والمغناطيسس عبارة عن مادة تنتج الحقل المغناطيسي وتولّده لاستقطاب وجذب المواد القابلة للجذب إليها كالحديدولا يعتبر اكتشاف المغناطيس حديث النشأة إنّما يعود إلى العصور القديمةإذ تمكّنت الحضارات الفرعونيّة والصينية والهندية التي عاشت في العصور القديمة من اكتشافه واستخدامه، وكان أوّل استخدام له في المجال الطبي للتخلص من مشاكل العظام والمفاصل وآلامها، كما استخدم قديماً كوسيلةٍ لسحب الطاقة السلبيّة من جسم الإنسان ومنحه الطاقة الإيجابيّة
المواد المغناطيسية
تسمى المواد التي يجذبها المغناطيس بشدة مواد مغناطيسية ، مثل المسامير الفولاذية
وهي مواد في الغالب مصنوعة من الحديد ، والكوبلت ، والنيكل ، والكروم و غيرها
ويطلق عليها أحيانًا اسم الموادالفيرو مغناطيسية
المواد غير المغناطيسية
وهي المواد التي لا تنجذب نحو المغناطيس ، مثل النحاس والخشب والزجاج ، وقد بيّنت التجارب أنه إذا استعملنا مغانط قوية جدًا ، فإن هذه المواد تتأثر تأثرًا طفيفًا بهذه المغانط ، وتصنف هذه المواد إلى قسمين : يسمى أحدهما المواد شبه المغناطيسية أو بارا مغناطيسيةوالآخر يسمى دايا مغناطيسية
