The conception of antifouling and fouling release coatings, with controlled physical-chemical properties is a promising strategy. Among them, amphiphilic systems, such as those composed of a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane matrix and a hydrophilic polyethyleneglycol additive are the most efficient and up to date. Despite their effectiveness, these systems are questioned due to the petrochemical origin of PDMS. The aim of this project was to substitute the PDMS matrix with a biopolymer, poly(3-hydroxybuyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and to improve its anti-adhesion properties through the elaboration of an amphiphilic system, via the addition of PEG or PHBHHx-b-PEG copolymer. The results, including the physico-chemical properties of PHBHV based coatings and static adhesion tests on a marine bacterium, Bacillus 4J6 and a diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum are compared with those of PDMS and PEG-modified PDMS coatings. Real antiadhesion activity was obtained for the PHBHV/PHBHHx-b-PEG system for a promising eco-friendly strategy.
Patients who develop post-operative acute kidney injury (AKI) have a poor prognosis, especially when undergoing high-risk surgery. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome of patients with AKI acquired after non-cardiac surgery and the possible risk factors for this complication.

A multicenter, prospective cohort study with patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) after non-cardiac surgery was conducted to assess whether they developed AKI. The patients who developed AKI were then compared to non-AKI patients.

A total of 29 ICUs participated, of which 904 high-risk surgical patients were involved in the study. The occurrence of AKI in the post-operative period was 15.8%, and the mortality rate of post-operative AKI patients at 28 days was 27.6%. AKI was strongly associated with 28-day mortality (OR = 2.91; 95% CI 1.51-5.62;
 = 0.001), and a higher length of ICU and hospital stay (
 < 0.001). Independent factors for the risk of developing AKI were pre-operative anemia (OR = 7.01; 95% CI 1.69-29.07), elective surgery (OR = 0.45; 95% CI 0.21-0.97), SAPS 3 (OR = 1.04; 95% CI 1.02-1.06), post-operative vasopressor use (OR = 2.47; 95% CI 1.34-4.55), post-operative infection (OR = 8.82; 95% CI 2.43-32.05) and the need for reoperation (OR= 7.15; 95% CI 2.58-19.79).

AKI was associated with the risk of death in surgical patients and those with anemia before surgery, who had a higher SAPS 3, needed a post-operative vasopressor, or had a post-operative infection or needed reoperation were more likely to develop AKI post-operatively.

In this pilot cross-over randomized controlled trial, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness a HS-written action plan (HSWAP) on patient disease understanding and confidence in recognizing flares and adjusting management. Participants were randomized into a pre-crossover control group that received a verbal consultation (VC)-only, and an intervention group which received the VC + HSWAP. The pre-crossover control group then crossed over (post-crossover control) to also receive the VC + HSWAP (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT04600375). Patient comprehension of their disease and management steps was high after both a thorough VC and HSWAPs. However, the majority of patients prefer receiving both a VC and a HSWAP. After the addition of the HSWAP, pre-crossover control group patients' understanding and confidence of their disease and management plan increased across all surveyed questions.There are various orbital implant options following enucleation. In cases of severe infection, such as panophthalmitis with extraocular extension, it is reasonable to consider a two-staged approach to decrease the risk of infectious complications. One option, illustrated by this case, is enucleation with insertion of an antimicrobial-eluting cement implant, followed by a secondary procedure to exchange the cement with a permanent orbital implant. We report on a patient with clinical, ultrasound, and radiographical findings consistent with infectious panophthalmitis with extra-scleral extension. Intolerable pain and progressive orbital involvement in a blind eye were the indications for enucleation. To reduce the risk of persistent infection, a gentamycin-eluting cement implant (Palacos® R + G as an intraorbital implant) was utilized in the initial procedure. Two months later, the cement implant was removed, and a scleral-wrapped porous implant was placed into a quiet socket without signs of inflammation or infection. In the setting of severe infection, a two-staged procedure utilizing an antimicrobial-eluting implant can be considered.
There may be no competency more shrouded in uncertainty than health advocacy (HA), raising questions about the robustness of advocacy training in postgraduate medical education. By understanding how programs currently train HA, we can identify whether trainees' learning needs are being met.

