IL-6 is usually described as a pleiotropic cytokine produced in response to tissue injury or infection. As a pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-6 activates innate and adaptative immune responses. Classical IL-6 signaling involves a membrane-bound IL-6 receptor and glycoprotein 130 (gp130), while trans-signaling relies on a soluble version of IL-6R (sIL-6R) and membrane-bound gp130. Trans-signaling, but not the classical pathway, is regulated by soluble gp130. This study examined some of the biomarkers of hepatotoxicity following chronic treatment with carbamazepine (CBZ), levetiracetam (LEV), and CBZ + LEV adjunctive treatment in male rats.

Twenty-four male Wistar rats (140-150 g) were randomized into four groups (n = 6) to receive oral dose of normal saline (0.1 mL), CBZ (25 mg/kg), LEV (50 mg/kg) or sub-therapeutic dose of CBZ (12.5 mg/kg) together with LEV (25 mg/kg) for 28 days. Activities of the liver enzymes and oxidative stress markers were determined while liver histomorphology was also carried out. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results were presented as mean ± SEM in graphs or tables, while the level of significance was taken at p < 0.05.

The activities of alkaline-phosphatase and malondialdehyde concentrations increased significantly in all the drug treatment groups, while the activities of superoxide dismutase decreased significantly following CBZ, and CBZ + LEV treatment. Alanine-aminotransferase activities increased significantly in the CBZ and CBZ + LEV treated rats compared with control. The liver section of CBZ treated rats showed mild vascular congestion.

We designed a new portable electronic scoliosis screening device (PESSD)-for the identification of adolescent scoliosis based on ergonomics theory. The device measured the axial deflection angle of the trunk of the human body using a built-in angle sensor. Data obtained using the PESSD, a traditional scoliometer manual ruler, and X-ray measurement of the Cobb angle were compared.

The PESSD exhibited more sensitive detection of small-angle scoliosis and improved repeatability compared with the scoliometer. The data obtained using the PESSD showed good correlation with Cobb angle data measured from X-ray images. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a refractory disease due to its unclear pathomechanism. Neither conservative treatment nor surgical treatment during the early stage of ONFH achieves satisfactory results. Therefore, this study aims to explore the available evidence on the effect of zoledronic acid on early-stage ONFH.

The blood supply to the femoral head of animals in the model group and zoledronic acid-treated group was interrupted via a surgical procedure, and zoledronic acid was then locally administered to the femoral head. Four weeks after surgery, all the hips were harvested and evaluated by micro-CT and histopathology(H&E staining, TRAP staining, Toluidine blue staining and masson staining).

The values of BMD, BS/BV and Tb.Th in the Normal group and zoledronic acid-treated group were significantly higher than those in the model group and NS group (p<0.05). The outcome of H&E staining, Toluidine blue staining and masson staining were consistent with that of micro-CT.

The local administration of zoledronic acid in the femoral head had positive effects on the bone structure of the femoral head in a modified rat model of traumatic ONFH and offered a promising therapeutic strategy during the early stage of ONFH.

This article could provide a choice for treating patients who have osteonecrosis of femora head and can be the basic research for advanced development over this disease.
