During radiation therapy (RT) for prostate cancer, bladder filling helps exclude the organ from irradiation and reduces adverse effects. For RT planning, we performed computed tomography (CT) for 2 consecutive days to evaluate inter-day variations in organs such as the bladder. However, the patient factors that are associated with large intra-patient variations in bladder filling volume prior to RT are not known.
This was a retrospective study of 97 prostate cancer patients who underwent CT for 2 consecutive days for RT planning between March 2015 and March 2020 and with confirmed water intake volume before the scans. Patients consumed 500 ml of water immediately after urination and underwent CT 30 min after the start of water intake; CT was performed under similar conditions over 2 consecutive days. Patient information was collected from the medical records taken before CT.
The median bladder filling volume was 102.8 cm
(range 31.7-774.0), and the median intra-patient bladder filling volume variation was 23.4 cm
(range 0.4-277.7). Univariate analysis revealed that the intra-patient variation was significantly larger in patients with an eGFR higher than the median (p = 0.003). No other factor showed correlations with the variation. As the larger bladder filling volume of the 2 consecutive days in patients increased (median 121.5 cm
, range 47.8-774.0), the intra-patient variation also increased.
Patients with a higher eGFR show greater variation in bladder filling volume, and caution should be exercised when applying RT in these patients.

However, there have been many switches from a free-living to a symbiotic (including parasitism) mode of existence in the evolutionary trajectories of various nematode clades. Here, we attempt to summarize all known cases of symbioses (from commensalism to true parasitism) between marine nematodes representing non-parasitic taxa and various larger animals, ranging from protists to vertebrates. Most cases are of nematodes relating to dwelling on crustaceans (ectocommensalism) or living in the body cavity and internal organs of various invertebrates (endoparasitism or parasitoidism). Ectocommensal species may differ from their free-living relatives in their longer filiform bodies and enlarged ventral and caudal glands, which may be interpreted as adaptations for the purpose of fixation on the body surface of a motile host. Endoparasitic species are characterized by deep anatomical modification, including rudimentation of the alimentary tract and hypertrophy of reproductive organs. Unlike terrestrial and limnetic invertebrates, marine invertebrates have almost no intestinal nematode dwellers. The evolutionary trajectories of nematode dwellers of marine and non-marine invertebrates are compared. This article is protected by copyright. LCOFs are built to highly ordered and periodic 2D or 3D framework structures through covalently assembling with various luminophore building blocks. Recently, the advantages of LCOFs including predesigned properties of structure, unique photoluminescence, hypotoxicity and good biocompatibility and tumor penetration, broaden their applications in biorelated fields, such as biosensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery. A specific review that analyses the advances of LCOFs in the field of biosensing and bioimaging is thus urged to emerge. Here the construction of LCOFs is reviewed first. The synthetic chemistry of LCOFs highlights the key role of chemical linkages, which not only concrete the building blocks but also affect the optical properties and even can act as the responsive sites for potential sensing applications. How to brighten LCOFs are clarified through description of structure managements. The ability to utilize the luminescence of LCOFs for applications in biosensing and bioimaging is discussed using state-of-the-art examples of varied practical goals. A prospect finally addresses opportunities and challenges the development of LCOFs facing from chemistry, physics to the applications, according to their current progress.Herein, we report, four new mixed ligand complexes of Cobalt(II) and Iron(III), viz., [Co(L1 )(L2 )(H2 O)2 ]Cl2 (1), [Co(L1 )(L2 )(L3 )(H2 O)]Cl2 (2), [Fe(L1 )(L2 )(H2 O)2 ]Cl3 (3), and [Fe(L1 )(L2 )(L3 )(H2 O)]Cl3 (4), where L1 = 1,10-phenanthroline (C12 H8 N2 ), L2 = 2,2'-bipyridine (C10 H8 N2 ), and L3 = acetamide (C2 H5 NO)). They were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic analysis (ESI-MS, ICP-OES, FT-IR, and UV-Vis), elemental analysis, melting point determination, and conductance measurement. The in vitro antibacterial activity was tested on two Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes) and two Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. Coli)and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) bacteria using the disc diffusion method. Based on the analytical and spectroscopic data, octahedral geometries are assigned to the complexes. Co(II) complexes were found more active against K. pneumoniae than the corresponding Fe(III) complexes which indicated that antibacterial activities of metal complexes have tuned with the nature of the metal. The results provide an insight to design and readily prepare task-specific metal-based drugs for interaction with particular bacterial strains.Exploring new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores to construct high-efficiency sensing systems is always a hot direction for developing ECL sensors. Compared with other luminophores, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit high mass transfer ability for accelerating the reactivity in its pore channels, which is conducive to improving the performance of ECL sensors. In this work, La3+ -BTC MOFs (LaMOFs) are prepared as the highly active reactor and novel ECL luminophore. On this basis, a novel co-quenching effect mechanism is proposed based on double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) triggered cooperation between LaMOFs and crystal violet (CV) molecules. Under the confined pore channels of LaMOFs, CV can play an important role as the photon-acceptor due to the matched absorption spectrum with the ECL spectrum of LaMOFs, and the electron-acceptor on account of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Based on the proposed co-quenching effect mechanism, a constructed ECL gene sensor shows good assay performance toward p53 gene in the detection range of 1 pm to 100 nm with a detection limit of 0.33 pm. The co-quenching effect integrating LaMOFs with CV is expected to be a versatile approach in the construction of ECL gene sensor, which has good prospect in expanding the application range of ECL technology.
