Why you might like a Pro iPhone (even if I don’t)

There was a time was there was the iPhone. I’m thinking especially about the iPhone 4, 4s, 5 days. You would see celebrities and tech geniuses with the same model you had, and the choice was really only “black” or “white.”
Things began to change with the colorful 5c and the golden 5s, and then really changed with the 6 and 6 Plus. When the 6 Plus was released, there was a clear advantage to having the Plus — a larger screen, better battery life, and better camera option.
But even then, there was not much of a compromise to get the standard model, and many going forward still opted for the 6, 6s, 7, etc.
Fast forward to 2017, and the iPhone X is released, alongside the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. It’s no surprise that the X was what would eventually become a “Pro” — OLED display, stainless steel sides, etc. The following Xs, and even more with the 11 pro and forward, Apple worked to distance the standard model (Xr, 11, 12/ 12 mini, etc) with the Pro line (Xs/ Xs Max, 11 Pro/ Pro Max, 12 Pro/ Pro Max, etc).
But even when looking at the features of the pro line, what exactly makes it significantly better? Why did I make that statement I would never get a Pro? Why do I feel you should if you want to?
The Camera
It’s no secret the 3 cameras on the back of the iPhone 11–14 Pro are magnificent, consistently some of the best in the business, and keep getting bigger and better each year. The Pros include a zoom lens that sets it apart from the standard models. If you are significantly into photography, this is a great benefit to have. For serious photographers, this could be an essential tool.
(That’s not me. I’m not the one who takes the pictures in my house, my wife is. So no need there.)
The Display
Since the iPhone X, the screen (in this case, an OLED “all-screen” display with a notch) has separated the standard from the Pro models, for the most part. (There as that moment when the 12 series had all teh same screen tech, just different sizes.)
For the Pro models, with 120 hz and an island, the level technology is advanced enough for the most discerning content viewer, gamer or videographer. If this refers to you, then this is a must, and you should go for it.
(Again, this is a no for me, as I don't like the notch, prefer the symmetry of the classic models, don’t care about bezel size, and honestly my vision isn't good enough to tell the difference between OLED and LCD).
Speaking of the Notch…
You do realize it’s getting worse, right? on the X — 12, the notch was wider, but stopped at a good vertical length that did not impact things you were watching on the screen. It really disappeared in dark mode, especially with the right background. The 13 brought a lower notch that cuts into video. The 14 Pro now has the island, which feels like it’s right in the middle of what you’re watching. So no, not better.
Beautiful Design
So you may be thinking to yourself, what about the gorgeous design? The steel frame, the flat edges, the frosted back?
They’re beautiful. I mean, just look at the picture above. But to be honest, with the exception of the iPhone 5c, all iPhones from the 4 onward were designed beautifully.
And the bad parts of the design outweigh the benefits in my perspective. The phones are heavy. The edges are sharp, and the stainless steel get’s smudge very quickly. And the camera bumps are obnoxious. That’s just me. If you like the beautiful design, the jewelry look that a gold pro deigns on it’s user, you should go for it.
Size
This one is becoming less and less relevant, but the Pro size does come in a 6.1 and a larger Max size variant. That means you get a huge, beautiful screen. If that’s what you’re looking for, you should get it.
(For me, nope.)
So, where does that leave us? I really think, from the iPhone SE to the mini 13, to the 12/13/14 size with a 6.1 inch screen, to the Plus & Max sizes, there really is an iPhone for everyone. If you’re like me, get the SE or the mini. If you like the best of the best, you can’t do better than a 14 Pro Max.
