What’s next for the Apple Watch

This article was written before Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 2.
Tomorrow, Apple will be holding an event to launch new stuff. Apart from the new iPhone, I’m curious to see where Apple is going to take the Apple Watch next. I’ve been interested in getting one since last year’s launch but I decided to hold the spending until the second or third generation. A lot of the initial misses should have been fixed by then.
One part of the fixes has already been presented last June at WWDC. Apple showcased the watchOS 3 with some fundamental changes on the interaction model of the watch. There’s now a proper use for the side button to trigger a dock of launched and updated apps and the bottom-up swipe now shows the control center, as in iOS.
Early adopters of the watch found themselves swipping and tapping too much to get the information they needed. Mostly because they kept staring at a loading screen. The watch is only worth it if it provides information at a glance, requires very little interaction, and takes very little time. After all, interactions with the watch should be measured in seconds.
I would expect the next versions of the Apple Watch to become more and more independent from the phone. One of the strongest cases I see for this are workouts. Being able to only carry the watch and some wireless headphones is ideal. People who run with more cables around them than the back of my desk are certainly going to appreciate it.
For this to happen, Apple will need to improve the watch as a workout tracking device and include communication independence. The rumours suggest that Apple will include a GPS for location tracking, a barometer for elevation and altitude measurement and improved waterproofing for really sweaty individuals, but cellular connectivity won’t be included in this version yet.
The case is not lost, though. You can still load your watch with the music you want and if you use any kind of workout app that syncs to the cloud, you can still sync it afterwards, with an iPhone nearby or a wi-fi connection. Just don’t expect any kind of phone calls, messages or other kind of notifications during your workout. Actually, that might be a good thing!
The watch will likely retain the existing form and finishes. We can expect a lower entry price point and new trendy, colourful watch bands. The stainless steel case with the white sport band is still a favourite of mine. Let’s see what’s the final price of that.
I’ll be tuning in to the live stream tomorrow. I’ll use my wireless headphones, unless they are out of battery…
