Nationally representative studies of the combined impact of drinking and body mass (BMI) on mortality outcomes are unavailable. We investigate whether both act together to elevate risk of all-cause or liver mortality.

We obtained self-reported histories of drinking and BMI from 129 098 women (mean age 47.2 years) and 102 568 men (mean age 45.6 years) ≥18 years interviewed from 1997 to 2004 in the National Health Interview Survey and related these data to the deaths that occurred by 31 December 2006 (women = 8486; men = 7819 deaths). Death hazards among current drinkers in different BMI groups were adjusted for age, education, race and smoking.

Prolonged acneiform eruptions treated with topical corticosteroids, a standard management, may be associated with secondary bacterial infections, thus there is a need for new treatments. We conducted a multicenter, phase II trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical benzoyl peroxide for epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor-induced prolonged acneiform eruptions. Patients with colorectal, non-small lung cell, and head and neck cancers who received epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors for >10 weeks and had persistent acneiform eruptions were eligible. Topical benzoyl peroxide was applied to the affected area of the face once daily for 8 weeks; a clinical evaluation was performed every 2 weeks. The primary endpoint was a change in acneiform eruption severity evaluated between disease onset and end of the treatment period. The quality of life of patients was assessed using the Dermatology Life Quality Index. Of the 14 enrolled patients, 11 completed the trial. The protocol-specified grade of acneiform eruptions from baseline to week 8 improved from 2.0 to 1.0 (P less then 0.01). The dermatology life quality index score from baseline to week 8 improved from 3.0 to 1.0 point (P less then 0.01). No patient experienced severe adverse events. A repeated measures design assessed changes in cognitive function during detoxification. Twenty-one participants with AD (16 Male; Mean age 43.85±6.21) completed a battery of alcohol and memory questionnaires and BG tasks at two time-points (∼days 4 and 10) during a single managed detoxification episode.

Repeated measures ANCOVA revealed that some BG metrics significantly improved, with medium to large effect sizes - processing speed, focus, temporal order judgement and overall cortical metric. However, differences in subjective cognitive function were non-significant after controlling for depression and anxiety change scores. Anxiety change emerged as a significant factor in subjective cognitive function.

We conclude it is possible that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) recovers more slowly compared to other brain areas, and there are compounding effects of improvements in anxiety and depression, and metacognitive deficits on subjective EF assessments. EGP is defined by the generation of glucose from substrates through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, usually in fasted states, for local and systemic use. Abnormal increases in EGP are noted in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, and elevated EGP may also impact the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and congestive heart failure. In this narrative review, we performed a literature search in PubMed to identify recently published English language articles characterizing EGP in critical illness. Evidence from preclinical and clinical studies demonstrates that critical illness can disrupt EGP through multiple mechanisms including increased systemic inflammation, counterregulatory hormone and catecholamine release, alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, insulin resistance, lactic acidosis, and iatrogenic insults such as vasopressors and glucocorticoids administered as part of clinical care. EGP contributes to hyperglycemia in critical illness when abnormally elevated and to hypoglycemia when abnormally depressed, each of which has been independently associated with increased mortality. Increased EGP may also promote protein catabolism that could worsen critical illness myopathy and impede recovery. Better understanding of the mechanisms and factors contributing to dysregulated EGP in critical illness may help in the development of therapeutic strategies that promote euglycemia, reduce intensive care unit-associated catabolism, and improve patient outcomes.Since the 1990s 'rights-based approaches' (RBA) has become a well-established concept, informing the work of diverse actors in development and humanitarian aid. Drawing on new qualitative data from Pakistan, this paper examines how 'global' RBA norms are operationalized in 'local' contexts characterized by great normative diversity and identifies three dominant normative frameworks used by the NGOs in the translation of RBAs humanitarian standards, citizen rights, and Islamic principles. This paper draws from a case study of RBAs in Pakistan and reveals the significance of religion and religious actors in the translation of rights. From this example, the article offers a conceptual distinction between instrumental and substantial modes of engagement, a framing that allows for a more detailed analysis of how humanitarian actors deal with religion and rights than what is often found in studies of humanitarian action. Using chemical and molecular assays [DNA barcoding targeting the chloroplast ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large chain (rbcL) gene], the authors show that at the two sites plant feeding in this mosquito species (a) varies by sex and season; (b) results in the acquisition of diverse sugars, and (c) is associated with diverse host plants in the families Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Poaceae and Rosaceae. These results reveal insights into the plant sugar feeding patterns of wild-caught Ae. aegypti and provide a baseline for future studies on the olfactory basis for host plant attraction for the development of vector monitoring and control tools.
