MPa at 300 °C and a corresponding increase in ductility. Completely reversed, strain controlled, uniaxial fatigue tests were carried out at 150, 200 and 250 °C. A dilatometric study carried out to study the thermal expansion behaviour of the alloy in the temperature range 25-360 °C shows a thermal expansion coefficient of (25-30) × 10-6 °C-1. Under cyclic loading, increasing plastic strains are observed with increasing temperatures for similar load levels. The experimental data of the cyclic deformation behaviour are calibrated against a nonlinear combined kinematic-isotropic hardening model with both a linear and non-linear backstress.A motion artefact is a kind of noise that exists widely in wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Reducing motion artefact is challenging in ECG signal preprocessing because the spectrum of motion artefact usually overlaps with the very important spectral components of the ECG signal. In this paper, the performance of the finite impulse response (FIR) filter, infinite impulse response (IIR) filter, moving average filter, moving median filter, wavelet transform, empirical mode decomposition, and adaptive filter in motion artefact reduction is studied and compared. The results of this study demonstrate that the adaptive filter performs better than other denoising methods, especially in dealing with the abnormal ECG signal which is measured from a patient with heart disease. In the implementation of adaptive motion artefact reduction, the results show that the use of the impedance pneumography signal as the reference input signal for the adaptive filter can effectively reduce the motion artefact in the ECG signal. This work aims to evaluate the microbiological contamination of sewage sludge (SS) collected in urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) from Portugal. Two types of SS were considered urban mixed (UM) and from anaerobic digestion (AD). The two types of samples were characterized in relation to the main physical and chemical parameters, as well as the microbiological contamination (Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp). Then, sanitation tests were conducted through thermal drying and chemical treatments. Towards a circular economy, industrial alkaline wastes (green liquor dregs - GLD, lime mud, coal fly ash, eggshell) were tested as alternatives to lime. Only six out of nineteen samples complied with the legal limits for both microorganisms. However, drying at 130 °C sanitized selected samples below the E. coli limit, regardless of the initial moisture or contamination. Additionally, CaO (obtained from eggshell) led to the complete elimination of E. coli at any dosage studied (0.05-0.15 g/g SSwet basis). GLD evidenced the ability to reduce E. coli contamination at room temperature, but not enough to comply with the legal limit. In general, this work highlights the need to sanitize the SS before its application to the soil, and the positive role of some wastes on this goal.BACKGROUND The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) may be useful for drawing conclusions about the survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. METHODS Clinical data of 156 patients managed for HNSCC at two head and neck surgery centres were analyzed retrospectively. We studied the relationships between survival and PLR as well as NLR. RESULTS With regards to 5-year survival, the difference between the two groups with PLR values lower or higher than the threshold was statistically significant (p = 0.004), and we found the same for disease-free survival (p = 0.05), and tumour-specific mortality (p = 0.009). Concerning NLR, the difference in tumour-specific survival was statistically significant (p = 0.006). According to the multivariate analysis, NLR values higher than the threshold indicated an enhanced risk for overall as well as for tumour-specific mortality. CONCLUSION In HNSCC patients, a high NLR may be considered as an independent risk factor for 5-year overall survival.Failure of osteosynthesis implants is an intricate matter with challenging management that calls for efficient investigation and prevention. Using implant retrieval analysis combined with standard radiological examination, we evaluated the main causes for osteosynthesis implant breakdown and the relations among them for a series of cases. Twenty-one patients diagnosed with implant failure were assessed for this work. For metallurgical analysis, microscopy techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), stereomicroscopy, and optical microscopy were employed. The results showed that material structural deficiencies (nine patients) and faulty surgical techniques (eight patients) were the main causes for failure. An important number of patients presented with material structural deficiencies superimposed on an imperfect osteosynthesis technique (six patients). Consequently, the importance of failure retrieval analysis should not be overlooked, and in combination with other investigational techniques, must provide information for both implant manufacturing and design improvement, as well as osteosynthesis technique optimization.Purinergic receptors are inflammatory mediators activated by extracellular nucleotides released by dying or injured cells. Several studies have described an important role for these receptors in HIV-1 entry, particularly regarding their activity on HIV-1 viral membrane fusion. Several reports identify purinergic receptor antagonists that inhibit HIV-1 membrane fusion; these drugs are suspected to act through antagonizing Env-chemokine receptor interactions. They also appear to abrogate activity of downstream mediators that potentiate activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Here we review the literature on purinergic receptors, the drugs that inhibit their function, and the evidence implicating these receptors in HIV-1 entry. The κ-opioid receptor has recently gained attention as a new molecular target in the treatment of many psychiatric and neurological disorders including epilepsy. Salvinorin A is a potent plant-derived hallucinogen that acts as a highly selective κ-opioid receptor agonist. It has unique structure and pharmacological properties, but its influence on seizure susceptibility has not been studied so far. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of salvinorin A on seizure thresholds in three acute seizure tests in mice. We also examined its effect on muscular strength and motor coordination. The obtained results showed that salvinorin A (0.1-10 mg/kg, i.p.) did not significantly affect the thresholds for the first myoclonic twitch, generalized clonic seizure, or forelimb tonus in the intravenous pentylenetetrazole seizure threshold test in mice. Likewise, it failed to affect the thresholds for tonic hindlimb extension and psychomotor seizures in the maximal electroshock- and 6 Hz-induced seizure threshold tests, respectively. Moreover, no changes in motor coordination (assessed in the chimney test) or muscular strength (assessed in the grip-strength test) were observed. This is a preliminary report only, and further studies are warranted to better characterize the effects of salvinorin A on seizure and epilepsy.Malignant mesothelioma is an infrequent tumor that initiates from the mesothelial cells lining of body cavities. The great majority of mesotheliomas originate in the pleural cavity, while the remaining cases initiate in the peritoneal cavity, in the pericardial cavity or on the tunica vaginalis. Usually, mesotheliomas grow in a diffuse pattern and tend to enclose and compress the organs in the various body cavities. Mesothelioma incidence is increasing worldwide and still today, the prognosis is very poor, with a reported median survival of approximately one year from presentation. Thus, the development of alternative and more effective therapies is currently an urgent requirement. The aim of this review article was to describe recent findings about the anti-cancer activity of curcumin and some of its derivatives on mesotheliomas. The potential clinical implications of these findings are discussed.