From 2017 to 2019, we reviewed curricular documents across nine direct-entry specialties at all Ontario medical schools, comparing content for the HA and communicator roles to delineate role-specific challenges. We then conducted semi-structured interviews with trainees (
 = 9) and faculty (
 = 6) to review findings and discuss their impact. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis.

Curricular documents revealed vague objectives and ill-defined modes of assessment for both intrinsic roles. This uncertainty was perceived as more problematic for HA, in part because HA seemed both undervalued in, and disconnected from, clinical learning. Trainees felt that the onus was on them to figure out how to develop and demonstrate HA competence, causing many to turn their learning attention elsewhere.

Lack of curricular focus seems to create the perception that advocacy isn't valuable, deterring trainees-even those keen to become competent advocates-from developing HA skills. Such ambivalence may have troubling downstream effects for both patient care and trainees' professional development.

Geophagy is an ancestral practice particularly found among African women who describe beneficial effects on the sympathetic signs of pregnancy. Studies have reported a significant prevalence of consumption of kaolin, known as geophagy, within migrant population. However, this behavior, like other environmental factors, could lead to obstetrical and neonatal risks.

The objective of our study was to evaluate the obstetrical and neonatal impact of kaolin consumption, especially on Z-SCORE for weight-for-gestational age in the newborn.

This mono-centric historical cohort study was carried out on the basis of questionnaires and patients' obstetrical records. It was conducted between January 1 and July 1, 2017. Patients were divided into two groups 1) women who consumed kaolin (at least once during their pregnancy), and 2) women who did not consume kaolin. Morphometric characteristics of the newborn were retrieved in obstetrical records.

Results 105 pregnant women were included 26 exposed and 79 non exposedudy found no association between kaolin consumption and birth weight. However, there was a correlation between precariousness and low birth weight which reinforces the importance of tightening the follow-up during pregnancies in the most precarious women.A series of 1, 2, 3- triazole hybrids (9a-9n) were synthesised from major phenolic constituent, 4-methoxy ethyl cinnamate (5) isolated from rhizomes of Hedychium spicatum (Sm), a traditional medicinal plant used in variety of disease conditions. All the synthesised analogues were tested for their in vitro antiproliferative potential against HCT 116 (colon cancer), A549 (lung cancer), DU-145 (prostate cancer), Hep G2 (hepatoma) and HEK-293 (normal) cell lines. Among the compounds tested, compounds 9i and 9k potently arrested proliferation of DU-145 (prostate cancer) cell line. Compound 9i displayed 20 times better antiproliferative potential than parent compound and almost identical inhibitory activity to that of the standard drug, doxorubicin. The flow cytometric analysis revealed that 9i arrested cells in G2/M phase of cell cycle and induced apoptosis. Overall, the hybrid derivative 9i was found to be a potential antiproliferative lead against prostate cancer.The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is an endangered species that continues to experience population decline. Understanding the behavior of this species is a critical step in the conservation efforts to prevent their extinction. A comprehensive activity budget of this species has yet to be conducted in any captive population, which are critical for the Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding programs. We performed scan sampling observations on a group of 19 penguins to construct an activity budget. We also investigated the behavioral differences between males and females, as well as between adults and juveniles. Results indicate there are minimal sex differences in time budget allocations, but there are some notable age related differences. Creating and comparing activity budgets between populations are critical for understanding animal welfare in captive settings.Tyrosinase (TYR) inhibitors are in great demand in the food, cosmetic and medical industrials due to their important roles. Therefore, the discovery of high-quality TYR inhibitors is always pursued. Natural products as one of the most important sources of bioactive compounds discovery have been increasingly used for TYR inhibitors screening. However, due to their complex compositions, it is still a great challenge to rapid screening and identification of biologically active components from them. In recent years, with the help of separation technologies and the affinity and intrinsic activity of target enzymes, two advanced approaches including affinity screening and inhibition profiling showed great promises for a successful screening of bioactive compounds from natural sources. This review summarises the recent progress of separation-based methods for TYR inhibitors screening, with an emphasis on the principle, application, advantage, and drawback of each method along with perspectives in the future development of these screening techniques and screened hit compounds.
