Increased fluid intake on testing day was correlated with better visual memory and better verbal memory performance.
Behavioral changes such as increasing hydration, eating more fruit and fish, and eating less fast food may improve cognitive performance ss fast food may improve cognitive performance in college students.Purpose This descriptive qualitative study explored young males' perceptions of food skills in 3 domains food selection and planning, food preparation, and food safety and storage.Methods Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method.Results Forty-four young men (aged 17-35) reported varying levels of food skills, from little/no confidence to very confident and skilled. Most participants learned food skills from their mothers. Greater involvement in food selection and planning at a young age appeared to be related to parental influence and encouragement, exposure to food skills at school, and interest in food-related activities, which, in turn, provided a solid foundation for being confident cooks as young adults. Most notable was the lack of knowledge about, or confidence in, food safety and storage. Young men with low self-perceived food skills were deeply embarrassed about this deficiency in front of peers who had higher levels of confidence and skills.Conclusions Future interventions or curricula should emphasize food safety and storage. This research also illustrates the importance of the home environment in teaching food skills to youth and ensuring that food skills are taught well before young adults begin living independently.Encephalitis lethargica first appeared during World War 1, but reported cases gradually faded over the 1920s, and in the years following, cases were only sporadically reported. The clinical presentation was heterogeneous and typically included both acute and chronic phases. The acute phase was characterized by excessive sleepiness, disorders of ocular motility, fever, and movement disorders. On the other hand, the chronic phase was characterized by Parkinsonism, oculomotor abnormalities, involuntary movements, speech and respiratory abnormalities, and psychiatric manifestations. In Peru, Espejo-Tamayo reported 47 cases of the disease between 1919 and 1924, with an average mortality of 13%. We summarize six cases of encephalitis lethargica reported in Peru from 1920 through 1940.Following the announcement of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Wuhan on 31 December 2019, government officials in Hong Kong recommended the wearing of face masks as a public infection control measure against the COVID-19 virus and curtail the impact of the concurrent influenza season. The present study evaluated the influenza-related outcomes between the influenza season 2019 and 2020 in Hong Kong as a result of these infection control measures. A Monte Carlo simulation model was designed to estimate the number of influenza cases, clinic visits, hospitalization, deaths, direct medical cost and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for the season 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 in six age groups 0-5 years, 6-11 years, 12-17 years, 18-49 years, 50-64 years and ≥65 years in Hong Kong. Model inputs were derived from public data and existing literature. The model findings showed significant reduction in influenza-related cases, clinic visits, hospitalization, and deaths in 2020 versus 2019 (p less then 0.05). Influenza-related direct costs in all age-groups were significantly reduced by 56%-82% (p less then 0.01) in 2020 versus 2019. DALYs were also significantly decreased by 58%-85% (p less then 0.01). The direct cost and DALYs avoided in 2020 was the highest among the age group of 0-5 years with a cost-saving of USD593,763 (95%CI 590,730-596,796) per 10,000 population and a DALY reduction of 57.67 (95%CI 57.54-57.83) per 10,000 population. This study illustrated the reduction of all influenza-related outcome measures in Hong Kong as a result of the implementation of public infection control measures against COVID-19.

) in direct irradiation or upon receipt of irradiated-cell conditioned media (for bystander effects). In direct irradiation, feeding regimen experiments included compound administration pre- and post-irradiation, which was used as a basis to define effects as radioprotective and radiomitigative, respectively. In the bystander effect experiments, either donor or recipient cell cultures were fed with the phytochemicals and bystander-induced clonogenic cell death was quantitatively evaluated. Dose challenge was in the range of 0.5 - 5 Gy using the gamma source (Cs-137).

