When it comes to underrated German performance cars, we often think of BMW’s M2 as the underdog. It’s the brand’s smallest M car and therefore doesn’t get the same eye-catching attention, nor staggering performance figures as its M3 and M4 siblings. Higher up than these two in the lineup, there is the all-singing, all-dancing, legendary M5 set to beat out not only its German competitors from AMG and Audi’s RS division but also give less practical and sometimes more expensive sports cars a good run for their money.
Higher still, there’s the Competition variant of the M5 which promises yet more outstanding performance figures. It comes with an extra 25 horses, higher revs to play with, a 0.1 second quicker 0 to 60 mph time, and… exactly the same 190 mph top speed when optioned with the M package. And then, higher still in the M5 family, we finally get to the M5 CS with, again, a bit more power, a quicker 0 to 60 mph time of just 3 seconds compared to the Competition’s 3.3, it’s also more than 100 kilos lighter and even better to look at. The thing is though, why is there a need for an even more hardcore version of the sports saloon when that’s exactly what will bring the following generation M5? Does it not sound like BMW is charging extra money just selling slightly better versions of the living legend that is the M5?
In short, the answer is no. Let me explain.
