After propensity score matching, the in-hospital mortality remained significantly lower in the IABP group (28.10% vs. 37.59%, p = 0.018).
In the current cohort, IABP treatment was associated with a lower risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock. Due to the complexity of pathophysiology in cardiogenic shock and the discrepancies in current evidence, our results should be validated through further studies in the future.

Diagnosing arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) at an early stage can be challenging even after ECG recording and a combination of several imaging techniques. The purpose of this study was to explore if a body surface mapping (BSM) system with 252-leads could identify repolarization abnormalities and thereby diagnose early stages of ARVC.
ARVC patients, gene carriers without signs of ARVC and controls underwent a 12-lead resting ECG, signal-averaged ECG, echocardiography, 24-hours Holter monitoring, and BSM with electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI). All 252-leads, divided into four quadrants of the vest, were analyzed regarding concordances between T wave polarity and QRS main vector.
Of 40 patients included there were 12 ARVC patients, 20 gene carriers, and 8 controls. The ARVC patients had two different repolarization patterns, one with more pronounced negative T waves at the lower left panel and another with mixed changes that clearly differed from the controls, all of whom had a normal 12 lead ECGs and consistent repolarization patterns on their BSM recordings. The patterns observed in ARVC patients were also present in 5/20 (25%) gene carriers, three of whom had normal resting ECG. A novel repolarization index successfully detected all ARVC patients and 88% of gene carriers with pathologic repolarization pattern.
The finding that abnormal repolarization patterns could be unmasked by BSM in 25% of healthy gene carriers, suggests that it may potentially be a useful tool for identifying early manifestations of ARVC. Further and larger studies are warranted to assess its diagnostic accuracy.

Proposed phenotypes have recently been identified in cardiogenic shock (CS) populations using unsupervised machine learning clustering methods. We sought to validate these phenotypes in a mixed cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) population of patients with CS.
We included Mayo Clinic CICU patients admitted from 2007 to 2018 with CS. Agnostic K means clustering was used to assign patients to threeclusters based on admission values of estimated glomerular filtration rate, bicarbonate, alanine aminotransferase, lactate, platelets, and white blood cell count. In-hospital mortality and 1-year mortality were analyzed using logistic regression and Cox proportional-hazards models, respectively.
We included 1498 CS patients with a mean age of 67.8 ± 13.9 years, and 37.1% were females. The acute coronary syndrome was present in 57.3%, and cardiac arrest was present in 34.0%. Patients were assigned to clusters as follows Cluster 1 (noncongested), 603 (40.2%); Cluster 2 (cardiorenal), 452 (30.2%); and Cluster 3 (heS patients beyond standard measures.Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) is inappropriate to assess the direct effects of treatment on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by locoregional therapies, such as radiofrequency ablation or transarterial chemoembolization. Therefore, establishment of response evaluation criteria solely devoted to HCC is needed in clinical practice, as well as in clinical trials of HCC treatment, such as systemic therapies, which cause necrosis of the tumor. Response Evaluation Criteria in Cancer of the Liver (RECICL) was revised in 2021 by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan based on the 2019 version of RECICL, which was commonly used in Japan. The major revised points of the RECICL 2021 is inclusion of RECIST version 1.1 and modified RECIST as response evaluation criteria in systemic therapy for HCC. We hope this new treatment response criteria, RECICL, proposed by the Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan will benefit the HCC treatment response evaluation in the setting of daily clinical practice and clinical trials as well, not only in Japan, but also internationally.Structure engineering strategies such as core-shell and hollow nanostructures are effective pathways to improve the utilization of noble metals for catalysis. However, nowadays materials design based on these strategies still largely rely on precious metal templates. Herein, the epitaxial growth of highly crystalline Pt3 Ni overlayer on earth-abundant nickel carbide is reported, forming Ni3 C@Pt3 Ni core-shell nanoparticles with a well-defined interface through a new lattice-match-directed synthetic strategy. Derived from such core-shell nanostructures, ultrathin highly crystalline Pt3 Ni nanocages have an advantageous configuration of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)-favored facets and inherently high active surface area for the ORR, bringing high mass activity and specific activity as much as 4.71 A mgPt -1 and 5.14 mA cm-2 , which are 26 and 20 times to that of commercial Pt/C, respectively. This novel epitaxial growth of platinum opens up new avenues to rationally design highly active and economical electrocatalysts.Processed pseudogenes, also known as retrocopy genes, are copies of messenger RNAs that have been reverse transcribed into DNA and inserted into the genome. In this study, we identified 62 processed pseudogene candidates as intron-less genes from whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data of Thoroughbred horses using delly structural variation software. The 62 processed pseudogene candidates were confirmed by PCR amplification of intron-less products. A total of 11 processed pseudogenes were confirmed in the genome of all 23 analysed horses, whereas three processed pseudogenes with structures of ATP11B, DPH3 and RPL17 were detected in only one of 115 horses by PCR amplification of intron-less products. Currently, most of the gene doping tests proposed in human and horse sports are adapted PCR-based methods using hydrolysis probes to detect exon/exon junctions in transgenes because the operation is simple and economical. However, when the pseudogene is present in the host genome, the PCR-based methods may have a potential risk of detecting false positives. In this study, because processed pseudogenes that exist less frequently in the horse genome may affect PCR-based transgene detection in gene-doping tests, we propose and demonstrate that PCR amplification and sequencing using primers designed on transgene and promotors and/or polyadenylation signal for gene expression are useful for gene-doping detection as an additional confirmatory test to prevent false positives.
Inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidases from rat intestinal acetone powder (RIAP) has been widely used in research focused on regulating glucogenesis to be applied as a strategy to control obesity and type II diabetes. However, the crude extract has different compositions of α-glucosidases than a complete RIAP suspension due to enzymes anchored on the intestinal tissues after the extraction. Here, the inhibitory effects of different pharmaceutical and food-grade inhibitors on the enzymes in the RIAP suspension were investigated.
Instead of crude extracts from RIAP, the RIAP suspension without the extraction process was applied to optimize the α-glucosidase inhibitory model by pharmaceutical/natural inhibitors. The results clearly showed that the half-maximal inhibitory concentration ratios of four individual α-glucosidases by various inhibitors were different between the RIAP suspension and the crude extract. In particular, isomaltase from the RIAP suspension required more inhibitors than the crude extracproach can be applied to the development of natural/synthetic α-glucosidase inhibitors to attenuate the postprandial glycemic response more accurately. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
Patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) brain metastases are frequently treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). However, data reporting on the risk of developing radiation necrosis (RN) are limited.
RN rates were compared for concurrent therapy (ICI/SRS administration within 4 weeks of one another) and nonconcurrent therapy with the χ
test. Univariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with developing RN.
Fifty patients (23 concurrent and 27 nonconcurrent) with 395 brain metastases were analyzed. The median follow-up was 12.1 months; the median age was 65 years. The median margin dose was 20 Gy, and 4% underwent prior whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT). The median treated tumor volume was 3.32 cm
(range, 0.06-42.38 cm
); the median volume of normal brain tissue receiving a dose of 12 Gy or higher (V12 Gy) was 8.42 cm
(range, 0.27-111.22 cm
). Any-grade RN occurred in 17.4% and 22.2% in the concurrent and nonconcurrent gs risk. Attempts to improve dose conformality (reduce V12) may be the most successful mitigation strategy in single-fraction SRS.
Canola meal has limited utilization in feed and food applications because of the presence of antinutritional factors and a high fiber content. Thus, the present study used 3-day canola seed sprouting followed by hull removal to improve the nutritional quality of canola as a feed and food ingredient to further enhance and diversify the canola market.
Seed sprouting and the hull removal process resulted in 63.2% sprouts, 29.3% mix fractions (MF) (hulls, ungerminated seed, and delayed sprouts) and 8.1% mass loss during sprouting. Fresh sprouts and MF were dried, ground and defatted to compare the obtained meals and oils with their counterparts of raw seed. Defatted sprouts (DFSP) resulted in a 46.2% reduction in crude fiber, a 34.3% reduction in acid detergent fiber and a 43.4% reduction in neutral detergent fiber compared to defatted raw seed (DFSE). DFSP provided a 10.1% higher protein content and a 5.9% increase in total amino acid content with higher essential amino acids compared to DFSE. Total carbohydrate was lowered by 5.5%, phytic acid content was lowered by 25.9%, and ash content was lowered by 5.5% in DFSP, whereas total glucosinolate content was higher in DFSP (13.1 μmol g
) than in DFSE (8.8 μmol g
). Sprouts and MF showed an oil content of 38.4% and 9.6%, respectively, compared to raw seed (34.5%).