The post-irradiation radiosensitizing effect of d-limonene was an intriguing observation worth further investigation.The purpose of this study was to determine if staff perceive a mealtime management video to be a beneficial and useful training tool in long-term care (LTC) homes. An email invitation was sent to the Dietitians of Canada Gerontology Network inviting dietitians working in LTC homes to participate. A previously used and reliable 25-item questionnaire was used to assess sustained attention/mental effort, learner satisfaction, clinical experience/relevance, and information processing of the video. Dietitians were asked to show the video to LTC staff and distribute the questionnaire to staff after viewing the video. A total of 769 surveys were completed at 28 LTC homes across Canada. Eighty-seven percent (n = 637/736) of participants felt more knowledgeable after viewing the video and 91% (n = 669/738) found the video format easy for learning. Managers had a higher Likert scores (mean = 6.2 out of 7) than continuing care assistant (mean = 5.7, P = 0.02) and food service workers (mean = 5.5, P = 0.001) for the clinical relevance scales. No differences were found for age (χ2 = 5.52, P = 0.60), gender (χ2 = 2.65, P = 0.10), and size of home (χ2 = 3.34, P = 0.34). Staff perceived the video to be useful for their work with residents living in LTC homes and it raised awareness of the importance of their roles at mealtimes.Asarum sieboldii, a well-known traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is used for curing inflammation and ache. It contains both the bioactive ingredient asarinin and the toxic compound aristolochic acid. To address further breeding demand, genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways of asarinin and aristolochic acid should be explored. Therefore, the full-length transcriptome of A. sieboldii was sequenced using PacBio Iso-Seq to determine the candidate transcripts that encode the biosynthetic enzymes of asarinin and aristolochic acid. In this study, 63 023 full-length transcripts were generated with an average length of 1371 bp from roots, stems, and leaves, of which 49 593 transcripts (78.69%) were annotated against public databases. Furthermore, 555 alternative splicing (AS) events, 10 869 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) as well as their 11 291 target genes, and 17 909 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified. The data also revealed 97 candidate transcripts related to asarinin metabolism, of which six novel genes that encoded enzymes involved in asarinin biosynthesis were initially reported. In addition, 56 transcripts related to aristolochic acid biosynthesis were also identified, including CYP81B. In summary, these transcriptome data provide a useful resource to study gene function and genetic engineering in A. sieboldii.In 1833, Edward Stanley described the autopsy findings in seven men with paraplegia but no visible spinal cord abnormality. All had upper urinary tract infections. Stanley suggested that a nerve-transmitted input from the kidneys could suppress function in the spinal cord, causing paralysis. Others-principally Leroy d'Etiolles (1856) and Brown-Séquard (1859-1862)-expanded the concept to account for otherwise unexplained limb weakness (urinary or reflex paraplegia), and widened the range of culprit anatomical sites. Such interpretations continued until into the late-nineteenth century. In 1861, William Gull, long interested in paraplegia, attacked the concept, arguing that it depended on failure to examine affected spinal cords microscopically. He hinted that catheterization might have played a part in the phenomenon. With increasing knowledge of spinal cord histopathology and awareness of the basis of suppuration and the need for sterile techniques, mention of urinary paraplegia disappeared gradually over the course of the nineteenth century and the disease as an entity ceased to exist by 1900.Nutrition is important for prostate cancer (PCa) care as it may influence PCa progression and risk of comorbid diseases. The aim of this pilot study was to assess changes in knowledge and satisfaction in men with PCa following attendance at a nutrition education seminar. Fifty-two men with PCa attended nutrition education seminars instructed by a Registered Dietitian. Participants completed the Revised General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ-R) preseminar and 2 weeks postseminar, along with a satisfaction survey. Increased nutrition knowledge was observed through a significant (P = 0.023) improvement in mean scores of 71.6% (P  less then  0.005) preseminar compared with 79.3% (P  less then  0.005) postseminar on the GNKQ-R. Participants reported the seminar as a satisfactory method for meeting their diet information needs. Using thematic analysis 3 themes emerged importance of diet information, desire for an integrative approach, and the value of group learning. This pilot study found that a group nutrition education seminar may be an effective and satisfactory approach to fulfilling the dietary information needs of this population.