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective in preventing HIV transmission. United States Public Health Service (USPHS) clinical practice guidelines define biobehavioral indications for initiation. To assess guideline implementation, it is critical to quantify PrEP nonusers who are indicated and PrEP users who are not indicated. We sought to estimate current PrEP use among US men who have sex with men (MSM), characterize whether their PrEP use aligned with their current indications for PrEP, and assess whether the association between PrEP indications and PrEP use differed by demography or geography.
Using data from a US web-based sexual network study of MSM between 2017 and 2019, we measured PrEP usage and assessed whether respondents met indications for PrEP. Log-binomial regression was used to estimate the relationship between PrEP indications and PrEP use, with adjustment for geography, age and race/ethnicity.
Of 3508 sexually active, HIV-negative MSM, 34% met indications for PrEP. The proportiong periods of elevated sexual risk and to close the gap between indications and uptake.
Indications for PrEP strongly predicted current PrEP use among US MSM. However, we identified substantial misalignment between indications and use in both directions (indicated MSM who were not benefitting from PrEP, and MSM taking PrEP while not presently being indicated). PrEP underuse by those at greatest risk for HIV acquisition may limit the projected impact of PrEP implementation, despite reported increases in PrEP provision. This calls for further implementation efforts to improve PrEP delivery to those most in need during periods of elevated sexual risk and to close the gap between indications and uptake.A single transistor neuron (1T-neuron) is demonstrated by using a vertically protruded nanowire from an 8 in. silicon (Si) wafer. The 1T-neuron adopts a gate-all-around structure to completely surround the Si nanowire (Si-NW) to make a floating body and allow aggressive downscaling. The Si-NW is composed of an n+ drain at the top, n+ source at the bottom, and p-type floating body at the middle, which are self-aligned vertically. Thus, it occupies a small footprint area. The gate controls an excitatory/inhibitory function. In addition, myelination of a biological neuron that changes membrane capacitance is mimicked by an inherently asymmetric source/drain structure. Two spiking frequencies at the same input current are controlled by whether the neuron is myelinated or unmyelinated. Using the vertical 1T-neuron, pattern recognition is demonstrated with both measurements and semiempirical circuit simulations. Furthermore, handwritten numbers in the MNIST database are recognized with accuracy of 93% by software-based simulations. Applicability of the vertical 1T-neuron to various neural networks is verified, including a single-layer perceptron, multilayer perceptron, and spiking neural network.
The clinical significance of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) among adults remains underinvestigated. We compared the characteristics and population-based attack rates of RSV and influenza hospitalizations.
During 2018-2020, we recruited hospitalized adults with respiratory infection to our prospective substudy at a tertiary care hospital in Finland and compared the characteristics of RSV and influenza patients. In our retrospective substudy, we calculated the attack rates of all RSV and influenza hospitalizations among adults in the same geographic area during 2016-2020.
Of the 537 prospective substudy patients, 31 (6%) had RSV, and 106 (20%) had influenza. Duration of hospitalization, need for intensive care or outcome did not differ significantly between RSV and influenza patients. RSV was more often missed or its diagnosis omitted from medical record (13% vs. 1%, p = 0.016 and 52% vs. 85%, p < 0.001). In the retrospective substudy, the mean attack rates of RSV, influenza A, and influenza B hospie effective interventions. The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to mitigate its spread have had a dramatic effect on the circulation patterns of other respiratory viruses, most especially influenza viruses. Since April 2020, the global circulation of influenza has been markedly reduced; however, it is still present in a number of different countries and could pose a renewed threat in the upcoming Northern Hemisphere winter. Influenza vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure that we have at our disposal against influenza infections and should not be ignored for the 2021-2022 season.
